Chapter 97: Prom Night - The Battle Part 2

POV: Sam Barton

Shane realizes his Expression-vampires are losing despite the enhancement. Eight are dead, only seven remain, and Klaus's hybrids are systematically eliminating them with centuries of combat experience.

"If I can't have three hundred deaths," Shane snarls, "I'll take what I can!"

He channels everything—months of accumulated death magic, Expression power from nine ritual sites, the desperate fury of someone whose grand plan is collapsing.

The necrotic blast forms above him like miniature sun made of darkness.

It's aimed at the largest group of students—fifty teenagers including Matt and Elena huddled behind my Defensive Shield clone's barrier.

I see it in slow motion through Enhanced Speed perception: the death magic coalescing, the trajectory calculated to maximize casualties, Shane's expression of triumph as he releases the killing blow.

My Mind Shield and Defensive Shield clones throw themselves into the blast path simultaneously without hesitation or orders from me—they're parts of my mind, and we all know what needs to happen.

Their combined barriers catch the necrotic energy.

For three seconds, they hold.

Then the death magic overwhelms them, and I feel my clones disintegrate through the system connection—agony that's both physical and spiritual as pieces of myself are destroyed.

[CLONE 1 (MIND SHIELD): DESTROYED]

[CLONE 2 (DEFENSIVE SHIELD): DESTROYED]

[PERMANENT LOSS UNLESS CLONE RESURRECTION PERFORMED]

[REQUIREMENTS: 5,000 MP, RARE MATERIALS, 30-DAY COOLDOWN]

I collapse to one knee, gasping from feedback pain. Those clones had personalities, memories, were extensions of my consciousness developed over months of existence.

Gone.

Burned away protecting fifty lives.

Caroline screams my name. Klaus intercepts a vampire attacking my vulnerable moment, ripping its heart out with vicious efficiency. "The boy just saved fifty lives! Honor his sacrifice!"

The System chimes with grim finality:

[HEROIC SACRIFICE DETECTED]

[FIFTY LIVES SAVED AT PERSONAL COST]

[TACTICAL VICTORY THROUGH LOSS]

[EXPERIENCE GAINED: +2,100]

[LEVEL 37 → 38 ACHIEVED!]

[+5 STAT POINTS AVAILABLE]

[WARNING: CLONE SLOTS REDUCED]

[REMAINING: 4 ACTIVE CLONES]

[TOTAL SLOTS: 6 (2 PERMANENTLY LOST PENDING RESURRECTION)]

I allocate the stats through tears and rage: three Agility for combat speed that might prevent future losses, two Vitality for survival.

[FINAL LEVEL 38 STATS:]

[STR 10, AGI 40, VIT 51, INT 54, WIS 55, PER 26, CHA 26]

[HP: 1,220/1,220, MP: 960/960, MP REGEN: 55/MIN]

The rage burns through grief.

I blur at Shane with Enhanced Speed amplified by forty Agility, my remaining four clones coordinating in perfect synchronization.

Phasing passes through Shane's Expression barriers, disrupting his defenses from inside.

Sensory identifies the weak points in his magical structure—places where death energy flows less efficiently.

Magic Absorption drains power faster than Shane can channel it, my clone blazing so bright he's visible to normal humans.

Strength delivers blows enhanced by supernatural force, each impact cracking Shane's magical shields.

And Bonnie joins my fury, channeling every Bennett ancestor simultaneously in assault that makes the gymnasium's walls crack.

"You killed them!" I scream, hitting Shane with speed he can't track. "They were parts of me, and you destroyed them!"

Shane staggers under the combined assault. "You've delayed nothing! Silas will wake—the travelers, the cure, destiny itself demands it!"

Bonnie's ancestors bind him with chains made of light, Expression power finally overwhelmed by ancestral magic and my relentless attack.

Shane collapses, screaming as the binding takes hold.

Sheriff Liz's tactical team bursts through the doors—Bonnie broke the sealing spell during our final assault. They swarm Shane with vervain-laced restraints, arresting him while Klaus and the alliance finish the remaining vampires.

The battle ends.

Seven Expression-vampires dead. Five compelled witches freed from Shane's control and fled. Shane captured. Three hundred students alive.

Zero civilian casualties.

But two of my clones are gone forever unless I can gather resources for resurrection ritual I've never attempted.

I collapse into Caroline's arms, mourning pieces of myself that died protecting strangers who'll never understand what was sacrificed.

"They're gone," I whisper. "Mind Shield and Defensive Shield. Parts of me. Gone."

Caroline cries with me, holding me tight while the gymnasium fills with police and paramedics. "But we're alive. Everyone's alive because of you. Because they chose to protect us."

Matt approaches cautiously, looking at me with new understanding. "Sam... those shadow things that saved us. They were you, weren't they? Parts of you that died so we could live."

I nod, unable to speak.

Matt extends his hand. "Thank you. For everything. For being whatever you are and using it to protect people like me who can't protect themselves."

Around us, students who witnessed my clones' sacrifice watch with respect instead of fear. They don't understand the supernatural mechanics, but they know what heroism looks like.

Klaus finds me as paramedics treat shocked students. "You lost pieces of yourself today, Sam Barton. But you proved what I've known since we met—you're worthy of the power you wield. Those clones died heroically."

"They died because I wasn't strong enough to protect them and the students simultaneously," I correct bitterly.

"They died fulfilling their purpose," Klaus counters. "Protecting life at any cost. There's no greater honor."

Bonnie collapses beside me, exhausted from channeling that much ancestral power. "Shane's defeated. But he's right about one thing—Silas's awakening is still coming. This was just delaying action."

I look at my remaining four clones—Sensory, Strength, Magic Absorption, and Phasing. Two empty slots where Mind Shield and Defensive Shield should be.

The price of victory is sometimes measured in pieces of your soul.

But three hundred people are alive because two parts of me chose sacrifice over survival.

I'll mourn my lost clones.

Then I'll figure out how to resurrect them and prepare for Silas's inevitable awakening.
