Chapter 65 - Chapter 64 The Bound Grow Stronger

Chapter 64 The Bound Grow Stronger

Inside the Tower of Mzark, far above the abyssal glow of Blackreach, the ancient Dwemer machinery loomed in solemn silence. Brass pillars engraved with fading runes rose toward the ceiling, while massive gears and pistons stood frozen in place, as if the entire structure itself were holding its breath. Pale light reflected off metal and stone, casting long, trembling shadows across the platform.

At the very center of it all, Astrid stood rigid, an Elder Scroll clutched tightly in her hands.

Her fingers trembled around the impossible parchment, its surface shimmering faintly with symbols that refused to stay still. Cold sweat dotted her brow as the weight of what had just happened crashed down on her.

She turned sharply toward Alex, panic flooding her face.

"Alex… what do we do?" Her voice cracked, barely steady. "We've failed. The hopes of the people of Skyrim are gone the world is doomed. What are we supposed to do?!"

She began pacing in frantic circles, boots scraping against the Dwemer metal floor. Each step was uneven, restless her shoulders tense, her breaths shallow and erratic. She ran a hand through her hair, then clenched it into a fist, spinning around again as if trapped inside her own thoughts.

Alex stepped forward immediately, raising both hands in a calming gesture.

"Astrid calm down," he said firmly but gently. "Breathe. Slow down. Just… breathe with me."

Astrid stopped mid-step and looked at him but the Elder Scroll was still open in her hands. Its unnatural glow pulsed faintly, bathing her face in ghostly light.

Alex flinched and turned his head away at once, shielding his eyes with an arm.

"Hey wait. Before anything else," he said quickly, wincing, "you need to close that Elder Scroll. I'm serious. If I keep looking at it, I'm afraid I'll go blind."

Realizing this, Astrid sucked in a sharp breath. Her hands moved instantly she snapped the Elder Scroll shut and hugged it to her chest like something fragile and dangerous all at once.

She closed her eyes.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Her shoulders rose and fell as she took several deep breaths, forcing the chaos in her mind to settle. The silence of the tower slowly crept back in, broken only by the faint hum of ancient machinery and the distant echo of dripping water far below.

After a few moments, the tension in her posture eased. Her grip loosened. When she opened her eyes again, the wild panic had dulled into controlled unease.

Alex watched her carefully, then nodded to himself and spoke.

"It's not that the Elder Scroll is useless," he said in a calm, measured tone. "You're just… using it the wrong way."

Astrid blinked, her brows knitting together.

Alex continued, tapping a finger against his temple as if reminding her of something obvious.

"You forgot, didn't you? You're supposed to use it at the summit of the Throat of the World."

For a split second, Astrid froze.

Then her eyes widened.

"Ah…" Her lips parted slightly as realization struck. "…right."

The words came out quiet, almost embarrassed.

Alex let out a long, weary sigh, rubbing the back of his neck as the tension finally drained from him.

Alex looked at Astrid with a faint, crooked smirk, the tension from moments ago finally loosening his shoulders.

"Huh… it's rare to see you panic like that," he said, tilting his head slightly, eyes glinting with playful mischief. "Usually, when something like this happens, you'd be more like "

Before she could respond, Alex straightened his posture and exaggerated his movements, puffing out his chest as he perfectly mimicked her usual bravado.

"Hmph! If even the Elder Scroll is useless," he said in an overly dramatic voice, striking an imaginary heroic pose, "then I'll just beat Alduin myself! Hahaha!"

The echo of his mock laughter bounced faintly off the Dwemer walls.

Then, just as suddenly, he relaxed, dropping the act and returning to his usual tone.

"Like that."

Smack!

Astrid's palm connected cleanly with the back of his head.

"Idiot!" she snapped, cheeks slightly flushed. "What kind of woman do you think I am?!"

"Ow!!" Alex staggered half a step forward, clutching his head. "You didn't have to hit my head!"

Astrid exhaled sharply, rubbing her temple as she forced herself to calm down again. The tension in her shoulders slowly eased.

"…Alright," she said at last, her voice steadier now. "So that means we need to go back to Paarthurnax, right?"

Alex's expression brightened instantly, his earlier pain forgotten.

"Oh yeah," he said with an eager grin. "I love that dragon. I mean, who else could calm down a barbarian woman like you when she's angry?"

Astrid shot him a sharp glare, her eyes narrowing.

"Do you want to get hit again?"

Alex reacted on instinct, raising both hands to shield his head.

"H-Hey, I'm joking! Just joking, darling sweetheart my love, hehe."

She sighed deeply, shaking her head.

"You're lucky you're cute."

Alex leaned closer, grin widening.

"Well, honestly… you're pretty cute when you're angry too."

Astrid froze.

A faint blush crept up her cheeks before she could stop it.

Alex noticed immediately.

"Oh?" he said, voice light with amusement. "So… can I tease you a little more? Hehe."

Thud!

"Guhk!!"

Astrid smacked his head again without hesitation.

She turned away quickly, pretending to examine the room, the massive Dwemer machinery humming softly around them.

"So…" she said, clearing her throat, "do we have to go all the way back through Blackreach to get out?"

Alex groaned, rubbing his head.

"Oww… that really hurts."

After a short pause, he replied,

"No. We don't need to go back."

Astrid turned to him, curiosity lighting her eyes.

"Oh? You know a shortcut?"

Alex looked away dramatically, pressing a hand to his head.

"Well… my head was hit pretty hard. Maybe a little kiss on my cheek would help me remember."

Astrid rolled her eyes.

"Unbelievable."

Still, she stepped closer and planted a quick kiss on his cheek.

"There. Now show me the way."

Alex smirked, clearly pleased.

"Ah… I forgot. It's not my cheek my head hurts. A kiss on the painful spot would work better."

He gave her a playful wink.

Astrid sighed once more, one eyebrow lifting but this time, her lips curved into a warm, fond smile.

"Yeah… alright. My little man."

She leaned down and gently kissed the top of his head.

"There now don "

Suddenly, Astrid changed her mind.

Before Alex could react, she leaned in and pressed a quick, bold kiss to his lips then pulled away just as fast.

Alex froze.

"Okay…" he said, stunned, touching his lips. "That surprised me a little."

Astrid crossed her arms, looking composed.

"Alright. I think the playing around is over. Let's get out of this room."

Alex turned to leave

But Astrid grabbed his wrist.

"Oh no, you don't."

Alex swallowed. He knew exactly where this was heading.

"Astrid hey," he said carefully, "we need to save the world, remember?"

He met her gaze and the look in her eyes sent a shiver down his spine.

With a slow step forward, she smiled teasingly.

"Oh, of course," she whispered. "Go ahead… try and see if you can get away from me."

Alex's throat went dry.

"S-Sweetheart…"

Hearing that, Astrid's expression softened and then deepened with something far more dangerous. Her breathing grew unsteady as she closed the distance between them, her face only inches from his.

"Yes…" she murmured. "My little sweet pie."

She leaned in, and the world beyond the Tower of Mzark seemed to fade away as they kissed slow at first, then deeper, charged with everything left unspoken.

Time passed unnoticed.

Much later, Astrid lay beside him, her expression calm, satisfied, and glowing faintly in the Dwemer light. Alex, on the other hand, looked utterly exhausted, staring at the ceiling in silence.

Yes… it had happened again.

They'd been so careless, so caught up in each other, that they'd somehow drifted from the chamber of the Elder Scroll into the neighboring circular hall.

Eventually, with the ancient machines humming softly around them, exhaustion claimed them both and they fell asleep side by side.

When Alex finally stirred awake, the first thing he noticed was the soft metallic hum of Dwemer machinery echoing faintly through the circular chamber. Pale amber light filtered in from the massive constructs above, casting slow-moving shadows across the floor and across Astrid's sleeping form beside him.

A translucent status window flickered into existence before his eyes.

He blinked once, then smiled faintly.

Remembering fragments of last night the warmth, the closeness, the way everything else had faded away he let out a quiet, tired chuckle.

"…Looks like I should put all my points into stamina."

The interface responded instantly.

Alex exhaled slowly, feeling the change settle into his body his limbs lighter, his breath steadier.

His gaze drifted to Astrid.

She was still asleep, chest rising and falling in a slow, peaceful rhythm, golden hair spilling messily across her shoulders. There was an unguarded softness to her expression that she rarely showed when awake.

"Hm…" Alex murmured to himself. "Her stamina keeps increasing too. I don't know whether that's a good thing… or a dangerous one."

He sighed, then a crooked grin tugged at his lips as the memories returned in full color.

"But still," he muttered, warmth spreading through his chest, "I don't hate it. Hehe."

Carefully, he leaned closer and gently shook her shoulder.

"Hey… wake up, Astrid."

She didn't respond, so he shook her a little more, still gentle.

"Hey. Wake up. You'll catch a cold put your clothes on first, okay?"

With a soft groan, Alex pushed himself up and began gathering his scattered belongings. His shirt lay in one room, his boots in another and astrid Daedric armor was sprawled carelessly near chamber elder scroll to the circular chamber.

He clicked his tongue quietly.

"Man… if someone else were here and saw this Daedric armor, it'd be gone for sure," he muttered, lifting one piece after another.

"We really didn't pay attention to our surroundings. But… this place is deserted. Should be fine."

Behind him, Astrid finally stirred.

"Mmmph…"

She stretched lazily, arching her back without a care, golden hair tousled and wild. Her movements were slow and unhurried, still half lost in sleep as she sat up and then stood nakedly.

"Alex…" she murmured, eyes barely open. "Where are you…?"

Alex turned his head.

"I'm over here!!"

Astrid followed his voice, rubbing one eye as she walked.

"Oh…" she said softly when she spotted him. "…there you are."

Without hesitation, she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a tight embrace. The sudden weight made Alex grunt slightly.

"H-Hey put your clothes on first!" he protested, laughing despite himself. "You'll get cold!"

He quickly pulled her Daedric armor from his system inventory and held it out.

"Here. Wear this."

Astrid didn't move.

Instead, she relaxed further into him, cheek pressing against his chest.

"Mmm…" she murmured contentedly. "I'm lazy. I want to stay like this for a bit. Besides… if we hug, our bodies keep each other warm, you know."

Alex hesitated, hands hovering awkwardly before resting lightly on her shoulders.

"I'm worried you'll catch a cold," he said softly. "Please… put it on."

Astrid tilted her head slightly, still clinging to him.

"Then…" she said sleepily, "…put it on for me."

Alex laughed nervously, scratching his cheek.

"Hehe… if I do that, I'm afraid I won't end up putting your armor on."

He swallowed. "I'll end up doing something else."

She answered without hesitation, voice calm and comfortable.

"Oh. I don't mind that at all."

Alex froze.

His face heated instantly.

"Haaah…" he surrendered, letting out a long breath. "Alright, alright. I'll help you put it on."

He paused, then added more seriously,

"But we really do need to head to the Throat of the World."

Astrid smiled faintly, still close, before finally loosening her grip.

Their relationship had clearly crossed into something deeper this kind of closeness, this quiet intimacy, had already become natural for them.

And as the ancient Dwemer tower continued its endless hum around them, they prepared to move forward together once more.

Soon, Astrid stood fully clad in her Daedric armor, every dark plate locked neatly into place. The jagged black metal hugged her form perfectly, faint crimson lines pulsing softly as if the armor itself acknowledged its wearer. She rolled her shoulders once, testing the fit, the armor responding smoothly without a sound.

Alex took a step back, arms loosely crossed, giving an approving nod.

"…Yeah," he said quietly, a small smile tugging at his lips. "It suits you. Almost like it was made for you."

Astrid glanced down at herself, then back at him, lips curving faintly.

"You're the one who made me wear it," she replied lightly. "So that means it's your fault if I look intimidating."

He chuckled and gestured forward.

"Come on. This way."

They moved together through the ancient corridors, the low hum of Dwemer machinery guiding their steps. The metallic floor vibrated faintly beneath their boots, and the amber glow of Blackreach slowly faded as they approached a towering structure ahead.

Then it came into view.

A massive Dwemer lift, its frame carved with intricate runes and reinforced pistons, stood quietly at the edge of the platform its cables disappearing upward into darkness.

Alex stopped and pointed.

"Ah. There it is the lift to the surface."

Astrid let out a soft breath, relief flickering across her face. She stepped closer to Alex and rested a hand on his shoulder, her grip firm but gentle grounding.

"You know…" she said slowly, eyes still on the lift, "I don't really understand it."

Alex glanced at her.

"You always know where to go," she continued, her tone calm, thoughtful. "You guide our path without hesitation. You found Blackreach. The artifacts. Even this place."

Her fingers tightened slightly on his shoulder as she finally looked at him.

"And yet… I've never asked why."

A small, sincere smile appeared. "Don't you want to share your story with me, my love?"

The word love lingered softly between them.

For a moment, Alex didn't answer.

They stepped into the lift together, the metal platform groaning faintly under their weight. Alex reached out and pulled the lever. With a deep, resonant clank, the lift began to rise, gears grinding slowly as the world below descended into shadow.

The ascent was quiet.

Too quiet.

Only the rhythmic creak of cables and the distant echo of machinery accompanied them. The air grew cooler, heavier. Astrid stood beside Alex, arms relaxed at her sides but her attention was fully on him now.

After several long seconds, Alex finally spoke.

"Well…" he said, exhaling slowly, eyes fixed ahead. "Okay. Maybe I'll tell you about my past."

He hesitated, fingers curling slightly at his side.

"But I don't know," he added quietly, "if you'll believe it."

Astrid's relaxed expression vanished instantly. She turned toward him fully now, eyes widening not in fear, but pure curiosity. Her grip tightened on the edge of the lift.

"Alex…?" she said softly.

He met her gaze.

"Astrid," he said, his voice low, steady but heavy with meaning, "I'm not from this world."

The lift continued to rise.

The gears continued to turn.

But between them, everything fell completely silent.
