After dinner, Lin Chen retrieved three drones from his study.
These were the drones he had brought back with him.
"Keep an eye on these, wife," he said.
"Swarm Activation."
As soon as he spoke, the three drones whirred to life and hovered at a height of one meter.
"Altitude two meters," Lin Chen commanded. The drones ascended to the specified height.
"Search for humans."
The three drones quickly located Lin Chen and the other two. The drone facing Xu Mengyao was designated as Unit 2.
Lin Chen continued, "Designate Unit 2 as the owner. Collect visual and voice data from the owner."
The light on the drone facing Xu Mengyao turned green. A voice emanated from it: "Owner, please issue a command. We will execute your orders."
"Fly around me in a circle," Xu Mengyao tentatively suggested.
The drone immediately complied, circling her.
"Honey, how do these drones distinguish enemies? They won't attack innocent bystanders, will they?" Xu Mengyao asked.
Lin Chen replied, "By default, everyone is on the whitelist and will not be attacked. However, if someone nearby attacks you, or if you give a clear command, they will be marked as a target."
"Once marked, they can continuously track and eliminate the target."
With that, Lin Chen handed Xu Mengyao the smart glasses he was wearing.
"Keep a pair in your car and office. These will give you more precise control."
"If you don't have these with you or can't use them, just have the drones enter Defense Mode."
"As long as one drone is near you, all of them will obey your commands."
Xu Mengyao asked doubtfully, "What is Defense Mode?"
"Defense Mode is automatic. It's best to activate it when there are many enemies. In this mode, the drones won't stray far."
"If there are few enemies, you can switch them to Tracking Mode. They'll search the area for targets."
"In Tracking Mode, your defenses will be weaker, but their counterattack capabilities will be enhanced."
"In both modes, the drones will send me messages. I'll connect remotely and take control immediately."
Xu Mengyao nodded.
Knowing Lin Chen could control the drones remotely eased her mind.
Lin Chen said seriously, "Wife, there's one thing you must remember: if the enemy launches a fatal attack immediately, you won't have time to counter."
"So you still need to be careful. Don't let your guard down just because they're around."
Xu Mengyao nodded.
"Honey, the chances of that are slim. The Xu Group has attracted some powerful investors. As CEO, killing me would alienate them."
"Besides, I'm just a businesswoman. Capturing me could threaten you, but killing me would be pointless."
Lin Chen nodded.
Xu Mengyao was right. Killing her would only make him furious, with no other strategic advantage.
The Zhao and Wu families, for instance, hadn't been pushed to the brink. At most, they'd face ten or eight years in prison.
There was no need to resort to murder.
Take Wu Yangcheng, for example. Even with a ten-year sentence, he'd be in his early sixties upon release. With his wealth, he could still enjoy twenty more years of luxury.
Why would he risk his life and his entire family?
"Wife, keep an eye on the drones' battery levels. They'll warn you when they drop below 30%."
"Make sure to charge them promptly."
Lin Chen reminded her.
Xu Mengyao nodded. "I will. Honey, teach me how to use these smart glasses."
"Alright."
Lin Chen began teaching her in earnest.
Late that night, after Xu Mengyao and Lin Xiaoqian had fallen asleep, Lin Chen went to a nearby shop and loaded dozens of drones into his car.
He drove to a small hill to test them. The hill was popular with hikers during the day, with walking trails winding through it, but at night it was pitch-black, not even a ghost in sight.
Lin Chen took out dozens of drones.
"Swarm Activation," he commanded.
"Enter the forest and begin search operations."
"Buzz—"
Dozens of drones took off simultaneously, swiftly entering the forest. They possessed excellent obstacle avoidance capabilities and could share data in real-time.
"What is Mr. Lin doing?" someone asked from inside a van parked nearby.
"Don't worry about it. Just focus on your work."
Soon, the entire hill was thoroughly searched by the drones, their thermal imaging allowing them to cover the area quickly.
Lin Chen entered the hill.
"Retrieve!"
He recalled about thirty drones into his System Space.
Ten minutes later, he emerged from the hill.
Twenty or so drones followed him out.
Lin Chen had deliberately crashed some of the drones, making them crash into trees or dense undergrowth and explode.
With so many tests, he could silently add one or two hundred more drones to his System Space.
That should be more than enough.
How many people could possibly surround him on Chinese territory?
"Mr. Lin, would you like us to help retrieve them?" a National Security Agency member asked.
Lin Chen shook his head. "It's nothing secret. Why bother salvaging those wrecks? I'll have Mengyao Company reproduce them later."
"Understood." The agent left quickly.
Lin Chen also departed.
The recent tests had given him a better understanding of the drones' performance, and he still needed to refine the control system.
One night passed.
"Honey, I should be less busy in three days. Then we can head to Yili for our wedding photos," Xu Mengyao said in a sweet voice.
With the wedding only a month and a half away, they needed to hurry. Photo editing and post-processing would take time.
"I'm always ready," Lin Chen replied with a smile.
After Xu Mengyao left for work, Lin Chen began planning. He still needed to prepare many things, such as parachutes and outdoor survival gear like tents and food.
Xu Mengyao's private jet had plenty of parachutes, but he couldn't guarantee they were all in perfect condition. He decided to stock up on extra parachutes in the System Space, so he could quickly replace any if needed. He had already learned how to use a parachute.
"Hello, I'd like to rent your house—"
Lin Chen anonymously rented a bare, unfurnished apartment in their community for 2,000 yuan a month.
"Hello, I'd like to buy ten parachutes, the kind that can carry two people simultaneously. Please deliver them to Ziyuan Community, Building 7, Room 802."
"The door code is—"
After purchasing the parachutes, Lin Chen contacted a supermarket. He ordered a wide variety of supplies: water, food, clothing, and daily necessities. Even if stranded on a desert island or lost in the desert, these provisions would be enough to sustain them for a considerable time.
By afternoon, all the items Lin Chen had ordered had been delivered to the apartment.
In the evening, Lin Chen left the apartment carrying some items. He went to Building 7, where Qiqi, Lin Xiaoqian's best friend, lived. Of course, he wasn't going to Qiqi's place. The items he carried were just a cover.
"Receive!"
Lin Chen went to Room 802, collected all the supplies, and changed the door code.
