Chapter 19 - The Conversation Alan Was Never Meant to Hear

Julia barely made it through the morning session. Her throat was dry, her palms shaky, and every time the wind blew, she could swear she still smelled Alan on her skin.

The night in Hawaii had changed everything. And nothing.

She couldn't look at him in the conference hall without remembering the heat of his breath, the way he whispered her name against her lips, and how he pulled her close like she belonged to him.

It was too much.Too dangerous.Too real.

Kai found her the moment the meeting ended.

"Julia," he said quietly. "We need to talk. Now."

Her stomach twisted. She knew this was coming.

But she didn't expect Alan to be watching from across the hall, jaw tight, expression unreadable. He didn't follow her.He didn't stop them.

But his eyes tracked her every step until she disappeared from sight.

Kai escorted her into a small conference room overlooking the ocean. He shut the door gently, turning to face her—not angry, not accusing.

Just concerned.

"Julia," he began softly, "you weren't in your room last night."

Her breath caught. If he only knew—

"Everyone noticed," Kai added. "Veronica was practically stalking you this morning."

Julia rubbed her arms. "I told her I fell asleep in the lounge."

Kai stepped closer. "Is that the truth?"

Her silence was answer enough.

He exhaled slowly.Not judgmental—hurt.

"Julia… are you involved with Alan?"

She gasped. "No—Kai, please, don't say it like that. It's not—"

"You're not denying it."His tone was gentle, but firm.

She backed up a step, unable to look him in the eyes.

"It was a mistake," she whispered. "Last night shouldn't have happened."

Kai stared at her, a shadow crossing his face.

"I knew there was something between you two," he said quietly. "The way he looks at you… Julia, I've been in this industry long enough to recognize obsession."

Her heart slammed painfully.

"Kai—"

"I'm not angry at you," he interrupted. "I'm angry because he has power. Because you're vulnerable. Because you deserve better than being someone's secret."

Her throat tightened.

Kai stepped closer, lowering his voice.

"You know what people are saying, right? That you're a gold digger. That you're sleeping your way up." He swallowed hard. "I don't want that for you. Julia, you're better than him."

Her chest ached.Because despite everything, a part of her didn't believe that.

Kai reached out, cupping her elbow gently.

"If you're in trouble… if he's forcing something… I can protect you."

Julia closed her eyes.

"No, Kai. He didn't force me."The confession escaped like a cracked whisper.

"And I don't regret it."

Kai's hand froze on her arm.

Something in him cracked—quietly, painfully.

"I see," he whispered.

A soft click echoed near the door.

Julia turned.

Kai turned.

And her blood ran cold.

Alan stood in the doorway.

Not inside.Not barging in.

Just standing there.

Expression unreadable, hands in his pockets, eyes—eyes burning with something dark and violent.

He had heard.All of it.

"Alan—" Julia breathed.

But he didn't speak.

Kai straightened, shielding Julia slightly with his body.

"Eavesdropping isn't very professional for a CEO," Kai said calmly.

Alan's jaw shifted—one tiny, lethal movement.

"What I just heard," he said, voice low, "wasn't professional either."

Kai didn't flinch."If your relationship with her is real, you shouldn't be listening at doors."

Alan's eyes slid to Julia.

"Real," he repeated softly. "Is that what you think last night was?"

Her throat closed.

Kai stepped in front of her fully now.

"She said she doesn't regret it," he said. "But she also doesn't owe you anything."

Alan's gaze sharpened like a blade.

"Oh, she owes me plenty."

"Alan—" Julia's voice shook.

But he cut her a look so intense it pinned her in place.

"And you," he said to Kai, tone icy, "should stay out of what you don't understand."

Kai's voice lowered to a dangerous calm.

"You underestimate how much I understand."

The two men stared at each other—CEO vs. auditor.Predator vs. challenger. Both ready to tear the other apart.

And Julia was the battleground.

Alan finally stepped inside, closing the door behind him with a soft, terrifying click.

"Julia," he said, voice too calm, "come here."

Her breath caught.

Kai blocked her path.

"No," he said. "Not unless you talk like a civilized man instead of acting like she's property."

Alan's eyes went black.

"Move."

Kai didn't.

The air crackled—heavy, electric, dangerous.

Julia grabbed Kai's sleeve."Kai, please. Not here."

Alan's eyes flicked down to her hand touching Kai.

Something in him snapped.

He stepped forward so suddenly Kai had to push Julia behind him.

But Alan didn't touch him.He simply leaned in, voice a whisper made of knives.

"You don't get to touch her like that."

Kai smirked coldly. "Why? Because you think she's yours?"

Alan didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

His voice was soft, steady, lethal.

"Julia," he repeated, "come. Here."

Julia's knees trembled. Not out of fear—but because she'd never heard him sound like that before. Not anger.

Possession mixed with panic.

She took a tiny step.

Kai grabbed her wrist."Think before you go to him."

Alan's eyes fell to their joined hands.

A storm rose behind them.

"Let go," Alan said quietly.

Kai didn't.

Julia felt the heat of the moment shift—dangerously.

She swallowed, whispering, "Kai… please."

Slowly, painfully, Kai released her wrist.

Alan exhaled sharply—relief mixed with rage.

Julia stepped toward him.

Alan caught her hand.Held it.Like he'd been holding his breath since dawn.

Kai's voice broke the silence.

"This isn't over."

Alan didn't turn around.

"No," he said. "It isn't."

Alan led Julia out of the room, fingers threaded with hers in a grip that said everything he couldn't speak aloud.

Possessive.Terrified.Shaken.Claiming.

And behind them, Kai stood alone—eyes cold, jaw tight—a new player in a war Julia never meant to start.

But from this moment on…

Nothing in Hawaii would stay calm.

Not the trip. Not their reputations. Not her heart.

And definitely not Alan's.
