Chapter 64 - Chapter 63 The Elder Scroll

Chapter 63 The Elder Scroll

They continued their journey after that incident, their footsteps echoing faintly against the ancient stone beneath Blackreach.

The cavern felt unnaturally still no distant chaurus screeches, no Falmer whispers only a heavy, suffocating silence left behind by Vuthuyol's death. Even the glowing fungi seemed dimmer, as if mourning the fallen dragon.

For a long while, neither of them spoke.

Alex finally broke the silence, his voice low and careful, as though afraid his words might shatter the fragile calm.

"Astrid… I hope you don't become obsessed with power."

He slowed his steps slightly, his gaze fixed forward. "I don't want you to meet a tragic fate."

Astrid stopped walking.

She turned toward him, her golden hair catching the faint blue glow of Blackreach. Her expression softened, concern flickering across her face.

"Actually…" she said quietly, "…I'm the one who's worried about you."

Alex blinked and looked at her, genuinely startled. One eyebrow rose instinctively.

"Me?" He let out a short, confused laugh. "Why are you worried about me?"

Astrid hesitated. She shifted her weight, her fingers curling slightly as if searching for the right words.

"Well…" She exhaled softly. "How should I say this…"

She raised her hand and gently tapped the dark surface of her Daedric armor, producing a dull metallic sound that echoed faintly in the cavern.

"First of all," she said, "you made this armor for me. And doing that meant dealing directly with Daedra."

Alex answered without hesitation, his voice calm yet firm.

"I didn't want you to get hurt. If facing Daedra was the price, then to me… it was worth it."

Astrid's cheeks flushed faintly. She looked away for a second, then cleared her throat.

"Ehem… and second," she continued, "do you remember when we went to subdue that newly awakened dragon with Delphine?"

Her brows knit together as the memory resurfaced.

"During the journey, you kept stabbing yourself again and again then healing yourself right after. You said it was to make yourself stronger."

She raised both hands to her head, fingers threading anxiously through her hair.

"I was terrified, Alex."

Alex stopped walking completely and turned to face her, his expression growing serious.

"Hey… but I stopped doing that," he said softly. "You remember, right? You told me to stop because "

He lowered his gaze slightly, his voice dropping into something far more sincere.

"Your face looked so worried back then… like you were about to cry every time I did it again."

His fists clenched faintly at his sides.

"And I never want to see you cry. I never want to see you hurt."

He turned his head forward again, eyes hardening with resolve as he stared down the path ahead.

"I won't let what happened at Mount Summit when we were surrounded by monsters ever happen again."

His voice was steady, unyielding.

"So if you don't want me doing things that make you worry…"

He turned back to Astrid, meeting her gaze directly.

"Then don't disappear from my life."

A faint bitterness slipped into his tone.

"Otherwise… I might end up like the Dwemer trying to achieve the impossible"

Astrid froze.

She grabbed her head with both hands, her face flushing a deep red.

"Ehem !" she stammered. "That's not fair. That's really not fair!"

She pouted slightly, her eyes shimmering.

"Why are you the only one allowed to worry?"

Before Alex could respond, she stepped closer close enough that he could feel her warmth. She lifted both hands and gently cupped his cheeks, her touch firm yet tender.

Alex's breath caught.

Up close, her face looked impossibly soft and graceful. Her sapphire-blue eyes reflected the glow of Blackreach like precious gems, filled with worry, affection, and longing all at once.

Astrid spoke in a quiet voice, barely above a whisper yet every word reached Alex clearly.

"Darling…"

Her brows lifted slightly, her expression openly pleading.

"I'm begging you. Please don't disappear from my life either."

She leaned closer. Their noses were almost touching now. Her warm breath brushed against his lips and nose, sending a shiver through him. The distance between them vanished in an instant.

"I love you, Astrid," Alex whispered, his voice trembling as he leaned in.

"I love you too, Alex," she replied softly, her lips curving into a tender smile.

Their lips met in a slow, gentle kiss one filled with longing, fear, and deep affection. It wasn't rushed or desperate; it was as if they were silently promising never to lose each other.

For that moment, the vast cavern of Blackreach felt warm.

And profoundly, eerily silent.

Soon, the narrow path of Blackreach opened into a vast, silent expanse.

At the very end of the stone road stood a tower of immense height, rising like a solitary sentinel against the cavern's glowing sky. Its surface was forged from ancient Dwemer metal, etched with intricate geometric patterns that pulsed faintly with a dim, amber light.

The words engraved upon its entrance were unmistakable:

Tower of Mzark.

The air around the structure felt heavier as if the tower itself was exuding pressure. Even the distant hum of Dwemer machinery seemed to quiet in its presence, and the glowing fungi scattered across the cavern floor flickered softly, casting long, wavering shadows along the tower's base.

Alex slowed his steps, lifting his gaze toward the towering structure.

"Alright, Astrid," he said, his voice steady but tinged with awe.

"Looks like we've reached the Tower of Mzark the place that supposedly holds the Elder Scroll."

Astrid stopped beside him.

She stared up at the tower, her throat tightening. Her fingers curled slowly into her palm as she swallowed hard, a chill running down her spine. It felt as though an invisible thread was pulling her forward like her fate itself was bound to whatever lay within that ancient structure.

For a brief moment, doubt flickered in her eyes.

Then she inhaled deeply.

Her expression hardened with resolve.

Without another word, Astrid stepped forward and grasped the Dwemer lever beside the entrance. The metal was cold beneath her gauntlet, vibrating faintly as if responding to her touch. She pulled it down with a sharp, decisive motion.

CLANK.

The sound echoed loudly through Blackreach.

Ancient gears groaned to life, their movements slow but powerful. The tower shuddered as hidden mechanisms awakened, and the platform beneath their feet began to rise, lifting them upward into the tower's depths.

Astrid planted her feet firmly as the ascent began, her eyes fixed ahead. Her voice was quiet but unwavering.

"Let's get that scroll."

Above them, the Tower of Mzark loomed, ready to reveal the fate sealed within its ancient walls.

At the top of the ascent, the platform came to a halt with a heavy metallic thrum.

Before them lay a circular chamber, enclosed by curved Dwemer walls etched with countless runes and mechanical seams. A faint golden light seeped from the grooves in the metal, illuminating the room in a warm yet eerie glow. The air was stale, thick with the scent of old ash and cold metal.

Near the wall lay a discarded bedroll, its fabric frayed and stiff with age. Beside it was a small pile of burned wood, reduced to blackened charcoal, and above it rested a dented cooking pot, still balanced on a ring of stone as if someone had simply walked away and never returned.

Alex stepped forward and slowly scanned the room, his eyes narrowing.

"Hm…" he murmured, folding his arms.

"Looks like someone explored this place before us."

Astrid stiffened instantly.

Her shoulders tensed, and she spun toward him, eyes widening in alarm.

"What?" she blurted out. "What if the Elder Scroll has already been taken?!"

Her gaze darted around the chamber, her grip tightening on her weapon as if expecting someone to step out from the shadows.

Alex chuckled softly and shook his head. He reached into his pack and calmly pulled out the Blank Lexicon, holding it up so the faint light reflected off its smooth, alien surface.

"That's impossible," he said with quiet confidence.

"You need this item not brute force to retrieve the Elder Scroll. And you can't just smash Dwemer constructions either." He tapped the metal wall beside him. "These things are reinforced with magic."

Astrid blinked, then let out a long breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Her shoulders dropped, and the tension drained from her posture.

"Yeah…" she said with a small, relieved smile.

"You're right."

Alex slipped the Blank Lexicon back into his pack, then turned to her with a thoughtful expression.

"So, what do you think?" he asked.

"Should we keep going, or take a short rest first? The Elder Scroll should be in the next chamber. It won't take long to reach it."

Astrid looked down for a moment, tapping her armored finger lightly against her gauntlet as she considered his words. Then she lifted her head, her eyes steady and determined.

"Let's take the Elder Scroll first," she said firmly.

"I want to get this over with. Only then will I be able to relax."

Alex smiled faintly and nodded.

"Alright," he said.

"You're the boss."

They stepped into the next chamber, and the air immediately felt heavier.

Before them loomed a massive Dwemer mechanism, its colossal bronze rings and interlocking plates rising from the floor like the ribcage of some ancient, slumbering beast. Faint streams of golden light pulsed through narrow seams in the metal, accompanied by a deep, rhythmic hum that vibrated through the soles of their boots.

Scattered across the stone floor were several corpses, their bodies dried and shriveled. Their armor clung loosely to their frames, skin drawn tight against bone not a single wound from blades or magic to be seen. They looked as though life had simply been drained from them over time.

Astrid slowed her steps instinctively, her grip tightening around her weapon.

Alex crouched beside one of the bodies, studying it with a solemn expression.

"They probably died of starvation," he said quietly, his voice echoing softly in the vast chamber.

"It makes sense. They overcame countless trials just to reach this place… but once they arrived, they couldn't solve the puzzle."

He straightened and glanced toward the towering mechanism.

"Without the Blank Lexicon," he continued, "this place is nothing but a dead end."

A heavy silence settled over them as they moved past the remains and followed the path upward, the sound of their footsteps swallowed by the endless machinery.

At the top, the chamber opened into a wider platform.

Astrid and Alex both stopped in their tracks.

Before them stood the heart of the Dwemer device, shaped like a colossal, unblinking eye. Concentric rings hovered and rotated slowly around a central core, each movement precise, deliberate almost watchful. The golden light spilling from its center illuminated their faces, casting long shadows behind them.

Astrid's mouth fell slightly open.

"Wow, Alex…" she breathed.

"They really built all of this just to store an Elder Scroll? That's… incredible."

Alex felt the same awe tighten in his chest.

(This is nothing like seeing it on a game screen…) he thought. (This feels real. Overwhelmingly real.)

"Yeah," he said aloud, his voice hushed despite himself.

"They guarded this artifact very carefully."

His eyes traced the structure upward until he spotted a familiar indentation near the top.

He lifted his hand and pointed.

"Astrid, look. That must be where the Blank Lexicon goes."

They climbed the steps together and carefully placed the Blank Lexicon into the slot.

The moment it locked into place, the chamber responded.

A sharp click echoed through the air.

Panels along the device slid open, revealing rows of buttons, their surfaces glowing faintly as ancient locks disengaged. Deep within the mechanism, gears groaned to life, their motion sending tremors through the floor.

Astrid hesitated, then reached out and pressed one of the buttons.

The massive structure below them lurched, rings shifting and rotating with a thunderous metallic sound.

Astrid flinched and immediately turned to Alex, panic flashing across her face.

"A-Alex! What do we do? I don't know this Dwemer puzzle!"

Alex stepped forward at once, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder and gently guiding her aside.

"Leave it to me," he said calmly.

(This puzzle is actually simple,) he thought. (You just keep pressing the buttons until the adjacent ones unlock.)

With focused eyes, Alex began pressing the buttons in sequence. Each press triggered a response rings aligning, lights shifting, mechanisms locking into place. The humming grew steadier, smoother, as if the machine itself was finally satisfied.

After a few tense moments, the device emitted a deep, resonant clang.

The rotating rings slowed… then stopped.

From the heart of the mechanism, a compartment slid open, revealing an object shaped unmistakably like a scroll.

Astrid gasped.

She grabbed Alex by the shoulders and shook him excitedly, her face lighting up with joy.

"You did it, Alex!" she exclaimed.

"I didn't expect you to be this smart hehe!"

Alex laughed as he tried to steady himself, raising his hands defensively.

"O-okay, okay!" he said, grinning.

"If you shake me any harder, my bones might get dislocated!"

Astrid giggled softly, the sound echoing warmly through the ancient Dwemer chamber.

They descended from the platform, their footsteps echoing softly as they approached the heart of the chamber.

The Elder Scroll rested within the Dwemer mechanism, suspended as if untouched by time itself. The air around it shimmered faintly, distorting the light like heat rising from a flame. Even the low mechanical hum of the tower seemed to quiet, as though the ancient machine was bowing before the artifact it protected.

Astrid slowed to a stop.

Her breath caught in her throat as she stared at the scroll. A strange sensation crawled up her arms, prickling her skin. She hugged herself lightly, as if trying to steady her racing heartbeat.

"Alex…" she whispered, her voice trembling despite her attempt to sound calm.

"This really feels like the artifact."

She took a cautious step closer.

"When I get near it, my skin tingles," she continued softly.

"It's like this thing carries countless destinies… countless lives. I don't even know how to explain it."

Alex felt it too the pressure, the weight, the overwhelming sense of inevitability radiating from the scroll. It was as if the future itself was standing before them.

He exhaled slowly and met her gaze.

"Alright…" he said gently.

"Take it, Astrid. You're the one who deserves it. Your fate is tied to that scroll."

Astrid hesitated for a heartbeat longer, then reached out.

As she lifted the Elder Scroll from the Dwemer mechanism, a sudden gust of wind swept through the chamber. Her golden hair fluttered wildly, strands catching the glow of the artifact as if wrapped in light. The metal rings of the device creaked softly, responding to the artifact's removal.

Astrid held the scroll carefully in both hands, its surface warm almost alive.

Slowly, she began to open it.

Alex immediately stepped back, turning his face slightly away and raising an arm to shield his eyes.

"Astrid," he said urgently but calmly,

"I should keep my distance. If an ordinary person looks into an Elder Scroll, they'll go blind. It's different for a Dragonborn."

Astrid nodded faintly and continued.

The moment the scroll opened, a brilliant, blinding light burst forth, flooding the chamber. The ancient walls reflected its radiance, casting sharp shadows that danced wildly across the floor. The air vibrated, as if reality itself were trembling.

Alex squinted, covering his eyes as the light flared then, slowly, it dimmed… and faded away.

Silence returned.

Astrid lowered the scroll, her expression dazed, eyes wide with lingering awe.

"Alex…" she asked hesitantly, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Is this really the Elder Scroll?"

Alex turned back toward her and nodded without hesitation.

"Yes," he said firmly.

"That's the Elder Scroll."

Astrid frowned slightly, confusion crossing her face. She glanced down at the artifact in her hands, then back at Alex.

"But…" she said slowly,

"Why didn't I obtain the Dragonrend shout?"
