Chapter 15 - The Waking City

The instant Azraeth's foot touched the cracked street, the abandoned volcanic city came alive around him.

Massive stone gates burst open at the city's edge, ancient hinges shrieking under weight that hadn't moved in centuries. Ruined buildings collapsed inward as trolls forced their way free of the rubble beneath them, and more emerged from every direction the ruins offered — cracked streets, leaning towers, shattered temples, collapsed houses, broken plazas, ancient fortress walls — converging on his position until the entire dead city felt, for the first time in longer than anyone could measure, awake. Ash drifted from crumbling rooftops, and somewhere beneath the ruined streets, the deep groan of settling stone answered every footstep of the approaching horde.

A troll barreled through a collapsing wall directly at him, and Azraeth met it without retreating.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Booster

Flame roared around his feet — colder and deeper now, a violet-blue so intense it seemed to swallow the light around it rather than cast any of its own — and he closed the gap before the creature could fully brace, driving a burning fist through its guard hard enough to end it in a single strike, the Godfire's touch leaving nothing behind but drifting ash where flesh had stood a heartbeat earlier. A second troll lunged from the settling dust before he'd fully registered the first was gone; he pivoted into it rather than away, catching its overextended arm and using its own momentum to throw it through a crumbling storefront.

He fought through the collapsing street that followed, rubble becoming both obstacle and weapon as buildings gave way around him.

Teleport carried him clear of it entirely, vanishing from the collapsing street and reappearing atop a crumbling rooftop as three trolls converged on the ground below. He used the height itself, dropping a burning knee onto the nearest one's skull before it could look up. Another troll hurled a chunk of shattered temple wall at him from an alley below; he twisted around it mid-air and answered with a flame-wreathed kick that sent the debris hurtling back into the thrower instead.

Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Protection

The shield absorbed a devastating overhead slam that would have caved in his ribs, buying him the half-second needed to counter with a burning elbow that staggered his attacker into a narrow alley entrance, where two more waited to ambush him. He read the trap before it closed, pivoting through the gap rather than into it, driving flame into both flanking trolls before either could commit fully.

Deeper into the ruins, a gatehouse exploded outward as a dozen trolls forced their way through simultaneously, and Azraeth dropped low.

Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava

Ground turned violently unstable beneath the entire cluster, and half of them lost their footing at once, buying him precious seconds against a battlefield that refused to stop growing. He used them to reposition rather than press an advantage he didn't yet have, retreating toward the collapsing gatehouse itself as more trolls poured through the ruined streets around him.

This many, he thought, chest heaving, close-range alone won't end it fast enough.

He drove the encroaching mass toward the gatehouse's remaining archway, using Mud Lava a second time to trap a full third of the horde in ground that refused to hold them, and retreated three full strides to buy himself the one thing he needed most.

Indigo Colored Fire — Supernova

Violet-blue light gathered between his palms, compressing tighter and denser with every passing heartbeat, and the trapped trolls surged against their own failing footing in desperation, sensing exactly what was building even if they couldn't name it. Two broke free and charged directly at him; Fire Protection held through both strikes as the light continued compressing, refusing to be rushed. A third leapt from a collapsing rooftop aimed squarely at his position, and he stepped aside at the final instant without breaking the gathering energy at all. A fourth, larger than the rest, tore free of the mud entirely and closed the last few strides between them, fist already descending — and Azraeth caught the blow bare-handed, Heat Thickness screaming against the impact, refusing to let even that much force disturb the compressing core between his palms. The remaining trolls threw everything they had at him in the final seconds, rubble and fists and desperate, uncoordinated fury, and none of it arrived in time.

The charge completed.

Light tore outward in a single, catastrophic burst, heat and pressure rolling through the ruined district and reducing everything caught within it — stone, rubble, troll alike — to molten devastation in an instant. When the light faded, nothing remained standing where the horde had been.

Floor thirty-seven's hundred and eighty-five trolls found an entire district collapsing around the fight from its very first exchange, temple roofs caving inward as Azraeth wove between falling debris that had become as much a hazard to the trolls as to himself. He used it deliberately now, herding attackers beneath weakened archways moments before they gave way entirely, letting the dying city do half his work while he handled the rest with clean, economical strikes. A troll cornered him against a leaning tower wall, certain it had trapped him at last; Azraeth simply let the wall finish collapsing on its own, stepping through the resulting gap while his attacker remained buried beneath the rubble.

Floor thirty-eight's hundred and ninety trolls fought amid exploding gatehouses and collapsing towers, streets cracking open beneath the battle's own violence to reveal veins of lava bleeding up from somewhere far below. Azraeth used the new hazard as readily as the old rubble, driving trolls toward cracking streets rather than away from them, letting the city's own volcanic bones finish fights his fists had already started. A pair attempted to flank him through a shattered temple's collapsed roof; he met them mid-fall, driving both down into the very lava vein they'd hoped to use against him instead. By the floor's end, he moved through the ruins less like an intruder and more like something the dead city itself had learned to answer to.

Floor thirty-nine's city awoke exactly as violently as the first had.

These trolls coordinated with a precision the earlier waves hadn't shown, several deliberately collapsing structures to funnel him into killing zones rather than simply overwhelming him with numbers.

Foresight caught the pattern before it fully closed, warning him a half-second before three separate ambushes converged on a single street.

Teleport carried him clear of the trap entirely, reappearing behind the coordinating cluster before they'd registered his absence, and he ended four of them before the rest could turn. The city continued dying around the fight — entire blocks crumbling, ancient plazas splitting open, ash and heat thick enough to blur every exchange into something closer to a storm than a battle. A troll swinging a torn gate-beam like a club forced him to weave through three consecutive strikes before he found the opening to end it; another pair tried to bury him beneath a collapsing archway, and he simply teleported clear a half-second before the stone finished falling, reappearing already mid-strike against the pair who'd triggered the collapse.

Azraeth combined everything the chained abyss and the waking city had taught him, weaving Fire Booster into Teleport into burning strikes that never gave the horde room to reform, Mud Lava trapping clusters faster than they could adapt to losing one. A final wall of trolls formed near the shattered central plaza, dozens strong, refusing to break even as their numbers thinned around them.

Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

A compressed sphere tore through the battlefield's densest concentration in a single unbroken line, and Azraeth finished what remained through sheer relentless momentum, exhaustion burning through every limb by the time the last troll finally fell.

Azraeth allowed himself a brief, steady rest amid the city's ruin before descending once more, checking his own condition with the same quiet discipline Vaelric had drilled into him back in Shadowfen's fog, a shallow gash sealed beneath one last press of Godfire, his breathing settled long before exhaustion could root any deeper.

The next floor greeted him with total silence.

A colossal ancient arena stretched around him, worn stone underfoot and towering obsidian walls rising on every side, utterly empty — no trolls, no movement, no sound at all beyond his own footsteps echoing off walls that seemed to swallow even that much noise. He crossed the arena floor slowly, Heat Sense finding nothing until he reached its exact center, the silence pressing down with a weight that felt deliberate rather than merely empty.

Only then did the enormous obsidian gate opposite him begin to rise.

The sound was slow, heavy, and deliberate — stone grinding against stone in a rhythm that felt less like a door opening and more like something ancient stirring awake after a very long rest. Massive footsteps followed, echoing through the empty arena, each one landing heavier than the last, closer with every passing second, patient in a way that made the silence before it feel almost merciful by comparison.

Something enormous walked calmly out of the darkness beyond the gate, and Azraeth stood alone at the center of the arena, watching it come.
