It functioned like a sensor: pressing the single button on the right side instantly alerted the others. It had positioning capabilities and could even serve as an explosive device—in truly dangerous situations, press the button, remove it, and throw it far away to unleash tremendous power.
Sophie watched her son leave, then hurriedly carried the drowsy, nearly asleep Emily toward the nurses' station to ask for her room number.
As soon as they turned into the next corridor, she spotted a man in the distance frantically searching everywhere. A chill seemed to radiate from him; even his black trench coat appeared to carry strands of ice.
Sophie's scalp tingled. She quickly hugged the almost-sleeping Emily tighter and walked toward the figure.
"Ned, Ned—over here! Emily is here!" She hurried a few steps forward and called softly.
