Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: The Observer

Li Wei didn't sleep again.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Teacher Chen's smile.

Patience. Satisfaction.

The kind of smile that says, I wanted this. I made this happen.

He wanted me to win. To destroy Wang Jie. He recorded it. Why?

The system offered no answer. Just the cold glow of his stats:

[Applause Points: 95/125]

[30 more needed for Timing + Crowd Read]

[Current audience: 50 neutral + multiple active threads]

Threads. Connections. People watching, reacting, waiting.

[Thread: Wang Jie — Status: Broken. Potential: Unknown]

[Thread: Zhao Gang — Status: Interested. Potential: Ally or Threat]

[Thread: Teacher Chen — Status: Active Observer. Potential: Critical]

[Thread: Xiao Ling — Status: Ally. Potential: Essential]

The theater was filling up.

Morning came.

Li Wei walked alone. Xiao Ling texted: Parents watching. Can't meet before school. See you at lunch.

Fine. He needed time to think.

Then someone waited at the corner. Not Xiao Ling. Zhao Gang.

The repeater leaned against the wall, arms crossed. Bored. Observing. When he saw Li Wei, he stepped forward.

"Walk with me."

It wasn't a question.

Li Wei's system flickered.

[Zhao Gang detected — Status: Interested, Threat Level: Low. Recommendation: Engage, gather information.]

Half a block passed in silence. Students gave them space. Finally:

"That thing you said to Wang Jie. About his dad. Was it true?"

"Yes."

"How did you know?"

Lie? Deflect? Perform?

Truth. Partial truth.

"I notice patterns. The way he flinches, how he talks… people give themselves away if you watch."

Zhao Gang considered him. Then spoke.

"You used to be nothing. Quiet. Desperate. Monday changed that. People don't change that fast without help. Got someone teaching you?"

Li Wei thought: the system. The theater. The audience.

"Something like that," he said.

They reached the gates. Zhao Gang stopped.

"I'm not your friend. But not your enemy either. Need info—about Wang Jie, Teacher Chen, anyone—I might trade."

"For what?"

"Later." He walked away.

[Zhao Gang status updated — Alignment: Neutral → Potential Asset]

First period. Math.

Li Wei's usual seat. Nothing usual. Whispers. Glances. Respect where once there was avoidance.

[Passive audience update: +8 converts]

[Total audience: 58]

[Applause Points gained: 5]

[Total AP: 100]

Twenty-five more. Timing. Crowd Read. Both.

Teacher Chen entered. Bell rang. Eyes met. Smiled. Warm. Friendly. Predatory.

A folded note landed on his textbook. He counted thirty. Opened it:

Nice work yesterday. Let's talk after class. —T.C.

Blood ran cold.

[Threat confirmed: Teacher Chen has video. Recommendation: Bring Xiao Ling. Prepare.]

Lunch. Far corner of the courtyard. Xiao Ling. Away from cameras, crowds.

He showed her the note.

"You're not going alone," she said.

"I know."

"We need a plan."

"If we don't go to his office?" Li Wei suggested.

Her eyes widened.

"His note says 'let's talk.' Doesn't say where. If I choose, I control the situation."

"The cafeteria. After lunch rush. Back tables. Quiet enough to talk. Visible enough to anyone watching."

"Exactly. My stage."

[Plan formulated — Location: Cafeteria, 4:15 PM; Audience: 20–30 students; Objective: Control conversation, reveal nothing; Risk: High; Reward: High]

4:10 PM. Li Wei entered. Xiao Ling already at back table. Pretending to study. Watching. Waiting.

4:14. Teacher Chen walked in. Crossed the room with easy confidence. Sat across.

"Thanks for meeting me," he said, phone on the table, screen dark. "Private? This works too."

"What do you want?" Li Wei asked.

"Straight to the point. Good. I've been watching you. Closely."

"I noticed."

"Good. You've changed overnight. Desperate clown → dismantler of Wang Jie. That's not growth. That's… something else."

"I studied. Prepared. I—"

"No." Teacher Chen cut him off. Calm.

Certain. "I've taught twelve years. I know preparation. This is different." He tapped his phone. "Video behind gym. Watched ten times. I see someone who knew exactly what to say. Four enemies… followers? Sympathizers? Effective."

[Teacher Chen status: Analyzing — Trying to understand you, not concluded]

Li Wei chose offense, not defense.

"You're curious. Recognize something, don't you? Seen it before."

Teacher Chen's smile didn't waver. But behind his eyes, something shifted.

"Seen what before?"

"Someone changing overnight. Knowing things they shouldn't. Making people listen." He held Teacher Chen's gaze. "Someone like you."

Silence. Cafeteria sounds receded. Only them.

Teacher Chen's hand curled into a fist.

"Interesting theory. Why do you think I've changed?"

"I didn't say you changed. I said you recognize it."

Long pause. Then he laughed. Warm. Surprised. Almost relieved.

"You're sharper than I thought. Sharper than I was at your age. Been waiting for someone like you. Longer than you know."

No explanations. Only:

"I'm not your enemy. Not yet. That depends on what you do next. The video is safe. Use your gifts wisely. The audience is always watching."

He walked away. Heart pounding. Mind racing.

[Conversation complete — Teacher Chen status: Unknown; He revealed nothing; He is patient, dangerous, familiar]

Xiao Ling appeared. "What happened?"

Li Wei whispered: "He's been waiting. Longer than I know."

Night. Room. System status:

[Applause Points: 100/125]

Twenty-five more. Then everything changes.

Not thinking about AP.

Thinking about Teacher Chen's laugh.

The surprise.

The relief.

Phone buzzed: Unknown number. One line:

Check your school email. —T.C.

Laptop. Message sent ten minutes ago. Attachment: video.

Grainy. Ten years old. Classroom.

Teacher Chen younger.

Student performing. Smiles. Stop. Turns.

Looks at camera. Smiles.

Li Wei froze.

[New objective: Identify boy in video]

[Warning: He looks like you. Performs like you.]

[Question: How many performers came before? Where are they now?]

Hands shaking. AP 100/125.

Am I the first audience? Or just the next act?
