Alice's POV
My mother's voice on the phone saying my life was in danger kept replaying in my head for days after that call, but she wouldn't tell me anything more until we met in person. She said she needed to see me face to face to explain everything.
"I don't trust this," Bryan said when I told him I wanted to meet her. "Alice your mother has been dead to you for thirty years and suddenly she's alive and saying you're in danger?"
"I know it sounds suspicious, but Bryan, she's my mother," I argued. "I need to at least hear what she has to say."
We arranged to meet at a hotel in central London and when I walked into the lobby, I saw a woman who looked like an older version of me sitting in a corner booth. When our eyes met, she started crying.
"Alice," she said standing up. "Oh my God, you're so beautiful."
"Don't," I said holding up my hand to stop her from hugging me. "Elizabeth, you don't get to pretend like we have a relationship after abandoning me."
