Chapter 73: The Information Goldmine
POV: Caroline Forbes
Caroline sits in during Katherine's interrogations because someone needs to document everything and verify Sam's not being manipulated by five-hundred-year-old vampire who's perfected deception.
The sessions happen over a week, with Klaus and Elijah participating to verify Katherine's information against their own historical knowledge.
"Mikael," Katherine begins on day three, after spending days providing lesser intelligence to establish credibility. "Klaus's father. The vampire who hunts vampires. You want to know where he is?"
Klaus goes absolutely still—the kind of predatory stillness that precedes violence.
"How long have you known?" Klaus asks dangerously.
"Five hundred years," Katherine replies with satisfaction that suggests this was her insurance policy all along. "He's sealed in a tomb in Charlotte by witches I paid to maintain the spell. As long as I kept paying, they kept him contained. I stopped paying three months ago when you were daggered—figured the seal would hold without maintenance long enough for me to escape this country."
Elijah and Rebekah exchange horrified glances.
"Father's in Charlotte," Elijah breathes. "Less than two hundred miles from here. If the seal fails—"
"He'll come straight for Klaus," Katherine finishes cheerfully. "Mikael's obsessive. He's spent a thousand years hunting his hybrid son. You think he'll stop now?"
Sam's already on his phone coordinating with Bonnie. "We need to reinforce those seals. If Mikael wakes up, everyone in Mystic Falls becomes collateral damage."
Klaus looks genuinely shaken for the first time since Caroline's known him. "My father is the one creature I actually fear. He's stronger than any Original, driven by hatred that makes him relentless. If he wakes—"
"He doesn't wake," Sam interrupts firmly. "We reinforce the seals, establish monitoring protocols, and prepare contingencies if containment fails. Same way we've handled every other threat."
On day five, Sam asks about Esther's coffin—the mysterious fifth coffin that even Elijah won't fully explain.
Katherine laughs like she's been waiting for this question. "You don't know? Oh, this is delicious. That coffin doesn't just contain Klaus's mother. It contains her alive but sealed by her own magic."
Caroline's blood runs cold. Sam's Magic Absorption clone, monitoring the interrogation for truthfulness, flickers with purple-black energy that confirms Katherine's emotional sincerity.
"Explain," Sam demands.
"Esther tried to kill all her children before Klaus daggered her," Katherine explains. "She wanted to reverse vampirism, make them mortal, then execute them for the 'abomination' she'd created. But Klaus discovered her plan and daggered her first. Except Esther's the Original witch—she'd prepared contingencies. Her spirit, her consciousness, remains tethered to her body. She's not dead. She's waiting."
"Waiting for what?" Caroline asks, her voice shaking.
"For someone to release her," Katherine says simply. "And when that happens, she'll resume her mission—genocide of all vampires, starting with her children."
The implications crash over the room like tidal wave.
Klaus has both his father and his mother as existential threats, either of whom could kill him and everyone he's claimed as family or allies.
"This is the information you were hiding," Klaus says to Elijah. "You knew mother was alive in that coffin."
"I knew she was preserved," Elijah admits. "I didn't know about her mission to eliminate us. Mother was mad with grief and rage when Klaus daggered her—I thought time in the coffin might have... calmed her."
"Time doesn't heal wounds like that," Katherine observes. "It lets them fester. If Esther wakes, she'll be even more determined to end what she started."
Sam's already making tactical calculations Caroline can see in his expression—the same focused intensity he gets when coordinating complex operations.
"Mikael's seal gets reinforced immediately," Sam decides. "Esther's coffin gets moved to secure location with enhanced protections. And we develop contingency protocols for both potential awakenings."
Over the remaining interrogation sessions, Katherine provides: Klaus's historical enemies list (extensive and terrifying), white oak tree remnant locations (scattered across three continents), hybrid creation weaknesses (sire bond can be exploited), and various other intelligence accumulated over five centuries of paranoid survival.
By week's end, Sam's compiled enough information to fill three notebooks with strategic value.
"This is everything," Katherine says finally. "Now honor your agreement."
Sam does. He arranges forged documents, new identity, and safe passage to South America through contacts Caroline didn't know he had.
Klaus watches Katherine leave with obvious skepticism. "You let her go. She'll betray you eventually."
"Eventually isn't today," Sam replies. "And we got what we needed."

That night, Klaus stands on the Salvatore balcony with Sam, staring in Charlotte's direction like he can see through the distance to his father's tomb.
"My father. My mother. Both capable of killing me and everyone I love," Klaus says quietly. "You've given me nightmares I'd forgotten about."
"Now we plan how to prevent those nightmares," Sam replies. "Together."
Klaus nods slowly. "You're surprisingly good at this, Sam Barton. Strategy, diplomacy, warfare. Who taught you? Where did a seventeen-year-old human learn to coordinate supernatural politics like you've been doing it for decades?"
Sam deflects with practiced ease: "Experience. Necessity. Survival."
Klaus doesn't believe him—Caroline can see the skepticism in his expression—but he lets it pass.
"Keep your secrets," Klaus says. "Just know that I'm paying attention. And when I figure out what you're really hiding, we'll have very interesting conversation about honesty and trust."
Caroline finds Sam later, processing everything they've learned.
"Mikael and Esther," she says. "Klaus's parents both want him dead. That's..."
"Complicated," Sam finishes. "And dangerous. But manageable if we're careful."
"You always say that," Caroline observes. "That everything's manageable. Do you actually believe it, or is it just what you tell yourself to keep functioning?"
Sam's quiet for a moment before answering honestly: "Both. I have to believe we can survive, or I'd collapse under the weight of everything trying to kill us. But I also genuinely think we're building something strong enough to weather these threats."
Caroline kisses him, grounding them both in the moment. "Then we keep building. Together."
Tomorrow brings new challenges—reinforcing Mikael's seals, securing Esther's coffin, managing Klaus's paranoia, and whatever other supernatural catastrophes are gathering on the horizon.
But tonight, they've survived Katherine's revenge and gained intelligence that might keep them alive through what comes next.
