Jayden woke to chains.
Essence-suppressing chains.
The same ones from the photos. The ones they'd used on Lucian.
His blood went cold.
Medical bay. Sterile white. But the chains were black iron, humming with suppression runes.
Theron stood at the foot of the bed.
"For your protection," he said.
Jayden's eye flickered. Barely. The chains dampened everything.
"Protection."
"The faculty agreed. Until we understand your growth rate fully—"
"You're caging me."
"We're being cautious."
The door opened. Professor Kane entered. Vance behind him. Others Jayden didn't recognize.
All wearing Academy combat gear.
Oh.
"This isn't protection," Jayden said quietly. "This is containment."
"Call it what you want." Theron's expression was stone. "You defeated a hundred students. Your speed increased 15% during the fight. You're approaching Master-rank metrics at age fifteen."
"So you're doing exactly what broke Lucian."
"We're preventing another Lucian."
Jayden tested the chains. They bit into his wrists. Essence sealed tight.
But Omni still whispered.
[CHAIN ANALYSIS: Essence suppression. 94% effective. Speed reduced to 4.1 units. Escape probability: 12%]
Too low.
Unless—
His eye pulsed. Hidden. Barely visible.
[OVERCLOCK AVAILABLE: Force essence through suppression. Risk: Severe injury. Success rate: 67%]
Jayden looked at Theron. At the professors. At the chains.
They'd made their choice.
Now he'd make his.
"I trusted you."
"And we're trying to trust you." Theron moved toward the door. "Rest. We'll discuss this more when—"
Jayden's eye exploded crimson.
Power ripped through the suppression.
The chains shattered.
Every professor moved.
Too slow.
Jayden was already gone.
The facility alarm screamed.
Jayden ran. Full speed. No holding back.
His shoulder wound tore open. Blood sprayed. Didn't matter.
Behind him—Theron. Moving like a Sage should. Fast. Too fast.
But Jayden pushed harder.
[OVERCLOCK INITIATED][Speed: 14.7 → 18.3 → 22.6 → 26.4 units]
The world slowed.
He burst through the medical wing. Students scattered. Guards reached for weapons.
Jayden flowed between them. Untouchable.
Lightning crackled from the ceiling. Theron's essence. Space-time manipulation redirecting Jayden's path.
Shit.
The lightning curved. Struck.
Jayden's eye saw it. Body moved before thought.
He dodged lightning.
Twisted mid-air. The bolt scorched the floor where he'd been.
[Speed: 26.4 → 28.9 → 31.2 units]
Theron's eyes widened.
More lightning. Five strikes at once. Each one guided by space-time precision.
Jayden danced between them.
His shadow blade manifested. Pure instinct. He slashed through the fifth bolt—essence meeting essence.
It scattered.
"Impossible," someone breathed.
But Jayden was already moving. Through the main hall. Toward the exit.
Students appeared. Blocking the way.
Not attacking. Just standing. Scared. Confused.
Jayden didn't slow.
He ran through them. Moving so fast they barely registered his passage.
Outside. Finally.
Fresh air. Open ground.
Then Theron appeared in front of him.
Instant teleportation.
"Stop."
Jayden's eye pulsed. Full analysis.
[THERON - SAGE RANK][Speed: 24.8 units. Power: EXTREME][Warning: Cannot win direct confrontation]
Jayden pivoted. Changed direction.
Theron followed.
Space warped. Distance became meaningless.
Every turn Jayden made, Theron was already there.
"You can't escape a Sage," Theron said. Voice calm. Too calm. "I'm faster. Stronger. More experienced."
"Yeah."
Jayden pushed anyway.
[Speed: 31.2 → 33.7 units]
His fastest yet.
For one beautiful second, he matched Theron.
Moved beside him. Not ahead. Not behind. Beside.
Theron's surprise was everything.
Then Jayden juked right. Toward the forest.
Theron lunged.
Too late.
Trees swallowed Jayden whole.
The forest was chaos.
Branches whipped his face. Roots tried to trip him. Blood loss making his vision swim.
Behind him—Theron. And reinforcements. He could hear them crashing through.
His eye flickered. Barely functional now.
[Essence depletion: 91%][Speed maintenance: Failing][Body damage: Critical]
Didn't matter.
Had to find them.
Had to reach Marcus and Cinna before—
There.
His eye caught essence signatures ahead.
Two familiar patterns.
He changed direction. Pushed through the pain.
His speed dropped. 33.7 to 29.4 to 24.1.
Fading.
The signatures got closer.
Trees thinned.
A clearing appeared.
And standing there—
Marcus. Cinna.
Both alive. Both staring at him like he was a ghost.
"Jayden?" Marcus stepped forward. "What the hell—"
"Run." Jayden collapsed against a tree. "They're coming. We need to—"
Footsteps.
Dozens of them.
The forest exploded with movement.
Theron emerged first. Then Vance. Kane. And behind them—
Elena. Zain. The entire advanced class.
One hundred fifty Academy fighters.
All surrounding the clearing.
All staring at Jayden.
His eye flickered once. Twice.
Then died completely.
Normal brown eyes stared back at the army.
[Essence reserves: 4%][Speed: 8.2 units][Status: Unable to fight]
Marcus and Cinna moved beside him. Ready to defend.
Three against one hundred fifty.
Again.
But this time Jayden had nothing left.
Theron stepped forward. "Jayden Cross. Stand down."
"No."
"You're exhausted. Injured. Outnumbered."
"Doesn't change my answer."
"Then you leave me no choice—"
"Wait."
Elena stepped out of the formation. Walked into no-man's-land between the two groups.
"This is wrong."
"Elena," Theron warned.
"He broke free because you chained him. He ran because you treated him like a prisoner." Her voice cut through the tension. "You're creating the monster you claim to prevent."
"He's dangerous—"
"So am I. So is Zain. So is anyone with real power." Elena turned to face Theron. "The difference is trust. You trusted us. But him? You caged him the first chance you got."
Silence.
Then Zain stepped forward too. "She's right."
More students followed. One. Five. Twenty.
The formation broke.
Half the advanced class moved to stand between Jayden and Theron.
"Stand aside," Theron said. Voice harder now.
"No sir." Elena manifested her ice rapier. Not attacking. Just ready. "If you want him, you go through all of us."
Theron looked at his students. At the rebellion forming.
At Jayden, barely standing, protected by the people he'd tried to protect.
The Headmaster's expression shifted.
Calculation. Cost-benefit analysis.
Then he sighed.
"This isn't over."
He turned. Walked away.
The Academy forces followed. Slowly. Reluctantly.
Until only the advanced class remained.
Elena approached Jayden. "You okay?"
"No." He could barely stand. "But thanks."
"Don't. You just made enemies of the entire faculty." She glanced at the departing forces. "We all did."
Marcus caught Jayden as he finally collapsed.
"What now?" Cinna asked.
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
End of Chapter 16
[RESULT: Speed peaked at 33.7 units. Dodged lightning. Matched a Sage. Then crashed completely. Half the advanced class defected. Academy fractured. Theron retreated. War is coming.]
