Chapter 47 - Chapter 47 Engagement and the truth

Keifer's POV — Unexpected Guest

The study chaos had finally settled. I was leaning against the wall, keeping an eye on everyone, while Jay passed snacks around, and Section E tried to convince themselves they were ready for exams. The calm was temporary, though—I could feel it coming.

The doorbell rang, sharp and deliberate. My stomach sank.

Keigan glanced at me. "Who could that be?"

Before anyone could answer, the door opened—and there stood Angelo, his usual confident grin in place… and a woman behind him. I froze.

Angelo stepped inside, announcing cheerfully, "Everyone, meet Ion."

I immediately stiffened. Ion. The name alone made my heart skip. Everyone in our circle knew who she was—my ex-fiancée. Everyone, that is, except Jay.

The way she smiled, polite and composed, made my chest tighten. She didn't say anything, didn't glance at me. But I could feel it—the weight of her presence, the memories lurking just beneath the surface.

Angelo, completely oblivious to my inner panic, clapped his hands together. "We just came by to tell you all some exciting news. Ion and I are going to get engaged—after Section E finishes their exams, of course."

The room erupted in cheers and congratulations, Section E oblivious to my mounting tension. Jay smiled happily at Angelo's announcement, excited for the couple. I forced a smile, but inside… my mind was racing.

What if Ion decided to say something? What if Jay found out about her? About us?

Ion remained perfectly still, graceful, unreadable. Not a word. Not a glance. She didn't give anyone reason to panic. But for me, every second she stayed in that room was a battle between calm and sheer panic.

I tried to focus on Angelo's words, the laughter, the cheer of Section E—but my heart wouldn't calm. My hands itched to move, to speak, to clarify everything… but I knew better.

She didn't speak. And yet, the silence carried more weight than words ever could.

Angelo turned back to me, oblivious to my internal turmoil. "Keifer! Don't worry. You're happy, right?"

I swallowed hard, nodded, and forced myself to smile. "Of course," I said.

Jay, blissfully unaware, hugged Ion lightly. Section E cheered. The happiness in the room was contagious.

But inside, I couldn't shake it. Ion's calm, quiet presence had thrown me off balance. I knew one thing for sure: I had to protect what I had now—Jay, Section E, everything we had built—before the past came creeping back.

And yet, I couldn't take my eyes off Ion, even for a second.

The danger wasn't from her words—it was from the possibility of the truth spilling out.

Everyone Leaving

The announcement had barely sunk in before Angelo motioned toward the door. "Alright, everyone, Ion and I are heading out."

Ion gave a small, polite nod to the group, still silent, still unreadable. I felt my chest tighten the moment she moved, that quiet composure making my stomach twist. But before I could dwell on it, the car doors shut, and they drove off, leaving a strange emptiness in the room.

Section E, still buzzing from the day's chaos, began gathering their things, laughing and joking as they split up to go to their respective homes. I watched them leave, the noise slowly fading, leaving the house feeling unusually quiet.

Eces, Keigan, and Keiren retreated to their rooms, the house finally calming into the soft, familiar rhythm of our space. Jay glanced at me, a small smile on her lips, before she, too, disappeared toward her room.

I remained for a moment in the hallway, feeling the quiet press in around me. My mind kept drifting back to Ion—her presence had stirred something inside me I wasn't ready to face yet. But now, at least, the distraction of guests and Section E was gone.

With a deep breath, I finally made my way to my room, closing the door behind me. The house was calm, but my thoughts were far from it. Tonight, the silence was mine—but Ion's quiet shadow lingered, reminding me that the past could always find a way back.

The Truth in Our Room

We were already in our room.

The door was closed, the lights low, the noise of the house far away. Jay was sitting on the bed, removing her earrings slowly, unaware that my chest felt like it was about to cave in. I stood there for a few seconds too long, staring at her back, knowing that if I didn't speak now—I might lose the courage forever.

"Jay…" my voice came out rough.

She turned immediately. "What's wrong?"

I sat beside her, hands clasped tightly together. My heart was racing so fast it scared me. "I need to tell you something. About Ion. About me."

Her smile faded. She listened. Always did.

"That engagement," I said quietly. "It wasn't my choice. It was forced—by the elders… and Keigan too. I didn't want it. I never did. But I didn't have a way out back then."

Her eyes widened, filling with tears almost instantly.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked, voice trembling. "Why did I have to hear this now?"

I looked down, ashamed. "Because I was scared," I admitted. "Scared that if you knew, you'd leave. I wanted the right time. I kept telling myself I'd tell you when things were settled." I swallowed hard. "But when I saw Ion today… I panicked. I couldn't keep it inside anymore."

Her tears fell, one after another, and each one felt like it landed straight on my heart.

She cried silently at first, shoulders shaking. I moved closer immediately, pulling her into my arms, holding her like she might disappear if I let go.

"I'm sorry," I whispered into her hair. "I swear, Jay… I never chose anyone but you."

Her hands clutched my shirt as she cried. Then, softly—so softly it almost broke me—she whispered,

"I forgive you."

I pulled back just enough to look at her. "Jay—"

"I forgive you," she repeated. "Because you told me. Because you didn't let someone else say it first." Her voice cracked. "If I had heard this from anyone else… I don't think I could've forgiven you."

My chest tightened painfully. "Thank you," I breathed. "Thank you for trusting me."

Before I could overthink it, before fear could creep back in, I cupped her face and kissed her.

It wasn't soft.

It wasn't playful.

It was raw, full of apology, relief, love—everything I hadn't said out loud. She kissed me back just as fiercely, her hands gripping my shoulders, grounding me.

When we finally pulled back, our foreheads rested together, breaths uneven.

"I'm yours," I said quietly. "Only yours. Always."

She nodded, eyes still wet, but steady. Safe.

And for the first time since Ion walked through that door—

I felt like I could breathe again.

Our forehead touched.

Her breath, a soft current, warmed my lips. The scent of her—jasmine and something uniquely Jay—filled my senses, grounding me.

"It means nothing," I murmured, my voice a low rumble, against her lips. "Not now. Not since you."

Her eyes, still wide, flickered. A moment of hesitation, a breath held. Then, a subtle shift in her posture, a softening. I closed the distance, my mouth finding hers. It was a tentative beginning, a question posed in the press of our lips. Her response, a sigh that melted into the kiss, answered everything. Her fingers, cool and slender, found the back of my neck, pulling me closer, deepening the connection. The kiss tasted of regret and desire, a desperate plea for forgiveness, a fierce promise for the future.

My hands found her waist, drawing her against me. The silk of her robe, a whisper against my palms, offered little resistance. Her body molded to mine, a familiar curve, a perfect fit. The tension that had held her captive, that had held *us* captive, began to unravel. Her lips parted, inviting me in, and the world outside the room, the city lights, the lingering ghost of Ion, all faded into insignificance. Only Jay remained, her warmth, her taste, her presence, a blazing star in my universe.

We moved as one, a silent conversation unfolding in the press of skin, the tangle of limbs, the shared breath. The night held a quiet understanding, a rebuilding of bridges, one touch, one kiss, one shared heartbeat at a time.
