Howard stopped in front of Nate Jennings's office door and peered inside through the half-closed blinds.
She wasn't the least bit careless when she worked; in fact, she was completely focused. He'd never seen this side of her before.
He decided not to disturb her. He'd just stand outside for a moment, then leave.
But as if fate were playing a joke, the woman who had been looking down at her documents suddenly lifted her head and spotted him.
They stared at each other for a few seconds, both of them a little stunned.
Nate Jennings was a beat slow to react. Finally, she stood up, walked to the door, and pulled it open. "What are you doing here?" Her tone was biting.
After all, she'd taken every last one of his nasty words in Gallia to heart.
"I was just passing by and heard you worked here, so I thought I'd come take a look." Howard sounded a little awkward. He didn't even know what had possessed him to show up.
Nate Jennings blinked, her mind racing.
