The atmosphere at St. Jude's the next morning wasn't just quiet—it was suffocating. Usually, the hallways were a mess of loud laughter, but today, it felt like walking through a graveyard.
Hanalei noticed it the second she stepped out of her cab.
Chloe, who usually walked like she owned the sidewalk, was standing by the lockers, looking unusually pale. Her usual squad was silent. No gossip. No laughing.
"Did you hear?" a girl whispered as Hanalei walked past.
"Hayes is in the hospital. My dad said his jaw was broken in three places. Miller won't even leave his house."
"Who did it?"
"Nobody saw. They just found them in the alley behind the gym."
Hanalei slowed her pace. Hayes and Miller were the two seniors who had been staring at her in the hallway yesterday. The ones who had called her "the pretty taxi girl."
