TRANSITIONING FROM A HERO TO A VILLAIN
Chapter 9: Transition's Hero Story
Before Derek Davidson became Transition...
He was a hero.
A completely different person.
He would run toward danger when everyone else was running away.
He rescued civilians.
He stopped criminals.
He protected people who couldn't protect themselves.
And most importantly—
He believed that everyone deserved a second chance.
But there was a problem with Derek's power.
Transitioning had limits.
Derek could transition himself and other things, but his own sense of responsibility constantly restricted how far he was willing to take the ability.
He always tried to use the safest possible transition.
If an enemy was attacking civilians, Derek wouldn't simply send them somewhere dangerous.
He would move them somewhere safe.
If a villain was about to attack someone, Derek would transition the weapon away.
If he could end a fight instantly, he often refused to do so because he didn't want to seriously hurt anyone.
He was always thinking:
"What happens to the innocent people?"
That hesitation made him weaker.
Not because his ability was naturally weak...
But because Derek himself was limiting it.
There were situations where he could have acted faster.
There were moments when he could have ended fights immediately.
But he always held back.
And sometimes...
People still died.
Derek remembered every one of them.
Every person he failed to save.
Every decision.
Every moment where he wondered whether he could have done more.
Then came the betrayal.
The government betrayed him.
They secretly worked with villains.
They destroyed his home.
They killed his family.
And eventually, Derek died after fighting against the people responsible.
But when he received his second chance...
Something inside him had changed.
The limiter was gone.
The part of Derek that constantly asked, "What if I hurt someone?"
was no longer controlling his ability.
His Transitioning began responding to what he believed needed to be transitioned.
Location.
People.
Objects.
Attacks.
Barriers.
Powers.
And even things that Derek previously believed were impossible to affect.
His ability had reached a level he had never accessed as a hero.
But Derek wasn't physically superhuman.
His body was still fundamentally human.
However, through years of training, he had developed himself to the peak of natural human physical potential.
His strength was exceptional for a human being.
His speed, coordination, reflexes, and physical conditioning were similarly highly developed.
But against supernatural beings?
It wasn't enough.
A magical superhero could possess strength far beyond human limits.
A monster could overpower him physically.
A superhuman could survive attacks that Derek couldn't.
Derek understood this perfectly.
That's why he rarely relied on his fists.
He relied on Transitioning.
Derek stood in front of a mirror in his apartment.
He looked at his reflection.
The man staring back at him was no longer the hero who once tried to save everyone.
Transition: "I used to think being strong meant being able to protect everyone."
He clenched his fist.
Transition: "I was wrong."
He opened his hand.
Transition: "Strength isn't enough."
His eyes narrowed.
Transition: "That's why I don't need to be the strongest person in the room."
He disappeared.
Transition.
A moment later, he appeared on the other side of the apartment.
Transition: "I just need to decide where everything belongs."
The hero Derek had once been believed his greatest responsibility was protecting people.
The villain Derek had become believed something completely different.
If something stood in his way...
He would transition it.
And that was the moment Derek finally understood the true potential of his ability.
Not because his body had become stronger.
Not because he had gained unlimited physical strength.
But because he had finally stopped limiting himself.
