Chapter 96 - Awakening Threads

The castle had settled into silence behind me, but I could feel something shifting beneath the floors, inside the walls. It was subtle at first—a vibration, like a heartbeat doubled and halved at once. I froze, hand brushing the stone, listening.

…You feel it too, a voice murmured, soft, deliberate.

I swallowed. My lips did not move. The city? I thought. Is this part of the city?

Perhaps, the voice replied, calm, amused even. Perhaps it is. Or perhaps it is… me.

I didn't answer. I didn't need to. The voice wasn't a sound—it was a pull, a thread of presence inside my skull, curling around my mind like silver smoke. It felt familiar, yet alien. Somewhere between comfort and command.

I lifted my hand instinctively, and the silver water in the cracks of the hall responded immediately. It swirled upward, twisting around my fingers, bending to my thought before I even knew what I thought. My pulse quickened—not from surprise, but from recognition. I could feel its guidance, subtle but unmistakable, threading itself through my nerves.

Do you see now? the voice asked, a whisper curling around the edges of my awareness. This is your path. This is how you shape them, how you move through what you are.

I nodded slowly. Not aloud. I didn't trust myself to speak yet. The presence pulsed again, stronger now, like a heartbeat superimposed over my own. I realized it was waiting for me to test it—to understand that this was not an enemy, not a threat, but something that existed for me, with me.

You can do more than move them, it said. You can guide, weave, form. The city bends, yes—but you bend with it. You shape it.

I flexed my fingers. The silver water obeyed instantly, curling higher, forming threads that stretched along the stone like living veins. A thrill ran through me—a dangerous, cold, exalting thrill.

Patience, the voice murmured. There is much to learn. Soon, you will know more than the city itself.

I took a step forward, feeling the pulse beneath my boots, the threads responding, growing, stretching. I understood, vaguely, that the city, the water, and this presence—the system—were separate, yet all woven into me now.

Do not fear me, the voice said, almost gently. I am not yours. Nor am I against you. I am… a part of what you will become.

I swallowed, gripping the crown heavier on my head. Power thrummed through me, cold and lucid, and I realized: I was no longer simply the city's heir. I was something else. Something vast. Something waiting.

And the voice—the system—was waking.
