Cursing, Subaru crouched at the mouth of an alley, checking his gear. Wallet, phone, corn snacks, and cup noodles—all intact. He had died three times already. This was his fourth run. Even someone as dense as him realized he was a "reincarnator" with a cheat code: if he died, time rewound to a save point.
"Finally noticed, have you?"
Before Subaru could celebrate, a voice rang out directly in his mind. "Who's there?!" Subaru jumped as if his hair was on fire, clutching his head.
"Think of me as a god acting on a whim. You can call me Roy," Roy said with a smile. From his perspective, he was observing Subaru with a "God's Eye" view.
"A god?!" Subaru's mouth hung open. An isekai god? "Lord... Lord Roy! What's happening to me? Why am I here? What is 'Return by Death'?"
Roy sighed at the barrage of questions. "Don't ask. Knowing too much won't be good for you." The complexity of this world was S-tier; Roy wouldn't even dare enter it personally.
In a realm Subaru couldn't see, amidst eerie music and thick black fog, a beautiful girl appeared before Roy. Her silhouette was barely visible through the darkness. Roy looked at the Witch of Envy and smiled. "Don't glare at me like that. I'm not going to hurt him."
The Witch of Envy slowly approached and reached into Roy's chest, but felt nothing. Roy grinned. Trying to take my heart? Not that easy. This is just a consciousness link.
The Witch gave a long, ghostly sigh and faded away. With the authority of Return by Death, no one could truly kill Subaru anyway. Subaru, hearing Roy's voice, asked, "Lord Roy, who are you talking to?"
"A lovely lady who gave you 'Return by Death.' Unfortunately, she can't talk to you whenever she wants like I can," Roy joked.
Subaru was stunned. His power came from her? If "Lord Roy" said so, she must be a similar being. He had at least two "gods" watching over him. His excitement flared; he really was a light novel protagonist! These two entities would help him reach the pinnacle of life!
"You should know what to do now," Roy said. "Yes!" Subaru nodded firmly. The half-elf girl who helped him would have her insignia stolen, lead him to the slums, and they would both be killed by that terrifying woman. He had to stop it!
"Lord Roy... do you have something to give me too?" Subaru smiled ingratiatingly. "Return by Death" only ensured he didn't stay dead. Surely a god should give him some combat buffs!
"Don't worry. With me here, would I let you suffer? I'm just worried you won't be able to handle it!" Roy said grandly. Bragging cost nothing.
Subaru had no idea the voice in his head was a "pseudo-god." His blood boiled with excitement. Roy warned him, "Don't go into that alley, or those three thugs will kill you again."
Subaru pulled back his foot just in time. As expected of Lord Roy, he knows everything that happened last time! Roy wasn't just being kind; if Subaru shouted in that alley, he'd summon Reinhard, the "cheat" of this world. Roy needed his proxy to kill the target personally to get the rewards, so he had to prevent the meeting with Reinhard. And if Subaru failed? Well, there's always "Return by Death."
