Chapter Eleven: The Fire That Burns Quietly

The Estate at Night

The estate was silent, its corridors bathed in soft lamplight. Liu lay awake in her room, staring at the ceiling. The kiss from Xia still lingered on her lips, a phantom warmth she couldn't shake. She pressed her fingers against them, whispering to herself.

> Liu (softly): "Naughty man…"

Her cheeks flushed, but her smile faded quickly. She remembered Don. His hands. His kiss. The violation. Her chest tightened, her breath shallow. She turned on her side, clutching the pillow.

> "Why does it feel like I'm being pulled in two directions?"

She closed her eyes, forcing herself to sleep.

The Morning Routine

By dawn, Liu was up, dressed neatly in her academy uniform. She tied her hair into a high ponytail, her movements precise, almost mechanical. She avoided the dining hall, choosing instead to sip tea alone in the garden.

Xia noticed.

From his study window, he watched her—her posture stiff, her gaze distant. He didn't call out. He didn't interrupt. He simply observed, his mind already calculating.

> Xia (to himself): "She's strong. But even steel bends under pressure."

---

Don's Exile

Meanwhile, Don sat in his new apartment across town. The walls were bare, the air stale. He hadn't unpacked. He hadn't slept. He sat on the couch, staring at nothing, his mind replaying Liu's slap, her tears, her words.

> "Why would you do that?"

He clenched his fists, shame burning in his chest. For the first time in his life, he felt small. Weak. Wrong.

> Don (to himself): "I ruined it. I ruined everything."

But even as guilt gnawed at him, another voice whispered.

> "She's still yours. She has to be."

At the Academy: Gossip and Glory

The academy buzzed with whispers. Liu's victory in the dissection challenge had spread like wildfire. Students spoke of her precision, her calm under sabotage, her frog that lived when it should have died.

Nari walked beside her, grinning.

> Nari: "You're famous now. Everyone's talking about you."

> Liu (smiling faintly): "Let them talk."

> Nari: "Even the professors are impressed. Did you see Dr. Mori's face yesterday? She looked like she wanted to adopt you."

Liu chuckled, shaking her head.

> Liu: "I don't need adoption. I need results."

They entered the lecture hall, where Mika sat surrounded by her fan girls. Her eyes locked on Liu, sharp and cold.

> Mika (loudly, to her friends): "Some people get lucky once and think they're legends."

Her entourage laughed. Liu ignored her, sliding into her seat beside Nari.

> Nari (whispering): "She's obsessed with you."

> Liu (calmly): "Good. Obsession makes people sloppy."

The Principal's Interest

Later that afternoon, Liu was summoned to the principal's office. She entered cautiously, bowing slightly.

The principal, a stern woman with silver hair and piercing eyes, gestured for her to sit. Professor Takeda stood nearby, arms crossed, watching.

> Principal: "Your performance yesterday was… extraordinary."

> Liu (modestly): "Thank you."

> Principal: "You improvised under sabotage. You kept calm. You achieved perfection. That is rare."

Takeda stepped forward.

> Takeda: "You remind me of someone I once taught. Brilliant. Dangerous. Unstoppable."

Liu tilted her head, curious.

> Liu: "Is that a compliment?"

> Takeda (smiling faintly): "It's a warning."

The principal leaned forward.

> Principal: "We'll be watching you closely, Liu Lingin. Don't disappoint us."

Liu bowed again, her heart steady.

> Liu: "I won't."

Evening at the Estate

That night, Liu returned home, exhausted but proud. She entered the dining hall, where Xia sat alone, sipping wine. He looked up as she approached.

> Xia: "You skipped breakfast."

> Liu (shrugging): "I wasn't hungry."

> Xia: "You're hungry now."

She sat, pouring herself tea. He watched her, his gaze steady, his expression unreadable.

> Xia: "I heard about your frog."

She blinked, surprised.

> Liu: "You… heard?"

> Xia (smiling faintly): "I hear everything."

She blushed, sipping her tea.

> Liu: "It was nothing."

> Xia: "It was perfection."

Her cheeks warmed. She looked away, hiding her smile.

The Quiet Bond

Later, Liu found herself in Xia's room again. She hadn't planned it. She told herself it was just to check on him, to ask about his day. But when she entered, he was already waiting, his gaze soft.

> Xia: "You keep coming back."

> Liu (teasing): "Maybe I like annoying you."

> Xia: "Maybe you like me."

Her face burned. She turned away, pouting.

> Liu: "You're insufferable."

He chuckled, reaching for her hand. She hesitated, then let him hold it. His grip was firm, warm, grounding.

For a moment, the world was quiet.

No academy. No rivals. No Don.

Just them.

Cliffhanger Ending

But outside the estate, in the shadows of the city, Don watched from a distance. His eyes burned, his fists clenched.

He saw Liu's silhouette in Xia's window. He saw her laughter. Her smile.

And something inside him snapped.

> Don (to himself): "If I can't have her… no one will."
