Chapter 8: The Fight Against Magic Claw
Metropolis.
Another superhero had come looking for Transition.
Her name was Magic Claw.
She was a powerful cat-like superhero with a mostly human appearance, except for her cat ears and long tail.
But her appearance was the least dangerous thing about her.
Magic Claw possessed powerful mystical abilities.
She could fire magical energy, create barriers, teleport, manipulate objects, and perform strange magical transformations.
She had once even transformed a black hole into a butterfly.
On another occasion, she had transformed a dimensional portal into flowers.
Magic Claw believed that made her uniquely suited to fighting Transition.
She found Derek standing alone in an abandoned street.
Magic Claw: "Transition!"
Derek turned around.
Transition: "Another hero?"
Magic Claw raised her hand.
Magic Claw: "You're finished."
A massive magical barrier suddenly appeared around Derek.
It closed around him like a prison.
Magic Claw: "Nowhere to go."
Derek examined the barrier.
He smiled.
Transition: "Interesting."
Magic Claw tightened the barrier.
Magic Claw: "You're trapped."
Derek touched the magical wall.
Transition.
The entire barrier disappeared.
Magic Claw's eyes widened.
Magic Claw: "What?!"
Derek had transitioned the barrier away.
Magic Claw immediately destroyed the remaining magical energy herself and teleported to another position.
She didn't give Derek time to attack.
Her eyes glowed.
Magic Claw: "Then I'll control you."
A mystical force entered Derek's mind.
Magic Claw attempted to take control of his thoughts and force him to obey her.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then Derek smiled.
Transition: "You're trying to control my mind."
Magic Claw's expression changed.
Magic Claw: "How are you still conscious?"
Derek raised his hand.
Transition.
The effect suddenly disappeared from his mind.
Magic Claw staggered backward.
Magic Claw: "You transitioned the mind-control effect?"
Transition: "Apparently."
Magic Claw became desperate.
She knew ordinary attacks weren't working.
So she decided to use her most dangerous ability.
Reality manipulation.
Magic Claw stretched out both hands.
The world around Derek began changing.
Magic Claw: "I'll remove your power."
The energy surrounding Derek began to disappear.
For a moment, it looked like her plan had worked.
Magic Claw smiled.
Magic Claw: "It's over."
Derek looked at his hands.
Then he looked back at her.
He smiled.
Transition: "You should have been more careful."
Magic Claw froze.
Magic Claw: "What did you do?"
Derek raised his hand.
Transition.
Magic Claw suddenly felt something leave her.
Her magical energy disappeared.
Her ears remained.
Her tail remained.
But the supernatural power that had made her a powerful superhero was gone.
She couldn't teleport.
She couldn't create barriers.
She couldn't manipulate reality.
She couldn't even produce magical energy.
She was now an ordinary girl.
Magic Claw stared at her hands.
Magic Claw: "No…"
Derek had transitioned her own ability into her.
The reality manipulation she had attempted to use against him had effectively become part of her own downfall.
She looked at Derek.
For the first time, there was no magic left to protect her.
Derek walked toward her.
Magic Claw: "Wait…"
Derek stopped in front of her.
Transition: "You tried to remove my power."
He looked at her calmly.
Transition: "Instead, you gave me another way to remove yours."
Magic Claw realized that the fight had been decided the moment she tried to manipulate his ability.
Derek used Transitioning one final time.
Magic Claw fell silent.
Her fight against Transition was over.
Derek looked at the empty street.
Transition: "Magic. Reality manipulation. Mind control."
He continued walking.
Transition: "None of it matters if I can transition the problem away."
He disappeared into the darkness.
Another powerful superhero had challenged Transition.
And once again, Derek had demonstrated something increasingly terrifying:
The stronger and more complicated the opponent's abilities became, the more creative Transitioning could become against them.
