Chapter 92 - The Echoes of the Heart and the American Gambit

Chapter—The Echoes of the Heart and the American Gambit

The winter wind howled through the steel canyons of Tokyo, carrying with it the scent of frost and the unspoken weight of a thousand secrets. Marin walked with her head bowed, her shadow figure small against the glowing store signs of the Shinjuku district. The elegant dress she had worn with such hope now felt like a heavy costume, a reminder of a moment that had slipped through her fingers like sand.

"I couldn't do it," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Again. I failed again."

"Did you succeed?"

Marin gasped, spinning around. Standing in the glow of a nearby vending machine was Chika, her hands tucked into her oversized jacket pockets. Her expression was a mix of curiosity and knowing sympathy.

"Oh... Chika. I didn't notice you," Marin said, quickly wiping a stray tear. "What are you asking about?"

Chika stepped forward, her eyes narrowing playfully. "I'm asking about your feelings for Luke. Did you tell him? Or did the 'World's One of the Strongest Aura Creator' lose her nerve the moment the boy looked at her?"

Marin tried to brush it off, her face heating up. "What feelings? Luke is my teammate, Chika. I don't understand what you're—"

"Stop it," Chika interrupted, a soft laugh escaping her. "You can lie to Liod or Uno, but you can't lie to your best friend. I know you like Luke. I know you wanted to ask him to be your Valentine for February 14th. Am I right?"

The silence stretched for a long beat until Marin finally deflated, her shoulders dropping. "You're right. I was trying. I had the dress, the place, the words... and then the world happened. A node was found, and he vanished. Now I'm questioning myself—can I ever actually succeed?"

She paused, taking a long breath of the cold air, then looked at Chika with a sudden, sharp realization. "Wait... what about you? Why are you out here dressed differently? Did you succeed?"

Now it was Chika's turn to startle. Her confident smirk vanished, replaced by a frantic look of denial. "What? I... I'm just wearing a new jacket! It's cold!"

"Don't lie," Marin said, a small, mischievous smile returning to her face. "I saw how determined you were this morning. You went to see Uno, didn't you? You tried to confess."

Chika groaned, covering her face with her hands. "Fine! Yes...We're in the same boat, okay? I tried to drop a hint about the 14th, and the idiot just started talking about his new defensive technique. We both failed. We're both pathetic."

The two girls looked at each other and, despite the sorrow of the night, they burst into a small, shared laugh. The burden felt lighter when shared with someone who understood the unique pain of loving a boy who was too busy and not have time to notice the girl standing right in front of him.

As they walked back toward the base, Marin suddenly grabbed Chika's arm and pulled her into the shadow of a building. "Wait... is that Shuri and Liod?"

Further down the street, Shuri was walking beside Liod, carrying a heavy-looking shopping bag. Liod was scratching the back of his head, looking a bit flustered.

"Thank you again, Shuri," Liod was saying. "I really didn't mean to drag you into helping me with these supply runs."

"It's no problem, Liod," Shuri said, her voice soft and shy. "We're friends. I'm happy to help."

They reached the corner near Liod's apartment. "Well, I'll take it from here," Liod said, reaching for the bag. "Thanks again."

As he turned to leave, Shuri hesitated, then called out, "Liod! Wait!"

Liod stopped. "Yeah? What is it?"

Shuri's face was beet red, her fingers twisting the hem of her coat. "Are you... are you free on February 14th?"

Liod thought for a moment. "The 14th? Yeah, the dungeon schedule is clear that day. Why?"

Shuri took a deep breath. "Actually, I have some shopping to do—special items for the guild. Luke is busy that day, so... will you come with me? Just to help?"

Liod grinned, blissfully unaware of the implications. "Sure! If you need a hand, I'm your guy. Just message me the details."

"Thank you, Liod!" Shuri chirped, her face lighting up with a brilliant smile as he walked away.

Behind the wall, Marin and Chika stood with their mouths hanging open.

"How?" Chika whispered in disbelief. "How did she just do that so easily?"

They pounced on Shuri the moment Liod was out of sight.

"Shuri! You have to tell us everything!" Marin demanded.

"How did you practice that?" Chika added. "Was that a confession?"

Shuri jumped, her eyes wide with shock. "What? No! He's just a friend! I just asked for help with shopping!"

"Shut up," Marin and Chika said in unison.

"We know you love Liod," Marin said, her eyes twinkling. "That was a date request, plain and simple."

Shuri tried to deny it, but under the pressure of her two best friends, she finally nodded, blushing furiously. "Fine. It's a date. But what about you two? Why are you so interested in my life? Wait... do you two also have someone to confess to?"

Marin and Chika froze. "No! Nothing like that!" they shouted in unison.

"Your blushing faces tell me everything," Shuri said, regaining her composure with a smug look. "Let me guess... Luke? And Uno?"

The silence that followed was their confession. Shuri laughed softly. "Well, I won't tell them. But you have to tell me what you know about Liod's favorite things in return."

"Deal," Marin said. "But how did you do it? How did you ask him for the 14th without dying of embarrassment?"

"I didn't confess," Shuri explained, her eyes turning thoughtful. "I just asked to hang out. On Valentine's Day, I'll buy items that indicate what the day is—chocolates, flowers—and try to confess then. If it works, it works. If not... at least we spent the day together."

Marin and Shuri looked at each other, a new fire in their eyes. The "Shuri Strategy" was brilliant. Use a task as a shield to get the time, then strike when the moment was right.

They ran toward there hoke with new spirit of believe.

Shuri seeing Marin behaving like this make her thought. "Valentine's Day is still have one week," Shuri whispered. "Really Love makes you blind, but it also makes you brave."

While the girls in Tokyo were plotting their hearts' desires, Auron was landing on the roof of the American Guild Headquarters. He moved with the speed of a thunderbolt, his silver aura crackling with the residue of his high-speed flight.

He burst into Evelyn's office, his hand already glowing with the green light of purification. "Evelyn! I'm here! Where is the node?"

He stopped.

Evelyn was sitting calmly at her desk, sipping a cup of coffee. Standing near the window was Zoya, her violet aura shimmering softly. On the floor, a high-ranking officer was bound in golden aura-chains, unconscious and purified.

"You're late, Auron," Evelyn said with a faint, amused smile. "It's already over."

Auron lowered his hand, his visor shifting between the two women. "I heard it was a strong one. You handled it without me?"

"I had help," Evelyn said, gesturing toward Zoya.

"Zoya? What are you doing in America?" Auron asked, his confusion deepening.

"I came to talk to Evelyn about some South Asian coordination," Zoya said, her voice as melodious and calm as ever. "I felt something suspicious about this officer. He was listening a bit too closely to our 'women's talk,' so I scanned him. He was a node, but a weak one once the surprise was gone."

"What was the conversation?" Auron asked.

"Nothing that is not a man's business," Zoya replied with a sharp, playful glint in her eyes.

Auron sighed, the adrenaline of the flight beginning to fade. "Well... I'm glad it's controlled. I was worried."

"What are you doing here?" Zoya asked, stepping closer to him that Aurron can only hear. "You said you had an important meeting back home. You left your training early for it."

"I did," Auron said, his voice dropping an octave as he thought of Marin. "But the news of a node... I couldn't ignore it. I thought Evelyn was in danger."

"Well, as you can see, I'm fine," Evelyn said. "Thank you for coming all this way, Auron."

Auron nodded and took flight again, heading back toward Japan. Zoya watched him go, then turned to Evelyn.

"So, it's true?" Evelyn asked. "You asked him for a promise?"

"I did," Zoya said, her gaze fixed on the silver trail in the sky.

"And what are you going to ask for?"

"I'm going to ask him to be my Valentine," Zoya whispered.

Evelyn's eyes widened. "What? Auron? The Silver Legend? Zoya, he's a machine of war. Do you really think he'll agree to something like that?"

"Who knows?" Zoya said, her violet light pulsing with hope. "But a girl has to try, doesn't she?"

Luke flew back across the Pacific, the realization of his wasted trip weighing on him.

"That was a total waste of energy," Auru grumbled in his mind. "If I'd known Zoya was there, I would have told you to stay with Marin. Now you've missed your chance."

"I know," Luke muttered. "I don't know what she was going to say, but she looked so... hurt when I left."

"You should call her," Auru suggested. "Don't wait for tomorrow."

"You're right," Luke said.

He landed in Tokyo, De-Unified, and walked back to his apartment. His heart was pounding harder than it ever did in a dungeon. He picked up his phone, his thumb hovering over Marin's name.

Across town, Marin was pacing her room, her phone sitting on her desk like a live bomb. "Should I call him? No, he's busy. But what if... no, I can't."

Suddenly, the phone lit up. LUKE.

She grabbed it so fast she nearly knocked it off the desk. Her hands were trembling. She took a breath, trying to steady her voice, and pressed 'Accept.'

"Hello?"

"Hey, Marin," Luke's voice came through, sounding tired but sincere. "I'm sorry I left like that. It was an emergency but later in news I got to know Aura Master of Bangladesh was there helped Evelyn . What were you... what were you trying to say at the cafe?"

The nerves returned, but Marin realized that talking through a screen was far easier than looking into his deep, honest eyes.

"Luke," she said, her voice gaining a bit of strength. "I wanted to ask if you were free on February 14th. I want to go somewhere... I want you to be my companion for the day."

Luke paused. He thought of the shield training. He thought of the nodes. But then he thought of Marin's face in the cafe.

"Sure," Luke said. "I'm free. Is it for the guild? Or something else?"

Marin smiled, a single tear of relief escaping. "I'll share the details with you later. But remember the date: February 14th."

"February 14th," Luke repeated. "I've noted it. See you then, Marin."

As they hung up, Marin let out a squeal of pure excitement, jumping onto her bed.

"I did it! I actually did it!"

Her small familiar, Mie, manifested on her pillow, looking proud. "Congratulations, Marin! You've made the first step. But what are you planning for the 14th?"

Marin looked out at the moon, her eyes shining with determination. "Don't worry about that, Mie. You'll get to see exactly what happens when an Leader decides to win a heart."

The week to Valentine's Day began, and for the first time in seven months, the countdown wasn't just about the end of the world—it was about the beginning of something new.
