CHAPTER 33: THE CALM BEFORE

First week of December brings artificial peace.
Finals stress overrides dojo war temporarily. Everyone too focused on grades to maintain active hostility.
But it's false calm. Pressure valve temporarily closed while steam continues building underneath.
I organize study group at the library. Neutral ground. Shared AP classes creating temporary unity.
Sam, Miguel, Demetri, and surprisingly, Hawk show up.
For three hours, we're just teenagers helping each other with calculus and literature.
The normalcy is almost painful in its fragility.
Hawk helps Demetri with a chemistry problem. They laugh about old inside jokes. Glimpse of friendship that used to exist.
Miguel and Sam have pleasant conversation about college applications. No tension. No accusations.
"This is what they could be. If the adults hadn't poisoned everything."
I watch these moments with hope and heartbreak. Knowing it's temporary but grateful for respite.
[EXAM WEEK: TEMPORARY DE-ESCALATION]

After study session, Johnny pulls me aside during evening training.
"You've been distracted. Whatever you're worried about, talk to me."
I want to explain. About the school fight. About knowing something terrible is coming. But can't without revealing impossibilities.
"I have a bad feeling. Like everything's building toward something violent. And I won't be able to stop it."
Johnny's response is sobering. "Then don't try to stop it. Survive it. Protect who you can. Deal with aftermath." He pauses. "You can't save everyone, kid."
It's permission to accept limits. But I can't let go of responsibility that foreknowledge creates.
"I have to try."
"I know. That's why you're going to get hurt." He grips my shoulder. "Just make sure you survive it."

Walking to my car after training, Tory intercepts me. Deliberate. Calculated.
"I know you're trying to protect her. Sam. Your precious girlfriend."
"What do you want, Tory?"
"Just letting you know—you can't be everywhere at once. Eventually, she's going to face consequences for her privilege."
The threat is explicit. My response careful.
"What consequences? For what crime? Existing while having money?"
"For taking everything for granted while people like me work three jobs to survive. For thinking she's better than everyone else."
"She doesn't think that. You're projecting your pain onto someone who isn't your enemy."
Tory's smile is cruel. Sharp. "We'll see."
She walks away. Leaving threat hanging in cold December air.

Finals complete by Friday. Winter break approaching. Students exhale collectively.
But I can't relax. The false peace is ending. Pressure releasing.
Something will trigger the explosion I've been dreading.
I spend every free moment training. Defensive positioning. Crowd control tactics. How to pull someone back from a railing.
The System's countdown is gone. Replaced with simple status:
[ALERT: CRITICAL CONDITIONS MET]
[MAJOR VIOLENT INCIDENT: IMMINENT]
Saturday night, I can't sleep. Train in my apartment until 2 AM. Pushups until arms shake. Kata until movements are automatic.
Sam texts: "Can't sleep either. Worried about something?"
"Just restless. Finals stress."
"Liar. But I love you anyway."
"Love you too."
I stare at my phone. Wanting to warn her. To tell her to stay home Monday. To avoid school until whatever's coming passes.
But I can't explain without revealing everything.
So I train. And prepare. And hope six months of work will be enough.
