"Come back from living the good life in the city, have we? All dressed up so fancy, I almost didn't recognize you. Are you back to take your uncle's family to the city for the good life?" Mrs. Dalton shouted boisterously, her head held high. "Look who's back in our village!"
In the mountains, neighbors lived far apart.
Mrs. Dalton's shout didn't summon anyone.
She let out a dry laugh. Her gaze shifted, and her eyes lit up. "Ooh! This young man is quite a looker—more handsome than the men in the movies. Look at that height, that build! Is he your partner? Why don't you introduce us?"
"He's my partner, and he can't understand you," Cecilia Adler said, not intending to chat much with Mrs. Dalton.
Mrs. Dalton clucked her tongue in admiration. "Your mother sure had foresight, finding a man from the city so her daughter could become a city-dweller too. Marrying into a city family... you're set for a lifetime of ease."
