"It's for birth control." Joan Shaw's face instantly fell. "I know you don't want children."
The hand Miles Xavier had on her back felt suddenly awkward. He wanted to explain, but she cut him off. "I'm going back to sleep for a bit. I'm so tired. You really wore me out last night."
"If anything, you're the one who wore *me* out," Miles Xavier said with a chuckle. Seeing Joan lie back down, he felt thirsty and walked over to the water cooler.
As he passed the desk, he saw it, just as he'd expected: the box of pills and the foil from a pushed-out tablet.
He felt a sense of relief, but at the same time, he couldn't help but glance at her from the corner of his eye. 'Giving her the pleasure of being a woman but stripping her of the right to be a mother... it's cruel.' But right now, he truly wasn't ready for another child.
'But there's still plenty of time,' he told himself. 'We'll have another child someday.'
