Alice's POV
I rested my head on his shoulder and tried to believe him. "What do we tell the kids when they start asking questions? Hope already thinks this is a game but Emma is smart. She will figure out something is wrong."
"We tell them the truth in simple terms," Bryan suggested. "Some bad people were bothering us so we needed a break in a quiet place. No details about the crime family or the threats. Just enough to keep them calm and cooperative."
The next morning, I woke up to the sound of birds outside and for a second, I forgot where we were. Then reality hit and I remembered we were hiding in a cabin in the middle of nowhere because a crime family wanted revenge on my dead father through me and my children.
I checked on Grace first and found her awake in the portable crib staring at the ceiling. Her little fists moved in the air and she made soft cooing sounds. I picked her up and held her close because her warmth reminded me why we were doing this.
