Chapter 136 - The Ping-Strike

The Neon-District was drowning in "Green-Code." The skyscrapers, once vibrant with the chaotic graffiti of a thousand "Unranked" hackers, were being overwritten by sterile, green grids. People were being turned into "Compressed Files" static, grey cubes that vibrated with a trapped, silent scream.

[LOCATION: THE NEON-DISTRICT (SECTOR-ZERO-B)]

[STATUS: ARCHIVING_IN_PROGRESS]

[LATENCY: 3,250ms (CRITICAL)]

Remote-Kenji stepped off the Archive's ramp and immediately stumbled. To his perspective, he was still standing on the ship, but his "Avatar" was already ten feet ahead, walking into a wall.

"Dammit," Kenji's voice echoed with a digital stutter. "The 'Ping' is worse inside the green-code. I'm seeing the world three seconds late. Mateo, I need a 'Predictive-Buffer'!"

"I'm trying, Kenji!" Mateo yelled from the ship's terminal. "I'm using the Soul-Link to 'Guess' your movements and render them ahead of time, but the 'Cleanup-Script' is a 'Low-Level' process. It doesn't guess. It just is."

[THREAT IDENTIFIED: THE CLEANUP_BOT (v12.4)]

[ACTION: OPTIMIZING_REDUNDANT_ASSETS]

A "Cleanup-Bot" manifested. It looked like a giant, floating vacuum cleaner made of green laser-grids. It surged toward a group of terrified children who were halfway through being "Zipped" into cubes.

Kenji swung his Independent Variable or rather, he thought about swinging it.

The Bot moved to the left. Three seconds later, Kenji's avatar swung at empty air.

"I can't hit it!" Kenji roared, his pixelated form flickering with frustration. "I'm fighting a ghost of the past!"

[NOTICE: AVATAR-INTEGRITY DROPPING TO 64%]

[REASON: SYNCHRONIZATION_ERROR]

"Kenji, stop trying to react!" Elara shouted, freezing a wave of green-code with a blast of frost-mana. "You're the 'Core' now! You don't 'React' to the world you 'Define' it! Stop playing the 'Game' and start 'Programming' the encounter!"

Kenji froze. He closed his pixelated eyes. He stopped looking at the "Stream" coming to his avatar. Instead, he reached back through the "Tether" to his true self at the center of the nebula.

I am the Engine, he thought. The Engine doesn't wait for the piston. The Engine moves the piston.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE LAG-COMPENSATION]

Kenji stopped trying to hit the Bot. Instead, he began to swing his wrench at where the Bot would be in six seconds. He turned his combat into a "Macro" a pre-recorded sequence of movements that didn't care about what the enemy was doing now.

He became a "Rhythm."

One-two-three... Strike. One-two-three... Dodge.

The Cleanup-Bot hissed, its green lasers firing at Kenji's "Previous Position." But Kenji wasn't there. He was already "Buffered" into his next move. To the people in the Neon-District, Kenji looked like a blurring, stuttering ghost, appearing in three places at once.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE PING-STRIKE]

Kenji's wrench finally connected. Because he had "Buffered" the impact, the force didn't just come from his avatar—it came directly from the "Core." The wrench hit with the weight of a trillion suns, compressed into a single, pixelated point.

KABOOM.

The Cleanup-Bot didn't just break; its "Source-Code" was shattered. The green grids across the city turned purple and then dissolved, releasing the "Compressed" citizens.

"He's doing it," Priya whispered, her diagnostic spells showing the "Archive-Progress" reversing. "He's 'Pre-calculating' the victory!"

But the "Cleanup-Script" wasn't a single bot. It was a "Distributed Network." Every streetlight, every vending machine, and every "Unranked" citizen's cybernetics began to glow with that sickly green light.

"ASSET_RECOVERY_FAILED," a million voices spoke in unison. "INITIATING_FACTORY_RESET."

"It's going for a 'Nuke'!" Mateo screamed. "It's going to 'Reset' the entire sector to 'Empty_Space'!"

Remote-Kenji looked at his flickering hands. He couldn't "Pre-calculate" an entire world's reset. He needed to "Lag" the entire system.

"Mateo! Elara! Everyone! Give me every 'Garbage-File' you've got!" Kenji commanded. "We're going to 'DDoS' the reality of this sector!"

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE DISTRIBUTED_DENIAL_OF_EXISTENCE]

Kenji didn't use power. He used "Useless Information." He flooded the Neon-District's "Local-Drive" with every bad joke, every misspelled word, and every "Low-Res" meme from the Gutter. He filled the "Buffer" of the reality-engine until it couldn't find the "Factory Reset" command in the pile of junk.

The green light flickered... then turned grey... and then "Crashed."

[NOTICE: SECTOR_ZERO_B HAS ENCOUNTERED A 'FATAL_LOGIC_ERROR']

[CLEANUP_SCRIPT: TERMINATED]

The world went silent. The green grids were gone. The Neon-District was back, messy and "Un-optimized," just the way they liked it.

Remote-Kenji slumped against a neon sign, his avatar nearly transparent. "That... was... a lot of 'Packet-Loss'..."

"You did it, Kenji," Elara said, helping his ghost-body stand. "But you're 'De-syncing.' You need to go back to the Core."

"I know," Kenji said, looking at the people he had saved. They were looking at his flickering form with awe. He wasn't their boss; he was their "Guardian-Process." "But tell them... tell them the 'Unranked' don't have a 'Reset' button. We only have a 'Continue' button."

[AVATAR DISCONNECTING...]

[STATUS: KENJI RETURNING TO CORE]
