Chapter 9: The Rules Are Me
"I am your Jōnin instructor, Hatake Kakashi."
Kakashi stood before them with an easy, approachable smile, his visible eye curved into a friendly crescent. He seemed harmless enough—just a lazy, silver-haired man in a flak jacket.
But neither Sakura nor Sasuke was fooled by his carefree demeanor.
He was a Jōnin. One of the elite. Someone like that could never be as simple as he appeared. And as their assigned instructor, he held their futures in his hands. The weight of that realization made them both tense, their eyes sharp as they studied Kakashi's every movement.
The silence stretched as the three genin stared at their new teacher with a mixture of wariness and anticipation. Kakashi scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
"Well," he said, breaking the quiet, "since none of you seem to know me, I'll introduce myself first."
He proceeded to give a brief, somewhat evasive introduction—nothing too personal, just enough to satisfy basic courtesy. Then he turned the question back on them.
"Your turn. Tell me your names, your likes, your dislikes, and your dreams for the future."
Naruto kept his response minimal. He gave his name and little else, offering nothing that might reveal his true thoughts.
Sasuke, however, spoke with fierce intensity. "My name is Uchiha Sasuke. I hate a lot of things, and I don't like much of anything. My dream… is to restore my clan's honor. And to kill a certain man."
Sakura's introduction was that of a typical girl—she mentioned her likes, her dislike of loud things, and her future plans, though she left out one particular ambition that involved a certain dark-haired boy.
Kakashi listened to each of them in turn, nodding thoughtfully. His gaze lingered on Sasuke for a moment, then shifted to Naruto. His visible eye narrowed slightly, unreadable.
Then, he clapped his hands together.
"Alright. Now that introductions are out of the way, let me make one thing clear." His tone turned serious. "None of you are ninjas yet."
"WHAT?!"
Sasuke and Sakura both jolted, their eyes going wide with shock and disbelief. They had passed the graduation exam. They had their forehead protectors. How could they not be ninjas?
Kakashi's expression didn't change. "Before you become genin, you have to pass my survival exercise. If you fail, you go back to the academy. Only those who pass are officially recognized as ninjas."
"But we already passed the graduation exam!" Sakura protested, her voice rising with frustration. "Why do we have to take another test?!"
"Don't ask so many questions." Kakashi's eye crinkled, but there was steel beneath the smile. "Here, I am the rule."
He straightened up. "That's enough talking. You're dismissed until this afternoon. The survival exercise starts at 1:00 PM. Meet at Training Ground Three. And remember… don't eat lunch."
Before anyone could respond, Kakashi vanished in a flicker of movement, leaving the three genin staring at the empty space where he had stood.
Panic flashed across Sakura's face. She turned to Naruto and Sasuke, her voice trembling.
"Naruto, Sasuke, what do we do?! Another exam? I just barely passed the graduation test…"
Her eyes were already growing glassy with anxious tears.
Sasuke's response was cold and immediate. "He said it himself. Here, he is the rule."
Without another word, he stood up and began walking toward the door.
Sakura blinked, startled. "Sasuke, where are you going?"
"To buy ninja tools," Sasuke replied without looking back. "I'm preparing for the afternoon exercise."
Naruto also rose from his seat.
Sakura turned to him, her voice smaller now. "Naruto? What about you?"
Sasuke paused at the door, glancing back. He, too, seemed curious about Naruto's answer.
Feeling their eyes on him, Naruto shrugged and offered a faint, almost lazy smile.
"Going to eat."
Silence.
Sakura's jaw dropped. Sasuke's eye twitched.
"B-but…" Sakura stammered, her brain struggling to process what she had just heard. "Mr. Kakashi said not to eat!"
Naruto gave her a flat, unimpressed look. "He told you not to, so you're just going to obey?"
"But Sasuke said… he said that his words are the rule…"
Naruto nodded as if in agreement. Then, he said something that completely contradicted that agreement.
"Yeah. Sasuke's right. But he's him, and I'm me. And me… I'm pretty good at breaking rules."
Without another word, Naruto turned and walked out the door.
Sakura stared after him, a strange light flickering in her eyes. Sasuke, on the other hand, gritted his teeth, his expression a mix of frustration and reluctant acknowledgment. Then, to Sakura's surprise, he also walked out—following in the direction Naruto had gone.
——
True to his word, Naruto went straight to Ichiraku Ramen. As he sat at the counter and placed his order, he felt a faint prickle at the back of his neck—a pair of eyes watching him from a distance.
Kakashi, Naruto thought, unsurprised. He's observing us already.
But Naruto didn't change his behavior. He ate his ramen with evident enjoyment, ignoring the hidden gaze.
What he didn't expect was that, not long after he sat down, Sasuke and Sakura walked into the ramen shop. They exchanged awkward glances, then quietly ordered the same thing.
It seemed Naruto's words had planted a seed.
——
The afternoon arrived quickly.
Well-fed and surprisingly at ease, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura made their way to Training Ground Three.
The field was wide and open, surrounded by dense forest on three sides. Low clouds of dust drifted across the packed earth. In the center of the field stood a silver-haired man in a green flak jacket.
Kakashi.
And for once—shockingly—he was early.
The man notorious for being late to everything was waiting for them, his posture relaxed, his single visible eye tracking their approach.
The wind stirred, kicking up small spirals of dust and sand. A faint breeze brushed against their skin, carrying with it the scent of leaves and something electric—the unspoken tension of a trial yet to come.
The peaceful training ground felt, somehow, like the calm before a storm.
