Chapter 53: emotions

The silence stretched between them, heavy and electric, as if the world itself had paused to hold its breath.

Then, as if pulled by the same invisible thread, both Varion and Milim took a single step forward at exactly the same moment.

They collided gently in the middle.

Varion's arms wrapped around her smaller frame on instinct, pulling her close, while Milim's arms came up to clutch at his back with surprising strength. The moment their bodies met, something deep inside both of them shattered.

A broken sob tore from Varion's throat as he buried his face in her pink hair. Tears flowed freely now, years of composure finally giving way. For the first time since Veldanava died, he didn't have to be the strong one. He didn't have to protect the kids, the guild, or anyone else. He could simply be a son who had lost his father and finally found the only family he had left.

Milim's body trembled violently against him. Tears spilled down her cheeks as centuries of suppressed grief surged to the surface like a dam breaking. The loss of her father, her mother, her beloved little Gaia — all of it crashed into the sudden, overwhelming joy of finding someone who carried the same blood, the same soul signature. In that first instant of contact they both felt it: in their core the unmistakable mark of Veldanava's essence resonating between them, warm and familiar, like two fragments of the same star finally drawn back together.

Their magicules reacted violently to the contact.

Stardust particles began swirling around both of them in a soft, glowing vortex. Blue and pinkish-white motes danced together, resonating in perfect harmony, as if the very essence of their beings recognized one another on the deepest level possible. The air shimmered and warped gently around them, the two ancient energies mingling like long-lost siblings finally reunited.

Rimuri's eyes widened as she watched the scene unfold. Without a word, she turned to the gathered villagers behind her. Her voice carried authority and understanding of exactly what this moment meant to varion.

"Everyone… back to the village," she said gently but firmly. "Give them space. This is private."

They nodded immediately, understanding the weight of the situation without needing a explanation. Prinz gave one last concerned glance toward Varion before helping guide the others away. Soon the entire group had quietly retreated, leaving the two Dragonoids completely alone in the clearing.

Varion's shoulders shook as he clung to Milim tighter, his usual steady strength melting away. He didn't have to be the big brother, the protector, the one who held everything together anymore. For the first time in years, he simply let himself fall apart in her embrace, burying his face deeper into her shoulder like a child who had finally come home.

Milim felt it — the way he gave in completely, the way the tension in his body dissolved. She didn't know what he had been through, but she could imagine it. The same crushing loneliness she had carried for centuries, only compressed into a much shorter, far more fragile lifetime. The weight of suddenly being the only one of his kind in a strange world. The pressure of protecting others when he himself had been so newly born into existence, from her perspective.

She gently stroked his crimson hair, her own tears still falling freely. Being the serious and comforting one didn't come naturally to her, she had spent thousands of years playing the role of the chaotic, carefree Destroyer, but right now, she instinctively found it. Something ancient and protective stirred inside her, and she held on tighter.

Varion's voice came out in a shaky, rambling whisper against her shoulder. "I didn't know… if I would ever find you," he choked out, words tumbling over each other. "After Dad died… everything happened so fast. I woke up without everyone else, alone, and then there were kids who needed me, people who relied on me… I tried so hard to be strong for them, but I missed him. I missed having my family. I didn't know if I'd ever meet you. I thought… I thought I might be the only one left." She was confused about certain parts but he would have plenty of time to explain later.

Milim's breath hitched. She hugged him even tighter, her small frame surprisingly strong as she rocked him gently. "Shhh… I'm here now," she whispered, voice unusually soft and steady. "You're not alone anymore. We're never going to be alone again."

She could feel it through their resonating magicules, it created a sort of emotional link, the weight he had been bearing. The loneliness. The pressure of suddenly being the only one of his kind. The responsibility he had taken on despite how young he was, at least compared to her. He was hurting just as deeply as she had been, perhaps even more in some ways because of how short his life had been and how much he had been forced to shoulder so quickly.

Milim pressed her face into his hair, letting her own tears soak into the strands as she held him. For the first time in centuries, she wasn't using her goofy mask and playing around to have fun. She wasn't the Demon Lord Milim. She was simply a big sister who had just found out she had a little brother, and found a sense of family she thought she would never have again.

They stayed like that for what felt like an eternity. Their magicules swirled gently around them in soft spirals of blue and pinkish-white, resonating in perfect harmony.

Eventually the sobs eased. The crushing wave of emotion receded just enough for them to breathe again and regain some composure.

Milim was the first to pull back, only far enough to look up at him. Her bright blue eyes were still shimmering with unshed tears, twin tails slightly disheveled from where his face had been buried in them. She kept her arms wrapped tightly around his waist, unwilling to let go completely. Varion loosened his hold just a fraction, one hand resting on the back of her head, thumb gently running along her pink hair.

Milim's voice came out quieter than anyone who knew her would have believed possible. "How…?" The single word carried a faint tremble, a sliver of hurt hidden beneath it. "Father never had any other children that I knew of. I thought I was the only one… How are you here?"

Varion took a slow, steadying breath. His emerald eyes met hers, raw and open in a way he rarely allowed himself to be. "I'm not originally from this world," he began, voice low but steady. "Let's start from the beginning. I'm from a world called Earth Land. Dad found me when I was… dying. He saw something in me, I guess, and decided he wasn't going to let me die. He gave me part of himself to save me that mixed with what I already was and remade me into a Dragonoid. He named me Varion Nava. He raised me, taught me magic, gave me a home, a family… everything when I had nothing."

He told her about the other dragons, the kids, about the guild in Magnolia, the battles he fought alongside his friends, the women who stood by his side, the tower, then him ending up here. Milim listened without interrupting, her usual chaotic energy replaced by a quiet, focused intensity that few ever saw.

But knew he had to tell her about the most painful moment in his life, so Varion told her about Veldanava's death, his voice grew noticeably heavier. His shoulders tensed. His expression darkened with a mix of deep pain, simmering anger, and raw hurt that he could no longer hide.

"Dad decided to take me on a training trip after talking with the dragons about something, we trained for a few days, …Then Acnologia came," he said, the words scraping out like gravel. "He attacked dad while he tried to protect me. I tried to help but I was just so weak, so he sent me away with his magic and I had to watch as he killed him. I couldn't do anything to stop it. Father was already weakened from creating me… and Acnologia took advantage of that and….."

The pain in his voice was unmistakable — the kind that came from carrying something far too heavy for far too long.

Milim's eyes widened. Hurt flashed across her face, genuine hurt for her little brother who had been forced to witness such a thing. But beneath it, something far more dangerous ignited: a deep, burning rage that made the air around them crackle faintly. Her small hands tightened on the back of Varion's shirt, magicules flaring with protective fury. She looked ready to tear the sky apart right then and there.

Yet Varion's own anger was quieter, more resolved, it was a cold, purposeful resolve that had been forged over the years, that had been tempered by the responsibilities he had.

"That bastard…" Milim whispered, voice laced with a quiet, lethal edge she almost never let slip. "He hurt Father… and he hurt you. I'll destroy him!! No one hurts my family and gets away with it. No one."

Varion let out a shaky breath and leaned his forehead against hers, the tension in his body easing slightly at her words. "I've been carrying that for a while," he admitted softly. " Sorry for just dumping all that on you ."

Milim hugged him tightly again, pressing her face into his chest. "no. I know how it feels to lose your family, even though our situations are slightly different, I know it still hurts just as bad." She said hugging him tighter. " I promise I won't lose you, I won't let anything else split our family apart again." She said with her eyes a glinting as if promising to destroy anything that would try.
