On the coast of Water 7, after the Straw Hat Crew relaxed for a while, Zoro asked, "Sandy, you said our money was taken by Franky to buy shipbuilding materials. Did you make a deal with him?"
Seeing Usopp and the others staring at him, Sandy shook his head.
"No. I haven't even met him."
Zoro's eyes widened. "You haven't even met him? Will the ship they build still belong to us?"
Sanji snapped, "You bastard, go get our money back right now! And we haven't even paid them back for beating up Usopp!"
Chopper echoed angrily, "Yeah! You bastard, Sandy!"
Sandy pressed his hands down, signaling for everyone to calm.
"That's what I was trying to explain. This is why I stopped you all earlier."
Sanji crossed his arms, face dark. "Then you better give a damn good explanation."
Sandy rolled his eyes. "Will you listen to me? If we go beat them up right now, can we still get the money back later? Of course, we could rob them—we're pirates after all.
But the reason we're not going now is simple: after they finish building the ship, we'll have every reason to sail away with it. At most, we'll just pay some repair fees. Right?"
Then Sandy turned to Usopp.
"Usopp, if you think beating them is more important than the ship, I'll go cut down the Franky Family right now."
"Oh!" Luffy grinned instantly. "Let's go cut down the Franky Family!"
Everyone's face darkened.
Usopp quickly said, "No, no! The ship is more important. A little injury is nothing. Calm down, Luffy."
"Oh!" Luffy grinned again. "Then we won't cut down the Franky Family."
Another collective dark expression.
Nami frowned and asked Sandy, "Is that what you meant by 'listen carefully to the Captain'?"
Sandy coughed. "Who is he? I don't know him."
"Nani?!!" Luffy and Chopper yelled together.
Chopper panicked, "Sandy! That's Luffy! You didn't get amnesia, did you?"
Usopp, Zoro, and Sanji stared at the three of them like they were idiots.
"Everyone." Sandy suddenly became serious. "There's one more very important thing."
"The most important thing?"
"Hurry and tell us! You've been acting weird since we arrived!"
"We only have the ship problem—what else could there be?"
Sandy said, "It's about Robin."
Luffy gasped. "Right! When I came back, I didn't see her. Do you know where she is?"
Sanji said anxiously, "Chopper and I searched the whole city. We couldn't find her."
Sandy replied, "She's being threatened by a dark organization within the World Government."
"NANI?!!"
Luffy yelled, "Sandy! Why didn't you say that earlier?! Everyone, let's go save Robin!"
Sanji shouted, "That's right! Robin is the priority! But where do we find her?"
Sandy waved them down again.
"Calm down. They're using Robin's weakness to control her. Even if we find her right now, we won't be able to convince her. She's obeying them willingly."
Luffy blinked. "Sandy… I don't get it."
Sandy smiled faintly.
"To save Robin, we need to start with her past."
Zoro asked, "Sandy, you know Robin's past?"
Sandy nodded, "Yes. Over twenty years ago, there was a country called Ohara."
Nami gasped. "I know that place! It's gone now. Is Robin from there?"
"Yes. Ohara was a holy land of archaeology in the West Blue. It had the world's greatest scholars and the largest library—the Tree of Omniscience.
One day, the scholars discovered a hundred-year blank period in history from eight hundred years ago. They began studying it.
But the World Government forbid anyone from researching that lost history. When they found out Ohara's scholars were studying it, they ordered them to stop."
Sanji asked, "So they ignored the warning and kept researching?"
"Exactly," Sandy said. "So the World Government ordered a Buster Call and annihilated the entire country."
"What?!"
"So that's why Robin was wanted since she was eight…"
"Why didn't they just stop researching?"
Sandy snorted, "What do you know? Scholars are the ones who push history forward. Their pursuit of truth is their belief.
If scholars give in to fear, then history becomes just a fantasy controlled by those in power. That's not history.
Human progress exists because of scholars who record the truth, no matter the cost."
The coast fell silent.
After a long moment, Sandy continued, "Robin is the only survivor of Ohara. As a child, she lived through the horror of a Buster Call. Now she's being threatened again. If they use us as hostages, of course she'll surrender willingly."
Luffy adjusted his hat.
"Everyone, we're not abandoning Robin… right?"
"OOOH!"
"Alright then," Luffy declared. "Let's go rescue Robin!"
Sandy rolled his eyes.
"Not yet. To free Robin from her inner demons, she needs to go with them first—and face her past directly. Only then can she really break free. That's my suggestion. What do you say, Luffy?"
Luffy nodded. "We'll do what you say."
Nami muttered, "No wonder that Marine Admiral said he had some connection with Robin…"
Sandy scoffed, "Aokiji was also part of the Buster Call back then. I don't know how he can act all superior now. After her home was destroyed, Robin had to survive while being hunted at eight years old…"
Sanji burst into tears.
"Miss Robin… from now on, let me protect you…"
Sandy facepalmed, "Can you stop being so shameless? Acting like a romance saint. Aren't we all starving?"
"Ah!" Luffy shouted. "Right! I haven't eaten in three meals! Sanji, cook! Hurry!"
"Stupid cook! Bring me sake!"
"I want meat! Lots of meat!"
"Sanji, I want noodles!"
The chaos returned instantly.
