Chapter 214 - Identity Exposed, Little Bug's Love

"What's going on outside?" Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, who were enjoying a musical at the opera house, clearly felt the vibrations beneath their feet. The sudden disturbance made Gwen couldn't help but grumble. At that moment, everyone in the opera house felt the distinct tremor.

"Is it an earthquake?" someone asked. As the question spread through the crowd, anxiety began to spread. In such circumstances, no one was interested in continuing the performance. Similarly, the performers lacked the courage to carry on.

Almost everyone stood up and instinctively moved toward the exit. They were thinking clearly: no one would risk dying in an earthquake just to watch a song and dance performance, not even a slight chance.

When they saw even the dancers who had just been performing on stage jump down and merge into the fleeing crowd, Gwen could only say to her boyfriend:

"Oh, damn it. What a terrible day!"

"I'm sorry, Gwen. It's all my fault today!" Regardless of the reason, Peter immediately took responsibility. This tactic worked well on Gwen. She gripped his hand in return, shaking her head and smiling. "Never mind. At least you didn't disappoint me today!"

Seeing that his girlfriend had finally softened and completely forgiven him for his mistake, Peter let out a long sigh of relief.

"You know, Gwen, you nearly scared me to death."

"It's for your own good, Peter. If I hadn't done that, you might have forgotten I even exist as your girlfriend."

Hand in hand, they followed the crowd, talking as they went. Though the musical was out of the question, they still had plenty of ways to pass the time.

Just as they were nearing the main gate, a sudden commotion erupted in the crowd ahead. People scattered in panic, while others huddled in safe corners, trembling. Peter wondered what was happening—an earthquake, perhaps?

A military jeep was hurtling toward him like a meteor, trailing sporadic flames. Its front end was completely twisted into a concave shape, as if it had been struck by a massive object. Peter could see the dead soldier inside.

As the jeep closed in, Gwen beside him stood frozen in terror. Without a second thought, Peter wrapped his arms around her, leaped into the air, and began a dazzling mid-air gymnastics routine.

Peter held Gwen gently as he stretched out in mid-air. His arms wrapped tightly around his girlfriend, while his legs spun like helicopter blades, propelling his body into a near-perfect dodge, grazing the speeding Jeep by a hair's breadth.

Gwen watched, wide-eyed, as the flames of the explosion streaked past right in front of her nose. The twisted car door was within arm's reach. She could even clearly see the face of the dead soldier inside. It was unbelievable, like something out of a dream, yet it was happening right before her eyes.

But what astonished her even more was Peter's performance. As a former high school cheerleader, Gwen understood the full implications of what he had just done. To put it bluntly, even an Olympic-level gymnast couldn't achieve such a feat of evasion. It seemed to transcend human capabilities. And now, this level of skill was displayed by her boyfriend. How could Gwen not be utterly bewildered?

"Peter, what's going on?" Gwen asked, staring at him in astonishment. She desperately wanted to know how her usually mild-mannered boyfriend would explain this.

"Gwen, I... Watch out!" Peter opened his mouth, his mind racing to come up with a plausible excuse. Just then, his Spider-Sense suddenly activated. He quickly pulled Gwen into his arms, shielding her with his body.

Before Gwen could figure out what Peter was doing, an explosion erupted behind them. A torrent of flames shot toward them like a venomous dragon emerging from its lair. Peter swiftly threw his coat over himself and Gwen, pressing them both to the ground.

Fortunately, the flames passed as quickly as they came. After the blast and the fiery shockwave blasted through the doorway and into the street, Peter felt the burning pain on his back disappear. He stood up, tore off his coat, and frantically patted out the flames. "Are you okay, Gwen?" he asked, his voice shaky.

"I'm fine, I'm okay. What about you, Peter?" Under his protection, Gwen hadn't sustained a single scratch, only a fright. When she saw Peter patting out the flames, she immediately asked with concern. Peter's actions had moved her deeply while simultaneously terrifying her. She was touched that his first thought had been to save her, but afraid he might have perished in the explosion.

However, seeing Peter patting out the flames with a pained expression, she knew things weren't as bad as she'd feared. Still, she wanted to check him herself.

"Let me see, Peter. Let me check if you're hurt."

"I'm fine, Gwen. I'm perfectly alright, not a scratch." Peter tried to refuse her concern, but under her insistence, he obediently stood still and let her examine him.

"Good, you don't seem to be badly injured!" Gwen breathed a sigh of relief when she noticed no severe damage to his clothes. But her relief quickly faded. "What's this?"

She reached out and touched the back of Peter's shirt, where a large hole had been burned through by the flames. Through this hole, Gwen saw a strange red and blue fabric. She gripped the fabric and looked up at Peter.

"Peter, what's going on?"

"Gwen, I—" Before she could finish, Gwen yanked open his collar. There, she clearly saw the distinct spider symbol on the tight-fitting suit underneath.

If she had only seen this, Gwen might have thought he was just a Spider-Man fan, perhaps a bit too enthusiastic. But considering everything that had just happened, and Peter's frequent disappearances and unreachability, she was now 100% certain of his other identity.

"You're Spider-Man?" she asked, her eyes wide with disbelief. Peter looked flustered.

"Gwen, I didn't mean to keep this from you. You know I've always felt so..."

"Cool!" Gwen blurted out her true feelings before Peter could finish speaking. "My boyfriend is actually Spider-Man! That's so awesome! I'm totally posting this on Facebook. Come on, Peter, give us a smile!"

"Gwen, no, no, no! I mean, you can't tell anyone about this!" Peter quickly grabbed her hand as she pulled out her phone.

"Why not?" Gwen asked, curious.

Peter immediately gave his reasons: "First, the police are still after me. I consider myself a vigilante, but your dad doesn't seem to agree. Second, besides rich eccentrics like Tony Stark, have you ever seen a superhero reveal their identity? Keeping your true identity secret is part of being a superhero. Third, even if you did post it on Facebook, they wouldn't believe I'm the real Spider-Man. They'd just think you're a fraud—and there are plenty of those out there. They'll do anything for clicks."

"Are you sure?" Gwen asked hesitantly, hearing his excuses. Peter nodded immediately. "I'm sure, and I promise everything I've said is true."

"Alright, that's a shame. But Peter, every time you've canceled our dates, you've been lying to me, haven't you? You've been off being Spider-Man, haven't you!"

"Sometimes yes, sometimes no. You know, Spider-Man isn't needed all the time," Peter shrugged, putting on a helpless expression. Gwen, furious, twisted his arm hard.

"Listen, I'll let it slide for the past. But from now on, you have to tell me the truth!"

"No problem, I promise." This was perfect. Peter couldn't have wished for anything better. Just then, a thunderous roar erupted from outside the door, accompanied by a violent explosion and the cries of people in distress.

"Looks like it's time for me to go, Gwen. Our date will have to be postponed again. You'd better stay clear—that guy outside doesn't sound like a pushover!"

Hearing the commotion outside, Peter smiled at his girlfriend. He pushed Gwen to a safe spot and darted into a hidden corner. Moments later, a Spider-Man in a red and blue suit appeared before Gwen. He gave her a salute, then leaped nimbly through the opera house doors.

As soon as he stepped outside, the web-slinging hero spotted a striking figure.

The Hulk was striding down the street, cradling Betty in his arms. Military vehicles and police cars surrounded him, their presence overwhelming. Soldiers and officers stood guard by the vehicles, their weapons so formidable they could have sparked a regional conflict in the Middle East.

Yet the Hulk ignored this imposing military and police presence, marching forward as if they were invisible. Hilariously, as the Hulk advanced, the soldiers and police began to retreat, their fear of him palpable.

"Alright, it's time to show off some real skills. Go get 'em, bug!" Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, silently rallied himself, ready for action.
