Chapter 14 - The Chained Abyss

The moment Azraeth stepped onto Floor 31, the chains began to rattle.

The cavern stretched vast and vertical around him, nothing like the volcanic bridges above — broken suspension bridges swaying over a bottomless, glowing chasm, ruined fortresses clinging to jagged outcrops, shattered stone platforms suspended at impossible angles, and colossal chains looping between them all, vanishing into darkness both above and far below. The oppressive silence here felt different from the forge-heat of the Upper Mantle's upper floors — heavier, older, as though the abyss itself were holding its breath.

Trolls began appearing from every direction at once. Some leapt across the broken bridges, using the swaying spans as launching points. Others clawed their way free of collapsed fortress ruins. More climbed steadily upward from the glowing abyss below, massive hands gripping the ancient chains link by link, patient and relentless.

A troll swinging from a chain overhead released its grip entirely, crashing down toward him in a controlled fall meant to crush.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Booster

Flame roared around his feet and he threw himself sideways off the platform's edge entirely, catching a nearby chain one-handed and using its momentum to swing clear as the troll's impact obliterated the stone he'd just vacated. He rode the chain's arc into a second troll crossing a parallel bridge, driving a burning knee into its chest and using the impact to launch himself onto the next platform before either of them could fall.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Dash

Ember trails carried him across a widening gap as the bridge beneath him sheared away entirely, plunging into the glowing dark below. He landed hard on a fortress ruin already crumbling under the weight of three more trolls converging on it, and rather than retreat, he used their combined mass against them.

Blue Colored Fire — Mud Lava

Molten instability spread beneath their footing, and two lost their balance entirely, tumbling from the ruin into the abyss while Azraeth finished the third with a burning strike to the throat. A chain snapped taut beside him as another troll used it to swing directly at his position; he caught the attack on a raised forearm, Fire Protection absorbing the worst of the impact, and answered by grabbing the same chain to redirect the troll's own momentum straight into a collapsing wall.

The fight became something closer to falling than fighting — platforms giving way beneath every exchange, trolls using the chains as much as their own limbs, the abyss below a constant, hungry presence at the edge of every motion. Azraeth read the rhythm of it the way Vaelric had once taught him to read anything: not the individual attacks, but the shape of the whole. Trolls dropping from above meant openings below. Trolls climbing meant a moment of vulnerability at the chain's edge. He began exploiting both without conscious thought, weaving fire directly into every mid-air exchange.

By the time the last cluster converged on a single collapsing platform, exhaustion had settled deep into every limb, but so had certainty.

Blue Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

A compressed sphere tore through the packed cluster in a single decisive line, and the survivors scattered into the dark rather than face what remained of him, Azraeth finishing the last of them with controlled, economical strikes until the chains finally fell still.

Floor thirty-two's hundred and sixty trolls found Azraeth already mastering the vertical battlefield, swinging between chains with the same fluency he'd once reserved for solid ground, using momentum itself as a weapon rather than merely a means of escape.

Floor thirty-three's hundred and sixty-five saw entire bridge networks collapse beneath the fight's own violence, forcing him to change platforms constantly, never resting on any single stretch of stone long enough for it to become a liability.

Floor thirty-four's hundred and seventy turned collapsed fortresses into the battlefield itself, ruined towers crumbling around him, falling stone and swinging chains and buckling walls all becoming extensions of a fight he no longer needed to think his way through — only feel.

---

Floor thirty-five's chains rattled louder than any before, broken bridges shaking, fortress ruins echoing with the approach of something far more coordinated than anything he'd faced in this cavern yet.

They fought with a ferocity the earlier floors hadn't shown, several trolls deliberately severing chains beneath him mid-fight, others coordinating drops from multiple angles simultaneously. Azraeth drew on every lesson the chained abyss had taught him — Fire Booster carrying him through gaps that shouldn't have existed, Fire Protection absorbing blows that would have ended lesser fights outright, Mud Lava turning solid footing against entire clusters at once. A troll's grip closed around his leg mid-swing, dragging him toward the abyss's edge; he answered with a burning palm directly to its face, breaking free a heartbeat before momentum could carry them both over.

By the fight's final stretch, exhaustion had become something closer to a second skin, every strike costing more than the one before it. He pushed through anyway, driving the last coordinated wall of trolls into a final, decisive collapse, and ended what remained with everything he had left.

Azraeth sank onto a fragment of unbroken stone, exhausted but steady, the chains around him finally silent. He allowed himself a slow breath before speaking.

[SKILLS]

Active Skill: Fire Protection — An invisible shield of fire around the user's body that reduces incoming damage, transferable to allies up to ten times, its condition trackable through Heat Sense.

Active Skill: Lava Heal — Scorching flame that burns away toxins and infection while accelerating the repair of injuries and shattered bone.

Active Skill: Mud Lava — A pool of molten mud beneath an enemy, restricting movement while dealing continuous damage.

Active Skill: Fire Booster — Concentrated flame around the feet, sharply increasing speed and agility.

Ultimate Skill: Stellar Pull: The user conjures a blue gas giant star and freely controls its size.

Large Form: Expands into a colossal blue star that generates an overwhelming gravitational field, pulling nearby enemies into its stellar vortex. Those caught within are immobilized by the crushing gravity while being continuously scorched by the star's immense heat.

Compressed Form: Condenses the star into a tiny sphere of compressed stellar energy. The user hurls it at a velocity approaching the speed of light, allowing it to pierce through nearly any obstacle or target before they can react, making it virtually impossible to dodge.

Ultimate Skill: Supernova — Compresses an immense amount of stellar energy into a concentrated core before triggering a controlled supernova explosion, releasing a catastrophic burst of heat and energy after a brief charge.

Passive: Unknown — Conceals the user's true information from those with significantly lower levels, preventing them from reading the user's level, abilities, and true strength.

Passive: Teleport — Instant transfer through space, usable for dodging, repositioning, or rapid travel bypassing distance and obstacles.

Passive: Foresight — Perceives and predicts an opponent's movements moments before they occur.

Passive: Heat Thickness — A compressed layer of heat energy that weakens incoming attacks before they land.

Passive: Heat Sense — Detects the heat and presence of all beings and hostile intent regardless of obstacles or concealment.

(Confiscated) Passive: Inferno Gathering — Converts a defeated enemy's remaining essence into 10,000,000 additional EXP per kill.

Passive: Indigo Fire — An innate celestial flame woven into every ability, hot enough not merely to burn but to erase — mana, matter, and existence itself reduced to nothing in a silent flash. Known as Godfire.

Azraeth read the entry near the bottom of the skill list twice before understanding settled in.

Unknown. At first he'd assumed it was simply the system's placeholder — a skill not yet identified, waiting on some later explanation. But the description beneath it left no room for that reading. It wasn't unidentified. It was named exactly that, deliberately, by whatever had built the system that governed him.

He allowed himself the faintest, tired huff of amusement. A skill that hides who I am, named so no one can even ask. Fitting, in its own quiet way.

He rose, steady despite the exhaustion still settled deep in his limbs, and descended toward whatever waited next.

---

The chained cavern gave way to something entirely different — an abandoned volcanic city, ancient streets cracked and empty, collapsed towers leaning against a smoke-dark sky, shattered temples standing silent beside gigantic, rusted stone gates. For a long moment, nothing moved at all.

Then the city came alive.

The great gates burst open with a groan of ancient stone. Buildings collapsed from within as something forced its way free of the ruins beneath them. Patrols emerged from the streets themselves, others descending from the leaning towers, more crawling out from the wreckage of shattered temples — all of them converging on Azraeth's position from every direction at once.

He turned slowly, Heat Sense sweeping the ruined city, and understood immediately that whatever the chained abyss had prepared him for, this was something else entirely.
