Chapter 489 - Chapter 489

Chelsea had won the Europa League the previous season, but they no longer looked capable of challenging for the Premier League title.

Since Mourinho's departure years earlier, the club had changed managers repeatedly and struggled to build anything lasting.

Now Mourinho stood in the opposite technical area, leading Manchester United through one of the most successful periods in their history.

Some Chelsea supporters could not help wondering how differently events might have unfolded had the relationship between club and manager not collapsed.

Then their attention shifted toward Mason Mount.

Mount had entered Chelsea's academy at six years old and had been promoted by Lampard after successful loan spells.

Half a season in the Premier League had already revealed his potential.

He could press, carry the ball, arrive late in the penalty area, defend from the front, and create chances for others.

Lampard had publicly described him as Chelsea's answer to Ling—a young academy product capable of becoming the symbol of the club's next generation.

The comparison was unfair.

Ling was already the best player in the world.

Mount was still trying to establish himself in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, the supporters wanted someone around whom they could build their hope.

Mount noticed their encouragement and glanced toward United's number 7.

The famous shirt stood out under the floodlights, its history magnified by the player wearing it.

Rather than feel intimidated, Mount raised his hand and demanded possession.

Jorginho found him between the lines.

Chelsea's midfield had gradually shifted more responsibility toward Mount and Kovačić, allowing them to carry the ball and create from advanced areas while Jorginho controlled the rhythm behind them.

"Mount is not simply a runner," Beglin observed. "His timing is excellent. He knows when to move away from the ball and when to appear inside the half-space."

Mount exchanged a quick one-two with Willian before sending a diagonal pass toward Batshuayi.

The Belgian striker received with Maguire behind him and used his strength to turn.

He prepared to shoot.

Thiago Silva read the danger and stepped across, blocking the effort before it could reach De Gea.

The ball rebounded toward midfield.

Havertz rose to meet it and headed down toward Matić, who immediately shifted possession to Sandro on the left.

United accelerated.

A succession of fast, precise passes carried them through Chelsea's retreating midfield before the ball reached Ling.

Rüdiger stepped out to confront him.

Ling feinted inward, then pushed the ball toward the outside.

The defender refused to commit. His balance remained low, and he tracked the movement cleanly.

But beating Rüdiger with the initial feint had never been Ling's intention.

He had merely wanted room to accelerate.

Tap!

Ling knocked the ball forward and exploded into a sprint.

Rüdiger possessed exceptional athleticism, even among elite center-backs.

He turned almost simultaneously and stayed beside Ling as they approached the penalty area.

"Ling begins to open his stride, but Rüdiger is matching him!"

Ling created half a yard and struck toward goal.

Rüdiger launched himself across the turf.

The tip of his boot reached the ball and deflected it behind for a corner.

"SUPERB DEFENDING!" Drury exclaimed. "Rüdiger refused the feint, survived the acceleration, and still found the final intervention!"

Ling extended a hand and pulled the defender back to his feet.

His expression carried a trace of amusement.

Throughout the winter transfer window, Rüdiger had repeatedly sent him messages that were only slightly more subtle than an official transfer request.

'Need another center-back?'

'I'm available, you know.'

'Tell Mourinho I'd look good in red.'

Rüdiger had practically been advertising himself.

Ling had eventually mentioned the subject to Mourinho, and United had made an enquiry.

Chelsea's response had been absolute.

They would not strengthen a direct rival under any circumstances, even if keeping an unhappy player created problems of its own.

United had therefore turned to Nathan Aké.

Once that transfer was agreed, Rüdiger understood that his opportunity to join Ling at Manchester United had disappeared.

He still had no intention of remaining at Chelsea forever.

When the right offer arrived—or his contract approached its end—he wanted a club capable of competing consistently for the biggest trophies.

Until then, however, he would defend Chelsea's goal with everything he had.

...

The first half became increasingly competitive.

Chelsea carried more threat through Mount and Willian, while Manchester United repeatedly tried to exploit the spaces around Jorginho.

In the 43rd minute, Mount attempted to dribble down the flank.

McTominay moved laterally, waited for the exact moment when Mount pushed the ball too far ahead, and stepped in with a textbook tackle.

The two players had entered senior football at roughly the same age, but their paths had been entirely different.

Ling had become an automatic starter almost immediately.

McTominay had spent long stretches on the bench, watching matches and waiting for opportunities that often never arrived.

He had never allowed frustration to reduce his effort.

If anything, he trained harder.

His positioning improved, his body became stronger, and his relentless running gradually earned Mourinho's trust.

He was no longer merely an academy player filling a place in the squad.

He had become a reliable part of the rotation.

After winning possession, McTominay stopped sharply and allowed Mount to run past.

He then nudged the ball between the Chelsea midfielder's legs and passed sideways toward Kanté.

A roar of approval rose from the away section.

"McTominay wins it—and adds a nutmeg for good measure!"

Kanté carried the ball through midfield.

Chelsea's defensive shape had focused so heavily on United's forward players that nobody immediately tracked the Frenchman's run.

Before Jorginho could close him down, Kanté slipped a pass into Havertz between the lines.

United suddenly raised the tempo.

Havertz moved beyond Kovačić, but Christensen stepped out quickly from defense.

Rather than force his way through, Havertz used his heel to return the ball into Kanté's path.

Chelsea's structure opened.

The defenders had been drawn toward Havertz, while the midfielders were still recovering behind Kanté. A wide channel appeared directly through the center.

Kanté passed into it instinctively.

Ling and Rüdiger reached the ball together.

Red against blue.

Ling positioned his body between the defender and possession, cushioning the pass with his right foot.

As Rüdiger applied pressure from behind, Ling dragged the ball backward with his left and began to turn.

His movement resembled the opening of a Marseille turn, but he stopped halfway rather than completing the full rotation.

Rüdiger expected Ling to continue across his body.

Instead, the United forward used the momentum of the turn to create a shooting angle.

He pushed the ball firmly with his right foot.

It rolled low across goal toward the far corner.

Caballero dived at full stretch.

His fingertips reached nothing.

0–2!

Stamford Bridge fell silent.

Peter Drury's voice carried through the stunned stadium.

"LING TURNS—AND CHELSEA DISAPPEAR BEHIND HIM!"

"Rüdiger was close enough to feel every movement, yet one drag of the ball and half a rotation have opened the whole of Stamford Bridge before Manchester United's number 7!"

"The finish is quiet. The invention before it is magnificent."

Beglin watched the slow-motion replay.

"That requires tremendous core strength. Rüdiger is leaning into him throughout the movement, but Ling stays balanced, manipulates the ball with both feet, and stops the turn at precisely the right point."

"There's something of Bergkamp in the imagination—not the same move, but the same ability to invent an escape where the defender believes none exists."

Just before halftime, Manchester United had doubled their advantage.

Ling turned toward Kanté and raised his hand.

The midfielder met him with a firm high five.

Havertz arrived moments later, still staring at Ling in disbelief.

"That was incredible."

Ling smiled.

"You weren't bad either. You struck fifteen volleys during your unveiling and only missed eleven."

Havertz's expression immediately flattened.

"Why do you remember the exact number?"

"Because it was unforgettable."

"That was months ago."

"It will still be funny in ten years."

Havertz sighed.

No matter what he achieved in the future, he suspected his teammates would continue reminding him of that disastrous unveiling.

The referee soon ended the first half with United leading by two.

...

Manchester United became more controlled after the interval.

There was no need to chase a third goal recklessly with Real Madrid approaching.

Mourinho instructed the midfield to protect the center, reduce unnecessary transitions, and counter only when Chelsea committed enough players forward.

Lampard's response was strangely cautious.

Despite trailing by two, he kept several players close to Ling and refused to release both full-backs at once.

Chelsea increased their possession but never committed fully to the comeback.

The reason was obvious.

Lampard still remembered what had happened to Tottenham.

Opening the entire pitch against Ling could turn a respectable 0–2 defeat into a humiliation before the final whistle.

Chelsea pushed forward in controlled waves, but Thiago Silva and Maguire dealt comfortably with Batshuayi.

Kanté repeatedly closed Mount's passing lanes, while McTominay continued pressing whenever Chelsea tried to build through midfield.

At the opposite end, Ling's movement kept Rüdiger and Christensen occupied even when United did not have the ball.

Chelsea could never attack with complete freedom.

The final minutes passed without another goal.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Chelsea 0–2 Manchester United.

Drury concluded the broadcast over the celebrations of the away supporters.

"Manchester United leave Stamford Bridge with another victory, another clean sheet, and another demonstration of control."

"Ling missed from the spot but refused to miss the rebound. Then, before halftime, he turned strength, balance, and imagination into a goal worthy of the shirt upon his back."

"The champions continue their march—and now, beyond the horizon of the Premier League, Real Madrid wait."
