The dust hadn't yet settled from Sonic's confrontation with Shadow when Amy stood alone by the cliff's edge, the cool wind tugging at her quills like the breath of fate itself. Below her, the city shimmered under a twilight sky, a kaleidoscope of fading gold and rising indigo. Her thoughts, however, were far from the beautiful skyline.
[What am I supposed to do now?]
Shadow hadn't spoken to her since the confrontation. Not that she blamed him—Sonic's words had cut deep, not only into Shadow but into her as well. The implication that she had become some kind of prize to be won had struck a nerve she didn't know was raw.
Behind her, the faintest shuffle of footsteps on gravel broke her solitude.
"You always find the highest places to think."
She turned, her heart fluttering as she met Shadow's gaze. He looked… tired. But there was something else in his eyes—a vulnerability she hadn't seen before.
"It helps me feel grounded," she replied softly. "Funny, right?"
Shadow walked up beside her, standing just close enough that their shoulders nearly touched. The silence between them stretched, but it wasn't uncomfortable.
"You didn't deserve that," he said, finally. "What Sonic said."
Amy sighed. "He was angry. And scared. I don't think he ever really thought I'd stop chasing him."
"And have you?"
She didn't answer right away. Instead, she stepped forward, letting the wind whip around her.
"I stopped a long time ago," she admitted. "But it's like… everyone else didn't notice. They still saw me as the girl who followed him everywhere."
Shadow nodded, his eyes cast toward the horizon.
"I noticed."
Amy glanced at him, surprised. He continued.
"You were changing. Quietly. Becoming stronger, more independent. You didn't need to be in someone's shadow to shine."
[He noticed…]
She blinked back the sudden sting behind her eyes.
"Thank you."
Their moment was short-lived. A sharp beep sounded from Shadow's wrist communicator. He checked it, his brow furrowing.
"Rouge just intercepted a transmission from Eggman. He's moving."
Amy's heart skipped. "Do we know where?"
"Not exactly, but he's searching for a Chaos Emerald. And we think it's near Mystic Ruins."
Amy straightened. "Then we have to get there first."
---
The journey to Mystic Ruins was swift, the treetops a green blur beneath the Tornado's wings. Tails piloted the plane with expert control, while Amy, Shadow, and Rouge sat in silence, each lost in their thoughts.
"He's growing desperate," Rouge said at last. "Eggman wouldn't risk sending open transmissions unless he was on a deadline."
"Or unless he's baiting us," Shadow added grimly.
Amy looked out at the thick jungle approaching in the distance. Her hand instinctively went to the hammer strapped to her back.
[Whatever his plan is, we can't let him get that Emerald.]
---
The ruins were quiet—eerily so. Jungle vines had overtaken the crumbling stone structures, and the air was thick with humidity and tension. Amy led the way, her instincts humming like a second heartbeat.
As they moved deeper into the ruins, the silence fractured. A faint humming—a vibration through the stone beneath their feet—grew stronger.
"It's the Emerald," Shadow said. "It's close."
Rouge crouched near a cracked column, brushing dirt aside to reveal a glowing symbol. "This wasn't here before. Eggman must've activated something."
Suddenly, the ground shook violently. A section of the ruin crumbled, revealing a staircase leading underground.
Amy didn't hesitate. She darted forward, hammer at the ready. Shadow followed instantly, Rouge behind them.
The air grew cooler as they descended, the walls etched with Chaos symbols and forgotten warnings. At the bottom was a massive chamber, lit by a glowing green light.
There, floating above a pedestal, was the Chaos Emerald.
And standing in front of it…
"Metal Sonic," Shadow growled.
The robotic doppelgänger whirred to life, eyes glowing a menacing red.
"You shall not interfere," it said in a voice cold and mechanical.
Amy stepped forward, hammer clenched tightly.
"We're not leaving without that Emerald."
Metal Sonic lunged.
What followed was chaos.
Amy swung her hammer, each strike guided by instinct and training. Shadow danced through the fight with his trademark speed and precision, while Rouge provided support from above, distracting the machine with divebombs and kicks.
But Metal Sonic was stronger than expected.
A blow sent Amy flying into the wall, her hammer skidding out of reach. Dazed, she looked up in time to see Metal Sonic charging toward Shadow, who was still recovering from a blast to the chest.
"Shadow!"
Something inside her snapped.
A pulse.
It surged from her chest like an explosion. The room trembled. The emerald responded, glowing brighter as if recognizing her.
Pink energy burst from Amy's body, surrounding her in a luminous aura. Her eyes widened—no, they glowed.
Her hand rose, and with a motion of sheer will, her hammer flew back to her grasp, wrapped in swirling pink energy.
Shadow looked up, shocked.
"Amy…?"
She stepped forward, each movement light as air, her body radiating raw Chaos energy.
With a single swing, she sent Metal Sonic flying across the chamber. The robot crashed into the far wall, circuits sparking violently.
Silence followed.
Amy stood in the middle of the room, breathless, the energy slowly fading from her body.
[What… was that?]
Rouge landed beside her. "That… was new."
Shadow approached slowly, eyes narrowed but not with suspicion—with awe.
"You channeled the Chaos Emerald. Without even touching it."
Amy lowered her hammer, confusion still written across her face.
"I didn't know I could."
"You can," Shadow said quietly. "And now… Eggman will know too."
---
Above ground, a pair of red mechanical eyes narrowed as they watched from a hidden screen.
Eggman stroked his mustache thoughtfully.
"Well now," he mused. "The girl's full of surprises."
He turned to the shadows behind him, where new constructs of war awaited.
"Time to adjust the plan."
The screen flickered, showing the glowing Chaos Emerald once more… and the girl who had awakened something even she didn't understand.
