"Auntie, have Vivian and her boyfriend broken up?" Cecilia Adler asked, a pointed jab at her for meddling.
"You—you—you! You can serve your own man yourself!" May Sutton, her weak spot jabbed, threw her hands in the air and quit.
But, not wanting to be accused of mistreating Cecilia Adler, she lingered in the kitchen to keep an eye on things, making sure Cecilia didn't use up all the good ingredients on Ian Quincy. 'He's just another ungrateful wretch,' she thought. 'A total waste of the extra beef I sliced for him the first time he came over.'

Cecilia Adler said calmly, "I wasn't counting on you anyway."
May Sutton snorted. "I hope you can keep that confidence when you marry into his family. You'll find out soon enough how miserable and careful you have to be in a marriage without your own family to back you up."
