Between the previous meeting and the next, Eugene found out the meaning of that 'support', which essentially meant sponsorship. Sophie — or rather, the foundation — would provide the money for everything Eugene needed until he could return to his normal life.
In that next meeting, Eugene brought a figurative hammer.
"I'm not going to take it," he said without waiting for Sophie's usual greeting. "Tell me how much you've spent on me--I'll return everything."
Once again, Sophie was astonished. Her interest meter in this messy, but also strangely put together omega skyrocketed. People...didn't usually reject help when they were in a facility. Wasn't staying there already used up the donors' and taxpayers' money?
Was it pride? Was it just his rebellious nature?
"That's funny," Sophie reacted calmly.
"...what?"
At that moment, Sophie almost giggled--which, in a way, felt worse than a smirk for Eugene.
