Li did not follow them.
When the massive iron doors of the Obsidian Throne Room closed behind the kneeling Abyssal Lords, the Emperor of Light had simply offered them a knowing, dangerous smirk. "I will inspect the perimeter defenses," Li had murmured, his golden eyes flicking to Aldren. "Do try not to bring the fortress down around us, Lord of the Deep. The night is yours."
And then, they were alone.
Aldren didn't speak as he led Elara through the labyrinthine corridors of the Spire. His massive hand remained firmly wrapped around hers, his thumb stroking the back of her knuckles with a rhythmic, almost grounding desperation.
The air grew heavier, sweeter, the scent of rusted iron fading into the intoxicating aroma of crushed black orchids and ozone.
