Joanna Jacobs was much quieter today. She hardly said a word unless Yvonne Vaughn or the aunt addressed her first.
Sean Carter, who was sitting near the door, watched the sullen-looking Joanna Jacobs and raised his glass. "Miss Jacobs, let's have a drink."
Joanna Jacobs, who had been staring downward, lost in thought, looked up with a start when she heard Sean Carter's voice. "What?" Only after seeing the glass in his hand did she belatedly pick up her own and give his a token tap.
"I never would have thought Sylvia would suddenly get so close with Miss Sterling. I wonder what happened." Joanna Jacobs took a sip of her wine, then smiled at Sean Carter.
Sean Carter maintained a faint smile. "Yes, I'm curious too."
In truth, Sean Carter knew perfectly well why Sylvia Vaughn had grown closer to Aurora Sterling. It just wasn't something he was at liberty to disclose.
Joanna Jacobs raised an eyebrow. "You don't know either?"
