Chapter 157 - The Power Vacuum

The "Great Equilibrium" had silenced the alarms, but the silence was loud. Across the billions of sectors, the "Interface" in everyone's mind was blank. No Rank 99 status. No "Debt-Slave" markers. Just a blinking cursor and the "Manuals" Kenji had open-sourced.

[LOCATION: THE SOURCE-STRATA (THE WORKBENCH)]

[STATUS: SYSTEM_STABILITY: 88%]

[WARNING: 'SOCIO-POLITICAL_DRIFT' DETECTED]

"Kenji, we have a problem," Mateo said, landing a small hover-skiff near the Workbench. "It's not the gears. It's the... users. The 'Former Gilded' have formed a committee. They're calling themselves the 'Legacy-Holders.' They want to know when their 'Priority-Support' will be restored. And the 'Gutter-Lords'? They're already carving up the sectors into new territories. They're using the 'Repair-Tools' you gave them to build walls."

Kenji didn't look up from his wrench. He was using a piece of sandpaper to smooth out a nick in the iron. "Walls are just 'Physics-Variables,' Mateo. If they want to build them, they have to 'Code' the maintenance for them. Do they know how much energy a wall costs to keep from 'De-rezzing'?"

"They don't care about the energy!" Mateo shouted. "They care about the 'Number'! People are starting to invent new ranks, Kenji. 'Alpha-Fixers.' 'Master-Coders.' They're desperate for a hierarchy."

[EVENT: THE FIRST_PETITION]

A massive holographic transmission flared to life in the center of the Strata. It wasn't an attack; it was a "Collective-Query" from ten thousand sectors.

"LEAD MECHANIC KENJI TANAKA: WE REQUIRE A JUDGE. WE REQUIRE A LAW. WE REQUIRE A KING."

"They're terrified," Priya whispered, standing by the command pillar. "They spent eons being told what they were worth by a machine. Now that they have to decide for themselves, they'd rather just give that power back to you. They want you to be the 'Grand Administrator'."

[PROMPT: ACCEDE TO 'KING' STATUS? (Y/N)]

[NOTICE: 99.9% OF USERS WILL COMPLY WITH YOUR DIRECTIVES]

Kenji looked at the prompt. It was the ultimate trap. If he said yes, he could fix every injustice with a thought. He could feed every child, heal every wound, and force everyone to be "Good." He would be the most powerful being in history—a Celestial God in the skin of a man.

He stood up, his human muscles aching, his breath visible in the cool air of the core. He walked over to the "Global Variable" console.

"I spent my whole life being 'Ranked' by someone else's math," Kenji spoke, his voice broadcasted to the trillions of souls waiting for a command. "And I fought the Archive because it stole our 'Agency.' If I become your King, I'm just the Archive with a pulse."

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE ROOT_LOCKOUT]

Kenji didn't just say "No." He took his Independent Variable and slammed it into the 'Throne-Protocol'.

"I'm deleting the 'Admin-Role'," Kenji roared. "I'm not your Judge. I'm not your Law. And I am definitely not your King. I am the Mechanic, and my shift is almost over."

[NOTICE: 'ADMIN_PRIVILEGES' DISPERSED ACROSS ALL 14,000,000,000 NODES]

[STATUS: THE 'CROWN' HAS BEEN DE-COMPILED]

The holographic prompt shattered into a billion tiny "Instruction-Packets." Each packet landed in the hands of a different citizen.

"You want a Law?" Kenji's human face was stern, projected across the sky. "The Law is 'Maintenance'. If you don't fix it, it stays broken. If you don't share the 'Code,' your sector 'Crashes.' You aren't 'Ranked' anymore... you're just 'Responsible'."

[NOTICE: 'DEPENDENCY_WAR' AVERTED]

[RESULT: THE POWER_VACUUM IS NOW 'DISTRIBUTED_COMPUTING']

The "Legacy-Holders" and the "Gutter-Lords" suddenly found that their "Power" was tied to their "Work." If they tried to build a wall, they had to manually calculate the structural integrity and the power-draw. Without "Priority-Support," they were just people with heavy rocks.

"You really did it," Elara said, appearing from the shadows of the machinery. Her ice-eyes were softer now. "You gave them the one thing they didn't want: Accountability."

"It's the only way we stay human," Kenji said, sitting back down on his wooden bench. He looked at his hands. The glow of the "Celestial" form was almost entirely gone, replaced by the dull, honest skin of a man who has worked a double-shift.

[STATUS: THE 'GRAND_REPAIR' IS NOW 'PEER-TO-PEER']

[NEW THREAT DETECTED: THE LEGACY_VIRUS]

"Kenji," Mateo's voice turned cold. "The Archive... it didn't just 'Die.' It left a 'Root-Kit' in the minds of the people who loved being 'Ranked.' There's a cult forming. They're trying to 'Re-compile' the Archive using their own souls as the code."

Kenji sighed and picked up his wrench. "A virus, huh? I guess there's no such thing as a 'Final' fix."
