Chapter 10 - 10. Fractured Bonds

---

The evening air was heavy with silence, broken only by the faint hum of insects and the distant calls of the forest. Central City lay beyond the horizon, its lights faint and flickering, but here-at the quiet edge of the wilderness-the weight of what had transpired earlier still lingered.

Amy Rose stood near the riverbank, her reflection rippling across the moonlit water. She held her hands close to her chest, trying to steady the uneven rhythm of her breathing. So much had happened in so little time. Eggman's ambush. The sudden violence. Shadow's intervention. The flicker of strange energy pulsing from within her-power she could neither understand nor fully control.

And then there was Sonic.

The way his expression had shifted when he saw her with Shadow. The sharpness in his tone. The disbelief in his eyes, as if she had crossed a line she hadn't even known was there.

Behind her, the underbrush rustled. She didn't need to turn to know who it was.

"Amy."

His voice was low, edged with a seriousness she rarely heard from him. Sonic the Hedgehog-always so carefree, so unshakable-now sounded almost brittle.

She turned slowly. Sonic stood there, arms crossed, his quills catching the moonlight. His green eyes bore into her, but beneath the sharpness there was something else. Something raw.

"You've been spending a lot of time with him." The word him dripped from Sonic's mouth like poison.

Amy swallowed. "Sonic, it's not what you think."

"Oh, really?" He stepped forward, the grass crunching under his sneakers. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you've chosen to put your trust in Shadow-of all people. You know who he is. You know what he's done. And yet-" His jaw tightened. "You run to him."

Her heart clenched. She had always admired Sonic. Always wanted to be by his side. But lately, his words cut deeper than she expected.

"Shadow's not the enemy," Amy said firmly. "He's saved me more times than I can count. When Eggman attacked, when I felt powerless, he was there. He believed in me-even when I didn't."

Sonic's eyes narrowed. "So now I'm the bad guy for worrying about you?"

"That's not what I said."

"It's what you meant." He stepped closer, his voice rising. "I've been there for you too, Amy! I've fought Eggman more times than Shadow ever dreamed of. I've kept this world safe. And yet somehow, he swoops in, brooding and mysterious, and suddenly you think he understands you better than I do?"

Amy flinched. The accusation stung, not because it was harsh, but because it revealed something deeper-an insecurity she had never thought Sonic would admit.

"This isn't about who's done more," she whispered. "This is about trust. About being seen for who I am. Shadow doesn't look at me like I'm someone who needs protecting. He... he looks at me like I can fight my own battles."

Sonic's silence was deafening. His fists clenched at his sides, trembling with restrained emotion.

Finally, he spoke, his voice quieter but no less sharp. "Do you... care about him?"

Amy froze. The question hung in the air, heavier than any weapon Eggman could build. She opened her mouth, but the words tangled in her throat. Did she care about Shadow? Yes. But how? As a friend? As something more? Even she didn't know yet.

Sonic's expression hardened at her hesitation. "That's all I needed to hear."

Her eyes widened. "Sonic, wait-"

But he was already turning away, his figure a blur of blue against the moonlit grass. "If you want him, then fine. Don't expect me to stand around and watch."

His voice cracked at the last word before he vanished into the night, leaving only the wind and the faint echo of his departure.

---

Shadow emerged from the trees not long after, silent as always. His crimson eyes flicked from the direction Sonic had gone to Amy, who stood trembling at the water's edge.

"You heard all of that, didn't you?" she asked bitterly.

He didn't deny it. "He's jealous."

Amy let out a shaky laugh. "That's one way to put it."

Shadow approached her, his movements steady, controlled, but there was something gentler in the way he stopped at her side. "He doesn't understand," Shadow said. "You're changing. There's power inside you-power he's never seen before. Fear makes people act irrational."

"Fear?" Amy shook her head. "No. That wasn't fear. That was..." She trailed off, clutching her chest. "That was Sonic showing me a side I didn't want to see."

Shadow's gaze lingered on her, unwavering. "And now you have to decide which side you're on."

The words struck like a blade. She didn't want to choose. She didn't want to fracture the bond that had held them together for so long. But the look in Sonic's eyes-the anger, the betrayal-wasn't something she could easily forget.

Her hands tightened into fists. "I don't want there to be sides. I just want us to fight together."

Shadow's expression softened, if only slightly. "The world doesn't work that way. Sooner or later, you'll have to decide who you can rely on."

Amy stared into the river, her reflection rippling. For the first time, she wasn't sure where her heart belonged.

---

Meanwhile, Sonic tore through the forest at blistering speed, his thoughts a storm he couldn't outrun. Every tree, every rock blurred into insignificance compared to the image burned into his mind: Amy standing beside Shadow, her eyes alight with trust. Trust that used to be his.

Why him?

He skidded to a halt on a cliffside, the city sprawled out below. His chest heaved, not from exhaustion, but from the weight pressing down on him. He had always been the hero, the one who people looked up to. But for the first time, he wondered if that wasn't enough.

A bitter laugh escaped him. "Guess I was too slow after all."

The night offered no answers. Only the hollow ache of jealousy, gnawing deeper with every passing second.

And somewhere in the shadows, Eggman's laughter echoed faintly, carried on the wind. Watching. Waiting. And smiling at the cracks forming in his enemies' bond.
