Chapter 135 - Lingering Pain

The Forest Path

The air was cooler now.

Dense trees blocked most of the sunlight, leaving only scattered rays touching the ground.

Each step echoed softly.

Leaves crunching.

Branches shifting.

The group moved in silence.

Not uncomfortable—

Just… quiet.

Hiroto

His breathing wasn't as steady as before.

Subtle.

But there.

A slight delay in each step.

A faint stiffness in his movement.

He hid it well.

But not well enough.

"…You're slowing down."

Hiroto didn't look at her.

"…I'm fine."

A pause.

"…That's not what I asked."

He exhaled lightly.

Still walking.

"…It's nothing."

Akari stopped.

"…Hiroto."

That made him stop too.

He turned slightly.

Their eyes met.

For a moment No one else existed.

"…You don't have to pretend," she said quietly.

His expression didn't change.

But his silence did.

"…If I stop," Hiroto said,

"…I won't move again."

Akari's eyes softened slightly.

"…That's not strength."

A beat.

"…That's fear."

Hiroto looked away.

"…Maybe."

No denial.

No argument.

Just honesty.

From ahead—

Without turning—

"…Both of you."

They looked forward.

"…Keep moving."

Not harsh.

Not gentle.

Just… firm.

"…You can talk while walking."

They walked again.

Closer now.

Not by choice—

But naturally.

Yui (Light Shift)

From behind—

"…You two argue like an old couple."

Akari froze slightly.

"…We're not…"

"…Relax, I'm joking," Yui said with a small smile.

The tension cracked.

Just a little.

"…If that's arguing, you've lived a peaceful life."

He stretched his arms lazily.

"…I've seen worse."

Watcher (Rare Line)

"…Noise attracts attention."

Silence returned instantly.

Everyone understood.

The forest felt different now.

Not dangerous—

But not safe either.

Something unseen.

Something distant.

Watching?

Or maybe just imagination.

A sudden pulse.

Sharp.

Through his side.

He stopped.

Just for a second.

"…Tch."

"…Pain?"

Hiroto didn't answer.

Goro turned slightly.

"…Good."

Hiroto frowned.

"…Good?"

Lesson Begins (Subtle Start)

Goro's eyes were calm.

"…Means your body hasn't given up."

"…Pain reminds you where your limits are."

A step closer.

"…Ignore it completely…"

A pause.

"…and you'll die next time."

No argument this time.

Just… listening.

Akari Glances at Him

Not worried.

Not panicked.

Just aware.

She adjusted her pace slightly—

Matching his.

Without saying anything.

Hiroto noticed.

Didn't say anything either.

But his steps became…

Just a little steadier.

The forest began to open ahead.

A wider path.

More light.

A new direction.

Goro's voice broke the silence one more time:

"…We find a place to rest."

"…Then we start."

Hiroto's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Start what?"

Goro didn't look back.

"…Fixing you."

To be continued…
