Charlotte Dalton felt her face flush with embarrassment. She had accepted the red envelope right in front of Cecilia's partner. 'Once they leave, won't they think we're greedy?'
Since guests were present, she couldn't scold Walter Warren.
So she could only reply, "Alright, why don't you go buy two pounds of pork then."
"Buy pork? We don't have any meat ration tickets. We'd have to buy it at a premium. Where would we get that kind of money?" Charlotte Dalton's mother-in-law said as she walked out, combing her hair. She had a mouth full of yellow teeth, and her bad breath carried from yards away.
She then exclaimed excitedly, "Oh! Cecilia, you brought so many things! What's this?"
Cecilia Adler discreetly covered her nose. "Pastries."
Disgusted, Ian Quincy stood up and walked straight outside.
"Ian, where are you going?" Cecilia Adler asked, about to follow him.
"Just getting some air by the door."
