Chapter 19 - fire and blood

Morning light spilled across the castle courtyard, but there was no peace. Smoke twisted into the sky from the battle raging below. Ayla's heart raced as she sprinted up the stairs of the North Tower, breath ragged, her mind sharp with urgency. She didn't stop until she reached the top.

A soldier in command waited there, tense and alert. She handed him the message without hesitation.

"This is crucial information," he said, reading quickly. "Thank you, Princess."

Ayla's eyes scanned the battlefield. Enemy troops swarmed the castle walls. Her own soldiers fought desperately. She saw Rainer commanding the defense, his sword flashing. Beside him, calm and composed, stood Calantha.

A surge of anger and jealousy rose, but she pushed it aside. Now was not the time.

The soldier beside her followed her gaze. "It's not going well, Princess, is it?"

"No," she admitted, "but we must hold them. We can't falter."

A horn blared. More enemy troops arrived, swarming the walls. Panic threatened to overtake her, but she drew in a breath and focused. Then, a roar split the air.

Her father Ayla's own father the king of Valarie, rushed into the fray, leading a cavalry charge against the invaders.

Sword drawn, shield raised, he fought with strength and courage, his soldiers rallying behind him. Beside him, Ryker cut through the enemy ranks, fighting with deadly precision.

Ayla's chest swelled with pride and relief. He was here.

He would help.

But horror struck moments later.

Across the courtyard, her father-in-law the king, Ryker and Rainer's father stood observing the battle.

Lady Valtira moved in the shadows, a small, delicate box in her hands.

She muttered to herself, eyes fixed on him.

Suddenly, the box snapped open, and a homing pigeon shot forth, flying to the enemy leader with a message.

The leader read it, eyes gleaming with triumph. Then Lady Valtira stepped forward, dagger in hand.

The king's confusion was brief. Before anyone could react, the dagger found its mark. He fell, a cry escaping him as life drained away.

Ayla screamed, shock and grief coursing through her.

Ryker's eyes widened in horror as he realized who had fallen.

He ran to him

"Father…" he whispered, voice breaking, kneeling beside him.

Ayla rushed from to tower with tears,

Ayla dropped to her knees beside him.

"I saw it happen, Ryker.

Lady Valtira… she did this."

Ryker's face went pale. "We have to get out of here… now."

The ground trembled as a massive piece of debris tumbled nearby, striking Ryker squarely.

He crumpled to the ground, unconscious. Ayla's heart leapt.

"Ryker! Wake up!" she cried, shaking him gently.

A calm, commanding voice cut through the chaos. "Take him to safety. I'll cover you."

Ayla spun. Her father, fighting bravely outside, stood behind her. "Go, Ayla. Take Ryker. Now," he ordered, unwavering.

"Dad… be careful!" she cried.

He nodded once. "Go. Protect him. Protect the kingdom."

Ayla dragged Ryker into her arms, determination settling like steel in her chest.

From this moment, the battle was no longer just about defending the castle it was about survival, justice, and vengeance.

And beneath her skin, something stirred. Quiet. Warm. Awake.
