Chapter 263: Unexpected News from the Hidden Mist Village
"What's going on?" Kenichi stared blankly at the experimental bench.
It was empty.
Just moments ago, he had tried using Yin Release chakra to cast Genetic Programming Ninjutsu. He wanted to see if he could erase the "nose gene" he had just inserted.
Instead, the instant the technique activated, Kenichi felt hollowed out.
It was strange.
Ever since he inherited the First Hokage's sage body, it had been rare for his chakra reserves to make him feel anything close to depletion. In fact, he could barely remember the last time he had felt it at all.
He could create countless Shadow Clones, a technique infamous for devouring chakra. Without a massive reserve, producing that many clones was impossible.
Yet right now, it felt like someone had scooped the inside of him clean.
Kenichi did not understand, so he forced more Yin Release chakra out of himself, pushing harder and harder. Even then, it felt insufficient.
And then, suddenly, it was enough.
Before he could even figure out why his Yin Release chakra had abruptly become "sufficient," another problem slammed into him.
Right in front of his eyes, Hidan's arm had turned into nothing.
There was nothing left. No blood. No scraps. Not even a stain.
Kenichi froze, genuinely bewildered.
He reached out to touch where the arm had been, but his fingers met only air. He activated his Sharingan and scanned the bench, the floor, the surrounding equipment.
Nothing.
No trace. No clue. It was as if the arm had simply vanished from the world.
Something about this was wrong.
Even if you incinerated flesh with extreme heat, ash would remain. To burn something so completely that no physical tissue information could be found would require terrifying conditions, far beyond ordinary Fire Release.
And if a fire technique had caused it, there should have been a visible process: heat, glow, charring, destruction.
What Kenichi saw was different.
It was like Thanos snapping his fingers.
One moment it existed. The next, it was gone, erased without residue.
"I… huh?" A heavy wave of fatigue crashed into him. Kenichi's vision swayed, and he dropped into a nearby chair.
A few breaths later, he realized something even worse.
Without noticing it, he had dispelled all of his Shadow Clones.
Normally, dispelling them would not burden him much, but some of those clones had existed for a long time. They had been running experiments nonstop and tending crops day after day. The accumulated exhaustion hit him all at once, like a mountain falling into his head.
"So the reason I suddenly stopped feeling the chakra shortage… is because all my Shadow Clones were forcibly dispelled?" Kenichi pinched the bridge of his nose.
Then a thought followed immediately, and his scalp went cold.
What were those Shadow Clones doing a moment ago?
Kenichi did not waste another second investigating Hidan's disappearance. He rushed out of the lab, heading straight for the areas where his clones had been working.
One of them had been conducting an experiment on fusing thermobaric explosives with chakra. It was halfway complete, and worst of all, the recall had been too abrupt.
The chakra injection that clone was controlling had clearly gone wrong.
Kenichi had not even reached the door when a violent explosion detonated inside.
The alloy door bulged outward in an instant.
Kenichi's mouth twitched as he rubbed his face, pain blooming across his expression.
This was truly a disaster on every front. The gene erasure failed, and now even his explosion proof lab had been blown up.
All he could do was pray the situation inside was not too severe. Otherwise, he really could not afford the consequences.
Fortunately, the explosion proof lab had been built extremely sturdy, and the amount of explosives involved was not large. The damage was limited.
After handling the aftermath, Kenichi created several new Shadow Clones to take over the previous work.
Only then did he return to his main laboratory.
Now he wanted to understand what he had just done. Why had Hidan's arm vanished? And what was that power, exactly?
"…You made his arm disappear?" When Kenichi went to find his teacher, he found Orochimaru staring at him with a rare look of surprise.
"Yes, Sensei. Hidan's hand is gone," Kenichi sighed.
He had tried to extract biological information from it afterward, but there was nothing to extract.
The arm was simply erased, like deleting code from a computer.
It even made Kenichi suspect he had somehow touched Yin Yang Release. In his memory, only something close to Yin Yang Release should be able to do this.
But when he tested himself, nothing had changed. His Yin Release chakra and Yang Release chakra were still what they had always been.
"Then go get his other hand," Orochimaru said casually, already losing interest. "This time, be careful not to erase it without thinking."
Orochimaru's research on Hidan was nearly complete anyway. What remained was measuring Hidan's mind and brain.
For that, only the brain mattered. Whether the hand existed or not did not really change anything.
Hidan was not going to be using his hands again.
"Sensei, are you going out on a mission?" Kenichi asked, watching Orochimaru prepare.
Orochimaru rarely left. Most of his time was spent in experiments, and lately he had not been going out on organization missions either.
"No." Orochimaru smiled, then licked his lips, eyes shining with excitement. "It seems something interesting has happened in the Hidden Mist Village. I plan to take a look."
Kenichi's curiosity spiked immediately.
The Hidden Mist Village… that was the village whose Mizukage had been controlled by Obito.
To be honest, the Mizukage's situation was miserable. Among all the Kage, being puppeteered and used like a tool was rare to the point of humiliation.
But what exactly did Orochimaru mean by "interesting"?
Could it be… Obito had been hit by the God Slaying Bomb?
The thought alone made Kenichi's heartbeat quicken.
If Obito really had been caught by it, then was he dead?
If he was dead, that would be truly interesting.
