Chapter 166 - Chapter 28 — Fractures Beneath Fear, Part3

Part 3 — Possibility of War

The rest of the lesson continued—

but barely anyone truly focused on it.

Daigo continued teaching calmly from the front of the room.

Chalk moved across the board.

Pages turned occasionally.

But the classroom no longer felt normal.

Students kept drifting back toward the same thoughts.

Mobilization.

War.

Early graduation.

Parents.

Deployment.

Outside the windows, distant shinobi movement still occasionally crossed the rooftops.

Not enough to interrupt class—

but enough to remind everyone that the village hadn't returned to normal.

Haruto stared at his notebook quietly.

The words written across the page had long stopped registering.

Daigo's earlier answer still echoed in his head.

"Their lives stop following a normal generation path."

His fingers tightened slightly around the edge of the paper.

If Era 8 had never graduated early—

would Akari and Renjiro still even be part of his life the same way?

Would everything around him be different?

The thoughts kept spiraling.

A chair scraped softly nearby.

Haruto flinched slightly before realizing what it was.

Ayame noticed immediately.

She didn't say anything.

But her eyes stayed on him for a moment longer than usual.

Kaito noticed too.

Though unlike Ayame—

he tried acting normal instead.

"…You're gonna destroy your notebook at this rate."

Haruto blinked once and loosened his grip slightly.

Kaito gave a small smile.

"…Then Aka's gonna yell at you for wasting paper."

A tiny attempt at humor.

Small.

Weak.

But genuine.

Haruto lowered his gaze quietly.

"…Yeah…"

It wasn't much.

But Kaito still counted it as success.

The lesson eventually continued into silence again.

Nobody interrupted anymore.

Even Daichi had stopped asking questions.

The atmosphere itself felt tired now.

Then finally—

the bell rang.

The sharp sound echoed through the classroom.

Usually, students would immediately start talking.

Moving around.

Complaining about lessons.

But today—

the room only slowly came back to life.

Students stood quietly.

Some remained seated for a few extra seconds.

Others immediately began speaking in low voices.

The fear from last night still lingered too heavily.

Kaito stretched slightly in his seat.

"…Finally."

Ayame calmly packed her things.

Haruto moved slower than both of them.

As students gradually began gathering for break, conversations quietly spread across the room.

The classroom stayed quiet during break.

Not the usual kind of quiet—

but the kind where everyone was trapped inside their own thoughts.

Lunch boxes slowly opened across the room.

Chairs shifted softly.

But very few actual conversations happened.

Most students simply sat near each other in silence.

Like being alone suddenly felt uncomfortable.

Outside the windows, distant shinobi movement still occasionally crossed the rooftops.

Every time shadows moved overhead—

someone's eyes instinctively lifted toward the glass.

Then lowered again.

Kaito opened his lunch first.

"…Aka packed too much again."

Ayame glanced over slightly.

"…You say that every time."

"…Because every time it's true."

Normally, that exchange would've made Haruto smile at least a little.

Today—

he barely reacted.

Kaito quietly pushed part of the food toward him.

"…Eat."

Haruto lowered his gaze.

"…I'm not hungry."

Kaito didn't pull the box back.

"…Didn't ask."

Ayame quietly added beside him—

"…You barely ate this morning either."

Haruto stayed silent for a moment.

Then slowly took a small bite.

Kaito nodded once like that solved everything.

Around them, other students had started eating too.

Some stared blankly at their food between bites.

Some kept glancing toward the windows.

Others looked down silently, lost somewhere deep in thought.

Even the students who usually acted fearless had become quieter today.

The atmosphere no longer felt like an academy break.

It felt like children waiting for something they didn't understand.

Izumi still tried offering small reassuring smiles to nearby classmates.

Yuna stayed close to her quietly.

Daichi looked tense even while sitting still.

Souta kept staring at the desk absentmindedly.

Misaki occasionally checked the classroom door without realizing it.

And Haruto—

Haruto could barely stop thinking.

About Renjiro.

About Era 8.

About war changing people's lives before they even understood it.

The thought kept repeating inside his head.

If Era 8 hadn't graduated early—

would everything around him be different now?

Would Akari and Renjiro still be part of his life the same way?

Would the people he cared about even still be here?

The realization felt too large for him to process properly.

Kaito spoke quietly after a while.

"…Renjiro still wasn't home this morning."

Haruto's expression lowered slightly again.

Ayame nodded once.

"…Aka lied."

Kaito looked down at his lunch.

"…Yeah."

Silence followed.

Then Haruto quietly said what all three already knew.

"…He got deployed."

Neither of the others denied it.

Because deep down—

they had already understood that since morning.

Kaito forced a small smile again.

"…He's strong though."

"…So he'll come back."

Ayame lowered her gaze slightly.

"…Probably."

But even she sounded uncertain saying it.

And that uncertainty settled heavily between them.

Around the classroom, students continued eating quietly.

No loud laughter.

No arguments.

No usual academy energy.

Just children trying to act normal while fear slowly settled deeper inside them.

Then eventually—

the bell rang again.

The sharp sound echoed across the room.

Several students flinched slightly before immediately calming themselves.

Lunch boxes slowly closed.

Students returned to their seats quietly.

And little by little—

the fragile feeling of safety faded from the classroom once again.
