Gu'er ran behind a box in the corner to find the machete.
And find it she did.
Gu'er was acting on pure instinct. Having lived in this house in her past life, she knew exactly where everything was kept.
The machete had always been kept behind the box in the corner. When Gu'er first moved in, she'd been startled to see it and had asked Zhang Da about it, for which he had beaten her. Only later did she learn the reason: Zhang Da had offended someone, a local ruffian who had threatened to "take care" of him. Terrified, Zhang Da had procured a machete and hidden it in the house.
But the machete was never used. Gu'er remembered that in the second month of her marriage to Zhang Da, the ruffian had shown up with a group of men and beaten Zhang Da to a pulp. Zhang Da hadn't even fought back. The machete had remained untouched, and even when they later moved to the city, Zhang Da had muttered a few angry curses about it.
