Chapter 11 - Reflections of power

A bright noon sun hung high above the arena. The air felt lighter than the previous battles, but the tension had not faded. If anything, it had sharpened.

The audience buzzed with anticipation. Merchants moved between rows, children leaned over railings, and participants sat upright with focused expressions. Every new match now carried weight.

At the participant section, Vyvian leaned back lazily while Faye crossed her arms with a sly smile.

"So," she said casually, "do you think you'll even make it past your first battle?"

Vyvian scoffed. "Excuse me? I'm obviously advancing."

Rem sat between them, quiet as usual, observing the arena rather than joining the banter.

"Sure," Faye replied sweetly. "Just try not to trip on your way down there."

Vyvian opened his mouth to argue

The host's amplified voice cut through the stadium.

"Next round! Sterling from Valenor versus Soleene from Kindra!"

The crowd responded instantly, applause and murmurs rippling through the stands.

A tall figure rose from the participant seats.

Sterling.

A white cloak draped over his shoulders, falling almost to his boots. Beneath it, deep blue garments fitted neatly against his lean frame. Black boots stepped forward with calm precision. Around his neck rested a crystalline pendant that caught the sunlight and refracted it faintly.

His black hair was neatly arranged, and his silver eyes were emotionless. Not cold. Not arrogant.

Just… distant.

As if this battle meant nothing to him.

From the opposite side, Soleene stepped forward.

She carried herself with natural confidence. Her outfit was practical yet bold—dark half-length combat trousers that allowed free movement, paired with a fitted crop-length cotte reinforced lightly at the shoulders and chest. It balanced agility and durability perfectly. Her long wavy brown hair flowed behind her as she walked, chin slightly raised.

She looked ready.

The participants fell silent.

The signal was given.

Soleene moved first.

Light surged around her as she channeled Qi. Feathers burst outward from her arms and shoulders. Her spine shifted smoothly as large, powerful wings extended from her back, each feather sharp-edged and radiant. Her eyes turned golden, vision sharpening into predatory focus. Taloned claws replaced her hands and feet, curved and lethal. A layer of sleek brown and white plumage covered her form.

An eagle hybrid.

The crowd gasped in admiration.

But Sterling did not channel Qi.

There was no visible gathering of energy.

Instead the air around him fractured.

Shards of shimmering, mirror-like aura formed in a silent orbit around his body. They spun slowly, reflecting distorted fragments of the world around them.

His form blurred.

And then

He was gone.

In his place stood a full deer.

Not a hybrid.

Not a half-form.

A complete transformation.

His body was slender yet powerful, covered in pale silver fur that seemed to reflect light unnaturally. His antlers rose elegantly from his head, branching like polished glass, gleaming as if carved from living crystal. His eyes retained that same silver emptiness.

The crowd fell into stunned silence.

A full transformation in combat was rare.

And it didn't look entirely natural.

Vyvian leaned toward Rem. "Hey… why did he transform fully? And why does it look… off?"

Rem's eyes remained fixed on the battlefield.

"He likely fused his Qi element directly into his transformation," he replied calmly. "That's why it appears unnatural."

Vyvian blinked. "Fused his Qi? What does that even mean?"

"It means he has complete control over his Qi," Rem said. "He doesn't separate transformation and elemental usage. They're one."

Vyvian let out a quiet whistle.

Faye didn't speak, but her gaze sharpened.

On the battlefield, Soleene channeled her Qi again.

"Hyper Perception!"

Her golden eyes flared brighter.

The world slowed.

To her, the shifting dust in the air seemed suspended. The faint movements of Sterling's muscles became exaggerated. Every possible motion unfolded before her like predictable lines.

She dashed forward.

To the audience, she vanished in a blur.

Her punch struck Sterling's side.

A clean hit.

The deer form shifted slightly but did not fall.

Soleene laughed confidently. "You can't dodge it. My Qi lets me perceive everything at a slowed pace. I can react and strike before you even think to move."

Sterling did not respond.

Not a word.

The mirror shards orbiting him suddenly expanded outward.

Before Soleene could retreat, glowing fragments surrounded her completely, forming a floating cage of reflective surfaces. Light pulsed once

And then the shards dissolved into nothing.

She stood there unharmed.

No pain.No exhaustion.No visible effect.

Confusion flickered across her face.

She rushed forward again.

She punched.

Her fist passed through

Nothing.

Gasps erupted from the crowd.

She wasn't striking Sterling.

She was striking an image.

An illusion.

Behind her, the real Sterling stood silently, silver eyes observing.

For several long seconds, she continued attacking empty space, convinced her perception was flawless. Each strike hit air.

Murmurs spread across the arena.

"What is happening?"

"Is she missing?"

"Where is he?!"

Soleene's breathing grew heavier. Doubt crept in.

She stopped.

Slowly, she turned.

Sterling stood before her again.

She hesitated.

Is this real?

The moment her guard dropped

Mirror shards reformed instantly.

This time they shot forward.

They grazed her arms, shoulders, and legs, slicing shallow but painful wounds. Light reflected off each shard before they vanished again.

She staggered backward.

The host wasted no time.

"Winner of this round Sterling from Valenor!"

Silence lingered before scattered applause followed.

Sterling's deer form shimmered and dissolved back into his human shape. The shards faded. The white cloak settled over his shoulders once more.

Without acknowledging the crowd

Without looking at his opponent

He returned to his seat.

No expression changed.

The arena felt colder.

Vyvian exhaled slowly. "That… was terrifying. I didn't even understand what he did."

Faye nodded. "Neither did I. He barely moved… but controlled everything."

Rem remained silent.

His gaze lingered on Sterling a second longer than usual.

Then he looked away.

The arena had barely settled from Sterling's silent departure when the host's voice rang out once more.

"Next round! Vyvian from Rivera versus Terra from Pandora!"

A wave of murmurs swept through the stands.

Faye leaned toward Vyvian with a mischievous grin. "Best of luck. Try not to lose in the first round."

She laughed softly.

From a few seats away, Will cupped his hands around his mouth. "Good luck, Vyvian! Do your best!"

Vyvian swallowed.

His heart thumped harder than he expected.

But he forced a grin and nodded toward Will. "Thanks!"

Rem glanced at him briefly. "Do your best."

Just that.

Simple.

Vyvian nodded again, steadied his breathing, and walked toward the battlefield.

From the opposite side, Terra stepped forward.

She looked to be around Vyvian's age. Dark red hair framed her face, her slightly darker complexion glowing warmly beneath the sun. Bright yellow eyes reflected the light sharply, almost like a predator's gaze. She wore loose, practical clothing that didn't restrict her movements.

There was confidence in her steps.

Vyvian scratched the back of his head awkwardly as they faced each other.

"Hey… good luck. Let's do our best."

Terra grinned. "Yeah. You too."

The signal was given.

Terra moved first.

Qi surged around her in a fierce golden flare. Her body shifted rapidly muscles expanding, frame broadening. Orange fur burst across her skin, black stripes carving across her limbs and torso. Her hands transformed into massive tiger paws tipped with razor-sharp claws. Fangs lengthened within her mouth, and her yellow eyes sharpened into something feral.

A tiger hybrid.

The crowd gasped at the terrifying yet fascinating transformation.

Vyvian exhaled slowly.

Cold mist gathered around his body as he channeled his Qi. His pupils narrowed vertically. Faint scales shimmered along his arms and neck, glinting under the sunlight. His limbs grew more fluid in motion, shoulders slightly lowering as if coiling. A translucent serpentine aura flickered behind him.

A snake hybrid.

The reaction from the crowd was noticeably quieter this time.

Terra didn't wait.

She leaped high into the air, shadow swallowing Vyvian beneath her.

She came crashing down with a roar.

Vyvian rolled desperately to the side, the ground cracking where she landed.

Before she could recover, he dashed forward and threw a punch straight at her torso.

It landed.

But

Terra barely flinched.

Her muscular frame absorbed the impact as if it were nothing.

From the stands, Faye let out a disappointed sigh.

Rem's eyes narrowed slightly.

Cherri, watching from her seat with full focus, thought to herself:

At this rate… he's not making it far.

Terra retaliated instantly.

Her paw struck Vyvian square in the chest.

He was sent flying backward, skidding across the arena floor before landing on his back.

Pain shot through him.

For a moment, doubt crept in.

But he forced himself up.

Terra began channeling her Qi again.

Wooden logs materialized around her, thick and solid, forming from condensed earth energy. With a sharp motion, she hurled them toward Vyvian.

One after another.

Vyvian dodged most of them by inches, rolling and twisting desperately but one log clipped his side and knocked him off balance.

He gritted his teeth.

Cold Qi surged through him.

He dashed forward again.

Terra smirked, assuming another weak punch.

She raised her arms to block.

But just as Vyvian closed the distance—

A burst of freezing energy exploded outward from him.

The ground beneath them instantly turned to ice, spreading rapidly in a circular shockwave. Terra lost her footing as the frozen surface cracked beneath her, sending her stumbling backward.

She reacted fast.

A wooden log formed in her hands, and she swung it toward Vyvian with immense force.

He barely ducked in time, the log whistling past his head.

Cold energy gathered in both of Vyvian's hands.

With a sharp exhale, he thrust them forward.

A concentrated beam of frost shot toward Terra, striking the wooden log and her right arm. Ice spread instantly, freezing both the weapon and her limb solid.

The frozen log shattered under the pressure.

Terra growled and struggled to pull her arm free.

From the stands, Rem and Faye leaned forward slightly.

Vyvian was pushing himself.

Terra reacted quickly.

Using her free hand, she generated another wooden log and smashed it against the frozen limb, breaking the ice and freeing herself.

But in that brief moment

Vyvian had already begun channeling again.

Cold mist flooded the battlefield.

An icy aura spread across the ground like creeping frost.

Terra's eyes widened.

Before she could react, the aura solidified.

The ground exploded upward in massive ice spikes.

Terra was launched into the air.

She twisted midair, stabilizing herself with impressive control.

But Vyvian was already moving.

He leaped upward along the very ice spikes he created, bounding higher with each step.

His hands glowed with intense freezing Qi.

He reached her height.

And with a shout

He slammed his palm directly into her face.

Frost burst outward instantly.

Ice spread across her body midair, encasing her in a frozen shell before gravity pulled her downward.

She crashed onto the arena floor, completely immobilized.

Silence.

Then

The crowd erupted in amazement.

The host's voice rang out clearly.

"Winner of this round Vyvian from Rivera!"

The ice gradually melted as officials rushed in.

Vyvian stood there for a second, stunned.

Then he smiled.

A genuine, relieved smile.

His snake features faded as he destransformed, scales retreating and aura dissolving.

He walked back toward the participant seats.

Faye smirked. "Well done. I guess you're not completely dumb after all."

Rem nodded slightly. "Nice one."

Vyvian grinned. "Thanks. Both of you."

From across the seats, Will shouted loudly, "NICE ONE, VYVIAN!"

Vyvian laughed and waved. "Thanks!"

A little further away, Cherri watched him quietly.

Her lips curved into a faint smirk.

I guess you've improved… since the last time we met.

The battles continued, the arena still buzzing with excitement.

After some time, the host's voice echoed once more.

"Next round! Sylvie from Dilyn versus Emberlyn from Dilyn!"

A ripple of surprise spread across the audience.

Faye tilted her head slightly. "Seems like they're from the same village."

Vyvian nodded. "Yeah… that's interesting."

Rem said nothing.

His eyes were already fixed on the battlefield.

From the eastern gate, two girls walked out side by side.

They looked nearly identical.

Blonde hair shimmered under the light. Clear blue eyes. Same height. Same face.

Twin sisters.

Yet their clothing made them easy to distinguish.

One wore vibrant, colorful garments layered playfully in reds, yellows, and soft blues, almost like festival attire. The other dressed in sharp black-and-white clothing, simple but striking with clean lines and minimal detail.

Despite the upcoming fight, both were smiling.

They stopped at the center.

High five.

"Good luck, sister," Sylvie said brightly. "Let's do our best."

Emberlyn grinned. "Obviously."

They stepped apart as the signal was given.

Sylvie moved first.

Dark violet Qi shimmered around her as her body began to change. Her ears sharpened and elongated. Thin membranes stretched from her arms down along her sides as her fingers thinned into wing-like extensions. Soft black fur dusted across her shoulders and spine. Her pupils narrowed, adjusting as if sensing beyond normal sight. Small fangs peeked from her lips as her smile turned sly.

A bat hybrid.

The crowd murmured in fascination.

Emberlyn inhaled calmly.

Golden Qi erupted around her.

Her posture lowered slightly as dark chitin-like armor formed across her limbs and torso in segmented patterns. Her strength condensed inward. Two delicate antennae extended from her head, twitching subtly. Her hands hardened into compact but powerful claws.

An ant hybrid.

The arena grew quiet.

Emberlyn raised her hand.

Golden light gathered into a glowing orb above her palm.

Then another.

Then another.

Without hesitation, she hurled them toward Sylvie.

"EXPLODE!"

The orbs detonated midair with thunderous force, shockwaves rippling across the ground.

"Phantom Phase."

Sylvie's voice echoed softly.

Her body blurred.

Then vanished.

The explosions struck empty space.

The crowd gasped.

"She disappeared?!"

"There's no trace of her!"

For several seconds, the battlefield stood empty except for Emberlyn amidst settling dust.

Then Sylvie reappeared behind her sister.

A swift strike to the neck.

Emberlyn staggered forward but did not panic.

In one smooth motion, she created two more golden orbs.

"Implode."

The first orb collapsed inward violently, crushing the surrounding air.

"Explode."

The second detonated outward at the same time.

The opposing forces collided around Sylvie.

The implosion dragged her off balance.

The explosion blasted her backward.

She crashed onto the ground and rolled.

Before the dust cleared, she vanished again.

The crowd erupted into confusion.

"Where did she go?!"

"Is it teleportation?"

Emberlyn stood still, eyes sharp.

She knew her sister's rhythm.

She understood her habits better than anyone.

A faint distortion flickered behind her.

Sylvie reappeared mid-strike.

But Emberlyn was already prepared.

Golden orbs had formed silently around her in advance.

The instant Sylvie entered range

"Implode. Explode."

A chain reaction ignited.

Orbs collapsed inward and burst outward in rapid succession. Overlapping shockwaves distorted the air. The implosions pulled Sylvie toward the center while explosions struck from multiple directions.

Caught off guard.

Unable to phase in time.

Sylvie was blasted backward and slammed onto the ground.

This time, she did not vanish.

Silence filled the arena for a brief moment.

Then the crowd cheered loudly.

The host raised his hand.

"Winner of this round, Emberlyn from Dilyn!"

Golden light faded. Dark fur and chitin dissolved as both sisters returned to normal.

Emberlyn walked over and extended her hand.

Sylvie looked up, smiled warmly, and accepted it.

"You always beat me," Sylvie said lightly. "You deserve the win, sis."

Emberlyn pulled her up gently. "I believe you'll be stronger than me someday."

They shared a quiet laugh before jogging back to their seats together.

Vyvian blinked. "Wow… that Emberlyn girl already knew exactly what her sister was going to do."

Faye shrugged. "They're sisters. I half expected something like that."

Rem remained silent.

His gaze lingered thoughtfully on the battlefield.

Some battles weren't decided by strength alone.

Sometimes, understanding your opponent was the real advantage.
