Chapter Twelve: Shadows and Sparks

The Estate: A Quiet Unease

The estate was unusually still that evening. Liu sat in the garden, her notebook open but untouched. The koi pond rippled softly, reflecting the lantern light. She traced circles on the page, her mind elsewhere.

She thought of Xia—his kiss, his laughter, his teasing words. She thought of Don—his violation, his shame. And she thought of herself—caught between duty and desire, between ambition and emotion.

Her chest tightened.

> "I can't afford to feel. Not now. Not yet."

She closed the notebook, stood, and walked inside. But even as she moved through the halls, she felt Xia's eyes on her—watchful, protective, possessive.

Don's Obsession

Across town, Don sat in his apartment, the lights dim, the air heavy. He hadn't unpacked. He hadn't eaten. He hadn't slept. He sat on the couch, staring at the wall, his mind consumed by Liu.

He remembered her tears. Her slap. Her rejection.

But he also remembered her lips. Her warmth. Her fire.

> Don (to himself): "She's mine. She has to be."

He stood, pacing, his fists clenched.

> Don: "Xia thinks he can keep her. But he's wrong. He's crippled. Weak. He doesn't deserve her."

His eyes burned with obsession.

> Don: "I'll take her back. One way or another."

At the Academy: The Rivalry Deepens

The next day, Liu walked into the academy with her usual calm confidence. Nari joined her, chattering about assignments and gossip. But the moment they entered the lecture hall, the atmosphere shifted.

Mika sat at the front, her fan girls clustered around her like a court. She turned, her eyes locking on Liu, her smile sharp.

> Mika (loudly): "Some people think one lucky win makes them the best. But real talent is proven over time."

Her entourage laughed. Liu ignored her, sliding into her seat beside Nari.

> Nari (whispering): "She's obsessed with you."

> Liu (calmly): "Good. Obsession makes people sloppy."

The lecture began, but Mika's gaze never left Liu. Every word, every gesture, was a challenge.

The Principal's Watch

Later that afternoon, Liu was summoned again to the principal's office. She entered cautiously, bowing slightly. Professor Takeda stood nearby, arms crossed, his eyes sharp.

The principal gestured for her to sit.

> Principal: "Your performance continues to impress. But you've made enemies."

> Liu (calmly): "I expected that."

> Principal: "Mika won't stop. She'll push harder. She'll try to break you."

Takeda stepped forward.

> Takeda: "She's dangerous. But so are you."

Liu tilted her head, curious.

> Liu: "Is that a warning?"

> Takeda (smiling faintly): "It's a reminder. Don't underestimate her."

Liu nodded, her resolve firm.

> Liu: "I won't."

The Challenge

That evening, Mika confronted Liu in the courtyard, her fan girls flanking her.

> Mika: "You think you're better than me? Then prove it. Tomorrow. Surgical competition. No excuses."

Liu smiled, her eyes gleaming.

> Liu: "Finally. A bone worth chewing."

Nari gasped, tugging at Liu's sleeve.

> Nari: "Are you serious? She's setting you up!"

> Liu (calmly): "Let her. I'll win anyway."

Mika's smile faltered, just for a moment. Then she turned, her entourage trailing behind her.

The Estate: Xia's Possession

That night, Liu returned home, exhausted but determined. She entered the dining hall, where Xia sat alone, sipping wine. He looked up as she approached.

> Xia: "You've been busy."

> Liu (smiling faintly): "Always."

He gestured for her to sit. She did, pouring herself tea. He watched her, his gaze steady, his expression unreadable.

> Xia: "Mika challenged you."

She blinked, surprised.

> Liu: "You… heard?"

> Xia (smiling faintly): "I hear everything."

She blushed, sipping her tea.

> Liu: "It's nothing."

> Xia: "It's war."

Her cheeks warmed. She looked away, hiding her smile.

The Quiet Bond

Later, Liu found herself in Xia's room again. She hadn't planned it. She told herself it was just to check on him, to ask about his day. But when she entered, he was already waiting, his gaze soft.

> Xia: "You keep coming back."

> Liu (teasing): "Maybe I like annoying you."

> Xia: "Maybe you like me."

Her face burned. She turned away, pouting.

> Liu: "You're insufferable."

He chuckled, reaching for her hand. She hesitated, then let him hold it. His grip was firm, warm, grounding.

For a moment, the world was quiet.

No academy. No rivals. No Don.

Just them.

Cliffhanger Ending

But outside the estate, in the shadows of the city, Don watched from a distance. His eyes burned, his fists clenched.

He saw Liu's silhouette in Xia's window. He saw her laughter. Her smile.

And something inside him snapped.

> Don (to himself): "If I can't have her… no one will."
