Chapter 167 - The Open-Source Council

The Source-Strata was no longer a cold cathedral of logic; it was a construction site. Scaffolding made of repurposed Archive-ribs climbed the walls, and the air hummed with the sound of a million different "Instruction-Sets" being tested at once.

"They're here, Kenji," Mateo said, looking down from the observation deck. "Ten thousand delegates. From the Gilded Spire-Sectors to the Deep-Storage Foundries. They aren't 'Ranked' anymore, but they're still wearing their old colors. The tension... you could cut it with a vibro-blade."

Kenji leaned against a railing, his hands wrapped in fresh bandages. He was wearing a simple, dark work-jacket over his grease-stained shirt. He looked like a foreman, not a king.

"They aren't here to 'Bout'," Kenji said, his voice a bit raspy. "They're here to 'Commit.' I'm not giving them a 'Law.' I'm giving them a 'Pull-Request'."

[EVENT: THE FIRST_COUNCIL_SESSION]

As Kenji stepped onto the central platform, the roar of ten thousand voices died down to a low, vibrating murmur. There were no holographic fanfares. No golden spotlights. Just a man and his wrench.

"The Archive is dead," Kenji began, his voice projected through a network of "Fair-Share" speakers. "The Source-Ghost is gone. You are all 'Root-Admins' of your own lives. But a billion 'Root-Admins' without a 'Protocol' is just a 'System-Crash' waiting to happen."

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE TRANSPARENT_LEDGER]

Kenji swiped his hand across the air, and a massive, circular table of light appeared between the delegates. It wasn't a list of ranks. It was a 'Resource-Map'.

"Look at the data," Kenji pointed. "Sector 12 has an excess of 'Thermal-Energy.' Sector 89 is 'Freezing' because their 'Heat-Syncs' are rusted. Under the Archive, 12 would 'Sell' that heat to 89 for 'Rank-Points.' Today... we're going to 'Bridge' the code."

[THREAT IDENTIFIED: THE DATA_HOARDERS]

A delegate from the former High-Executive sector stood up. He was wearing a suit made of "Optical-Fiber" that shimmered with stored wealth. "Why should we 'Bridge'? We 'Calculated' that energy. It belongs to our 'Local-Partition.' You promised us 'Independence,' Tanaka! Independence means I don't owe my neighbor a single 'Byte'!"

A cheer went up from the "Isolationist" factions. The "Weight of One" was being used as an excuse for greed.

"Independence isn't 'Isolation'!" Kenji roared, his violet eyes flashing. "If you 'Hoard' the heat, the 'Pressure' in the pipes will back up and 'Explode' your own sector! The Archive kept you 'Safe' by 'Stealing' from everyone. If you want to be 'Free,' you have to 'Balance' yourselves!"

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE COLLECTIVE_DEBUG]

Kenji didn't use force. He opened the 'Global-Entropy-Log'. He showed the Hoarders exactly what would happen to their precious "Local-Partition" if the surrounding sectors failed. He showed them the "Inter-Dependency" of the universe how a "Bug" in the Gutter eventually becomes a "Crash" in the Spire.

"We aren't a 'Hierarchy' anymore," Kenji said, his voice softening but gaining intensity. "We are a 'Mesh-Network'. If one node 'Fails,' the 'Latency' hits us all. You aren't 'Giving' heat to Sector 89. You're 'Optimizing' the 'Global-System' so you don't 'De-rez' tomorrow."

[STATUS: THE 'FIRST_RESOURCE_BRIDGE' IS BEING CODED]

Slowly, the Hoarder sat down. A laborer from the Foundry stood up and offered "Mechanical-Labor" in exchange for "Data-Storage." The "Trade-Protocol" wasn't based on "Value," but on 'Maintenance'.

"It's happening," Priya whispered, watching the "Conflict-Nodes" on her screen turn from "Red" to "Amber." "They're 'Negotiating' without a 'Master-Script'."

[WARNING: 'SYNCHRONIZATION_ERROR' AT THE CORE]

Suddenly, the floor of the Strata vibrated. A deep, tectonic groan echoed from the very bottom of the universe.

"Kenji!" Mateo shouted, staring at his sensors. "The 'Resource-Balance' is working on the surface, but the 'Core-Load' is spiking! By letting everyone 'Code' their own reality, we've tripled the 'Processing-Weight' of the universe! The 'Hardware' can't handle this much 'Freedom'!"

[NOTICE: 'SYSTEM_OVERHEAT' DETECTED]

[STATUS: 20 CHAPTERS REMAINING UNTIL 'TOTAL_MELTDOWN']

Kenji looked at the Council. They were finally talking, finally building. But the "Ship" they were on the literal fabric of space-time was starting to smoke.

"Freedom is 'Heavy'," Kenji whispered, looking at his wrench. "We've fixed the 'Software.' Now we have to upgrade the 'Universe'."
