Chapter 77: New Dynamic

As they walked down the road towards the next town the atmosphere eased into something more normal but still had that particular charge to it.

Lumni was in a noticeably more upbeat mood after his talk as she walked a half-step closer than usual while happily humming. She looked genuinely pleased and more open than she had been since he first met her.

As they walked, she slowed down slightly and had a look on her face almost as if considering something. Then out of nowhere she casually lifted her right hand and held it out to the side in his direction, palm open, fingers slightly curled. She didn't look at him. She simply left it there, waiting.

Varion glanced down at the hand, brow faintly furrowed.

Lumni's eye twitched.

"Hold it," she said, voice flat but edged with irritation. "You're supposed to hold it."

His expression cleared into a small *oh.* He reached over, taking her hand into his, then slid his fingers between hers, locking them together. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze, as if to confirm his was there.

Lumni clicked her tongue.

"Took you long enough," she muttered, but there was no real heat in it. If anything, the corners of her mouth threatened to curve upward. She adjusted her grip so their hands fit more securely and kept walking, chin tilted just slightly higher than before.

They continued in comfortable silence for a bit before she spoke again, tone much lighter and noticeablely happier.

"So. Where exactly are we headed first?"

Varion glanced at their joined hands, then ahead. "There's a town a few day's walk from here. Figured we could pick up a job or two, keep moving."

"Mm." She gave his hand another small squeeze, almost absentminded. "Fine. But if the beds are terrible I'm sleeping with you again."

He huffed a quiet laugh. "Noted and not a problem."

They stopped for the night in a small clearing just off the road. The sun had dipped low enough that the light had turned soft and gold.

Varion dropped his pack and started setting up the tent. While he worked, Lumni sat on a flat rock and pulled a small comb from her bag and was slowly running it through her silver hair making sure it was smooth, looking completely unbothered by the fact that she hadn't even opened her own tent.

Varion glanced over once, then again. She still hadn't moved to unpack anything.

'Guess she's planning on sleeping with me again,' he thought, not really bothered by the idea of sleeping with her again.

Once the tent was up, he walked over to a nearby tree and sat down, leaning back against the trunk with a quiet sigh. He had only been there a moment when soft footsteps approached.

Lumni stopped in front of him, then without a word lowered herself down and rested her head in his lap. The sudden weight and warmth surprised him enough that he froze for a few seconds.

When he didn't immediately react, she clicked her tongue in clear annoyance, reached up, grabbed his hand, and placed it firmly on her head. Letting out a small humph to show her displeasure.

Varion blinked, then let out a quiet laugh and began gently running his fingers through her hair.

"Sorry," he said sincerely, "You're just being a lot more affectionate all of a sudden. Caught me off guard."

Lumni kept her eyes closed, but spoke in an imperious tone.

"Well, that's to be expected when someone like me decides to choose someone like you."

Varion smiled faintly, knowing she was just teasing him.

"Yes, yes, Queen Lumni. I'll pamper you as much as you want as an apology. I was just surprised, that's all."

Her lips curved slightly at the corners. She would definitely be holding him to that later.

"What did you think would happen? You basically confessed to a girl who already liked you. This was inevitable. I'm not so boring that I'd take forever to decide what I want… and what's mine."

Varion's hand stilled briefly in her hair and looked down at her with a smirk. Then he leaned down, close enough that his breath brushed her ear.

"Oh?~" he whispered, voice lower. "And what makes you think you aren't mine?"

As he pressed a slow kiss to the base of her ear.

Lumni's breath caught for just a second. A faint shiver ran through her before she could stop it. She kept her eyes closed, but the tips of her ears had turned a light shade of red.

"…Hmph."

She didn't pull away. If anything, she shifted slightly closer, pressing her head more firmly into his lap as if to hide the reaction.

"Don't get cocky," she muttered, though her voice lacked its usual sharpness. "You're still the one pampering me, remember."

Despite the words, she made no move to stop him, and the small, satisfied curve of her lips gave her away.

A few days passed in much the same way.

Somewhere along the road, the dynamic between them settled into something quieter and more familiar. Whenever Lumni walked past him while they were resting, Varion would reach out without much thought and pull her down into his lap. She never protested. If anything, she treated the space like it belonged to her, settling in with a small, satisfied shift of her weight and occasionally ordering him to adjust his arms or rub her head.

At night, sharing a tent had already become routine. There was no discussion about it anymore. She simply climbed in beside him, claimed her usual spot against his chest, and fell asleep like it was the most natural thing in the world.

By the time the first buildings of the town came into view, the two of them walked closer than they had when they first started traveling. Lumni's hand stayed loosely linked with his more often than not, and neither of them minded the constant contact.

The town itself was modest, wooden buildings, a few market stalls, and the usual mix of travelers and locals moving through the main road. As they stepped onto the street, a few heads turned to stare. More than a few of those stares were girls staring at Varion a little longer than Lumni liked.

He noticed the attention and glanced over out of reflex more than anything else.

Lumni saw and her expression cooled. Without a word she stepped in closer, wrapped both arms around his, and pressed herself against his side. Then she tilted her head and placed a slow lingering kiss against his neck, leaving a lipstick mark right over the pulse of his neck.

She pulled away then leaned closer speaking near his ear.

"Looking at other women while you're with me?"

Varion blinked, confused. "They were staring first."

"Mm."

She didn't let go, she stared at him pouting slightly.

After a second of thought, Varion decided not to let her think further. He leaned down and gave her a quick, but firm kiss on the lips.

Lumni's eyes widened slightly. For a brief moment the composed mask slipped, and something more openly possessive showed through, the look she was now giving him. Then she recovered, though there was faint red at the tips of her ears.

"…Good," she sniffed, then said quietly. "You're learning."

She kept her arms around his as they continued walking, the earlier tension fading back into her usual controlled demeanor.

They continued through the town until they found a nicer inn on the north side of town.

They paid for a better room on the upper floor of the inn. Lumni handled the request herself, telling the staff to bring dinner directly to them once it was ready. The moment the door closed behind them, Varion set their packs down and sat on the bed leaning against the wall. Before Lumni could do anything, Varion reached out and pulled her in, settling her between his legs with her back against his chest. His arms wrapped loosely around her waist.

Lumni's eyes narrowed slightly, though a small smirk tugged at her lips.

'He's getting far too comfortable taking the lead, I need to do something.' she thought. Already starting to form a plan.

When the food arrived, she didn't bother moving to the table. Instead she stayed right where she was, only shifting just enough to sit properly across his lap sideways, and pointed at the plates.

"Feed me."

Varion rolled his eyes but obliged. He simply picked up the fork and did as she asked, offering her bites while she leaned back against him like it was the most natural thing in the world. She made quiet sounds of approval every so often, clearly enjoying both the food and the attention.

After they finished their meal they got to dessert, which was a small slice of cake. Lumni took a bite, then paused, eyes half-lidding in satisfaction.

"Oh… this is really good," she said. "You should try some."

She scooped another piece onto the fork and turned in his lap so she was facing him. Varion opened his mouth so she could feed it to him.

Instead of feeding him, Lumni put the cake in her own mouth.

He had just enough time to look playfully annoyed before her hand came up, fingers sliding into his hair. She pulled him forward and crushed her lips against his, transferring the soft cake with slow, deliberate sweeps of her tongue. The kiss lasted several long seconds before she finally drew back. A thin string of saliva briefly connected them before breaking.

Lumni smirked, still close enough that her breath brushed his lips.

"Did it taste good~?" she whispered against his lips

Varion nodded, slightly dazed from the intense kiss. thought that it had been far hotter than it had any right to be.

Her smirk widened when she felt something firm press against her butt. She shifted her hips just enough to make the contact obvious.

"Oh?" she murmured, voice low and pleased. "Is that for me?"
