Chapter 163 - The Shadow-Rank

The physical walls were down, and the "Difference-Engine" was humming, but a new kind of "Coldness" had settled over the trade-hubs of the Mid-Rim. It wasn't a glitch in the temperature-control; it was a glitch in the 'Trust-Protocol'.

[LOCATION: THE HUB-MARKET (SECTOR 45)]

[STATUS: HIDDEN_HEIRARCHY DETECTED]

[NOTICE: 'SOCIAL_CURRENCY' TRADING AT HIGH_VOLUME]

"Kenji, look at their eyes," Mateo whispered. They were walking through the crowded market, Kenji keeping his hood up to hide his famous, soot-stained face. "They aren't looking at the goods. They're looking at each other's 'Invisible Numbers'."

In the center of the market, a former Rank-99 noble was being served a rare synthetic fruit by a group of former laborers. There was no "Law" forcing them to do it. There was no "Debt-Clock" ticking in their heads.

"Why are they bowing?" Kenji growled, his hand tightening on the Independent Variable hidden beneath his parka. "I deleted the 'Admin-Code' for those bows."

[THREAT IDENTIFIED: THE SHADOW_LEDGER]

Priya held up a modified scanner. "It's not in the 'Source-Code,' Kenji. It's an 'App.' A decentralized 'Shadow-Rank' ledger. People are 'Rating' each other in real-time. If you have a high 'Legacy-Score' from the old days, you get 'Preferred-Access' to the new tools. If you were 'Gutter-Born,' your 'Rating' is capped at 'Common'."

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE PSYCHOLOGICAL_AUDIT]

A man in a sharp, reconstructed suit stepped in front of Kenji. He wasn't a soldier; he was an "Evaluator." He held a small, crystalline lens to his eye, scanning Kenji's "Social-Presence."

"Unidentified. Low-Texture. Dirty. Estimated Value: 0.1," the Evaluator sneered. "Please move to the 'Low-Frequency' lane, citizen. You are 'Stuttering' the elegance of this sector."

[NOTICE: 'SOCIAL_PRESSURE' APPLIED]

[STATUS: KENJI'S 'PRESENCE' IS BEING 'THROTTLED' BY COLLECTIVE_CONSENT]

Kenji felt a strange, ghostly weight on his shoulders. It wasn't the "Mass" of the Gravity Governor; it was the 'Weight of Opinion'. Because everyone in the market "Agreed" that Kenji was worthless, the local reality was actually starting to dim around him.

"You really miss the 'Machine,' don't you?" Kenji said, his voice low and dangerous. He pulled back his hood, revealing the circuit-scars on his face and the raw, human exhaustion in his eyes.

The Evaluator's lens cracked. "The... the Mechanic?"

"I gave you the 'Tools' to be 'One'," Kenji stepped forward, his human boots cracking the "Elegant" tile floor. "But you're so terrified of being 'Equal' that you've built a 'Ghost-Archive' out of your own spite. You're 'Ranking' yourselves back into a cage!"

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE REPUTATION_BURN]

Kenji didn't use a "Delete" command. He used 'Truth'. He reached into the "Source-Strata" and pulled the "Actual-Logs" of the people standing in the market—the raw, un-edited history of their work, their kindness, and their failures.

He projected it for everyone to see. The "High-Legacy" noble was shown as a man who had never turned a wrench in his life. The "Low-Rank" laborer was shown as the one who had spent forty hours straight keeping the oxygen-scrubbers running during the Grand Repair.

"You want a 'Rank'?" Kenji roared, the violet light of his human-core flashing. "Here is the only 'Score' that matters: 'What Have You Fixed Today?'"

[NOTICE: 'SHADOW_LEDGER' OVERWRITTEN BY 'CONTRIBUTION_DATA']

[STATUS: SOCIAL_CURRENCY CRASHING]

The "Preferred-Access" vanished. The "Elegance" of the sector was revealed to be a thin holographic veneer over a crumbling infrastructure. The Evaluator stumbled back, his "Social-Power" evaporating.

"You can't stop it, Kenji!" the noble shouted, his face turning red. "People want to be better than someone else! It's in the 'Human-Hardware'!"

"Then we'll 'Patch' the hardware every damn day," Kenji said, picking up his wrench. "Until 'Better' means 'More Helpful' instead of 'More Important'."

[NOTICE: 'SHADOW-RANK' QUARANTINED]

[STATUS: THE 'GRAND_REPAIR' PHASE FIVE: INTEGRITY]

Kenji walked out of the market, his heart heavy. He had won the "System War," but the "Cultural War" was going to take the rest of his life.

"They're going to keep trying, aren't they?" Priya asked, walking beside him.

"Yeah," Kenji said, looking at the scarred palms of his hands. "But as long as I've got a wrench and a voice, I'm going to keep 'De-fragging' their ego."
