Chapter 167 - Chapter 28 — Fractures Beneath Fear, Part4

Part 4 — The Cost of Survival

Daigo looked across the room silently.

At frightened students.

At students pretending not to be frightened.

At children trying to understand words like mobilization, deployment, and war far earlier than they should have needed to.

Then finally, he spoke again.

"…For now, focus on what's directly in front of you."

"…Your training."

"…Your judgment."

"…And protecting the people beside you."

Ayame's eyes shifted slightly hearing that line.

Haruto slowly looked back up.

Kaito sat quietly.

The room remained heavy.

But steadier now.

Not because the fear disappeared.

But because everyone inside the classroom was carrying it together.

The classroom stayed quiet after Daigo's explanation about Era 8.

The words still lingered in the air.

Eight years ago.

Emergency graduation.

War pressure.

Students didn't fully relax anymore.

Then a hand slowly rose.

Daichi hesitated for a second, then spoke.

"…Sir."

Daigo looked up.

"…What is it?"

Daichi swallowed.

"…What's your opinion on Era 8's early graduation?"

That question immediately changed the atmosphere.

Even students who weren't listening properly looked up now.

It wasn't just history anymore.

It was judgment.

Daigo stayed silent for a moment.

Not because he didn't know the answer—

but because he chose his words carefully.

Then he turned slightly toward the board again.

"…Early graduation is not something that is ever considered 'good' or 'bad' in simple terms."

He faced the class fully.

"…It has advantages."

He raised one finger.

"…The village gains trained manpower faster during crisis periods."

"…Command structure becomes more flexible."

"…Response to threats becomes immediate."

A pause.

Then his tone lowered slightly.

"…But the disadvantages are heavier."

A second finger.

"…They lose time to mature properly within the academy system."

"…They enter real operations before emotional and psychological readiness is complete."

"…And most importantly…"

He paused briefly.

The room stayed silent.

"…Their lives stop following a normal generation path."

That line landed heavily.

Daigo continued.

"…Era 8 is a clear example of that balance."

"…They became operationally necessary during a war period."

"…But it came at the cost of normal development."

The room stayed quiet.

No one interrupted.

Then Daichi spoke again, softer this time.

"…So was it worth it?"

That question hung in the air.

Daigo didn't answer immediately.

His eyes shifted slightly toward the window.

For a moment, distant movement from the village could be seen again.

Then he spoke.

"…A village doesn't choose between perfect and imperfect outcomes."

"…It chooses between survival and collapse."

The classroom went completely silent.

Even the students who usually looked indifferent had stopped moving.

Daigo lowered his gaze slightly.

"…Era 8 survived that decision."

"…That alone is considered an advantage."

A pause.

Then quieter:

"…But the cost is something only those who lived through it can understand."

The room stayed still.

And for the first time—

Haruto didn't speak.

He just sat quietly.

Processing everything.

Slowly realizing that the world he lived in was shaped long before he ever understood it.
